Shimming was one of the first ways I learned after Picking Locks. I STILL use it OFTEN because many people have locks that they don't have keys to. It is a great #Lockboss Skill to incorporate in the proper circumstances.
I use shimming when a key is no longer available and the lock set is in good condition and doesnt need replacement. A great and fundamental skill needed by all locksmiths and trainees. #Lockboss your way to the top, CLKSupplies is there to help. 👍
Shimming was pretty handy for me when I started learning, since I was getting lots of old locks without keys. Definitely a #lockboss move to know! Sometimes shimming and picking can be a good combo-I've often shimmed all but the front pin or two and pick them to finish taking it apart.
shimming a lock is fairly easy after you have the shim stock and get the hang of it. yet it was not until another locksmith friend was showing me about the lock shimming that I even knew anything about this helpful technique. # LOCKBOSS
There’s standard shims and then extra thin shims. It’s helpful to mark them with a sharpie so you don’t get them mixed up. The really thins ones come in handy on tighter tolerance locks. Thanks for sharing! #lockboss
Shimming was one of my first rekey training beside of lock picking pin by pin. Was fun learning how to use it and also learned to make one out of soda can as well to make the padlock shimming. I still use it sometimes to rekey a lot with no key. #lockboss
As usual another great video ... I prefer to shim a lock when ever I am rekeying it or decoding it ... Even if I use a Lishi tool to gain access I will still shim the lock (because I've already turned the lock back to the set position .. I know , I know) ... It's a good skill to know and use .... #LOCKBOSS
Awesome video PJ! My last call would have been one to use shimming for rekeying. Being that I did not have any shims, I just elected to pop the cap and dump the pins. This was a kwikset lock in door knob. Good thing I went this route as we found that it had been master keyed and the owner was unaware. Got it rekeyed and he was happy to not have to worry about a mystery key floating around. Finished keying up the rest of his business and set him up with some nice, large bow DND keys. #Lockboss
Shimming is an essential #lockboss skill which is more difficult with spool driver (top) pins and even harder with serrated and/or T pins. I highly recommend practicing shimming with spool pins so you can know if, (or not) you are hung up on a spool pin.
#Lockboss. I have used shimming, picking and take the cap off. If I can’t pick it I can shim it. We get a lot of customers that want there locks rekeyed, a forget to bring the key. Sometimes if we can’t pick it we get out the shims. About a month ago I purchased the shim holder from CLK, haven’t used it yet. So in a nutshell I always have picks and shims handy.
I would definitely rather shim the lock than take off the top cylinder cover. It's so much faster! BTW, I love your informative videos! They are a great help! #Lockboss
This is one of the most basic, important and principal tasks that we show and encourage the new staff. It is a must know! We use it on daily basis even now the we have lishis available. Great video pj #Lockboss
If I can't pick it open in five minutes, I typically shim. Some locksmiths I know charge an extra fee for picking the lock - I don't, I just like to keep my skills sharp - but if it's taking more than a few minutes, I'll shim. Time is money, right? And customers usually want the job done as quickly as possible so they can go about their routine. Little shimming tip for beginners... If you have trouble lining the shim up, or keeping it in line with the pin stack, trim off the tip of the shim into a V notch or even a concave half moon shape. It helps. A paper hole punch can be of service here. Also, trim your shims when they get raggedy, and keep doing that until they're too short to function. They're not expensive, but why not make them last? And don't forget, once you've shimmed two pins in the back, it's now effectively a 3 pin lock (or 4, depending)... You might be able to finish it off with a pick faster than shimming the remaining pins. #Lockboss
Another locksmith told me I can get some Shims from the security tags they put on items in stores. They are thinner than standard shims but still work most of the time. #lockboss
Can't remember where I learned it from but before I ordered good quality shims I used the really thin metal ribbons that are in the security tags on DVD cases. You definitely have to be alot more delicate with those. #lockboss
I get a lot of locks from the reclaim store brought in with no keys. If I can't rake it quickly or shims are closer to my, shim, repin, rinse, and repeat.
I like to also use shims as insurance for following some plugs out. Specifically on Schlage F-Series plugs. Using a shim plus the f-series follower never fails for this #Lockboss .
Shimming is a fast and easy way to rekey a lock especially a high security one that’s gonna take a long time to pick. Time is money. That being said if I’m doing an opening and just making a key that works in the lock sometimes a lishi is the way to go. I have some great shim holding tools too but usually just end up with the lock core and blank in one hand and shim in the other. #LockBoss
I could probably shim a lock easier than picking it. I can pick, but im still slow at it and sometimes its a 50/50 if ill even get it. It's sometimes frustrating for me, but I still practice anytime there is downtime at my main job or at home. I carrry around a lot of different locks to practice on 😂 #Lockboss
Here is a tip regarding shimming. If you are using a shim that has been previously used several times and you are experiencing difficulty while trying to shim, get a pair of scissors and cut off approximately 1/8" of the shim to give it a "new edge". Your shimming process will go much easier. This has worked for me countless times over my 35 year career as a locksmith. #Lockboss
Use shimming on locks with lost keys almost every day. Also find it easier to get dirty locks, and locks with wore out springs. Apart alot easier than picking. #lockboss
shimming is easy and a quick way to turn the core for disassembly. #LOCKBOSS i re key the locks that come in my local Habitat for Humanities. locks that are donated to them are puzzles at times, and no keys often. i am always looking for old keys to save me from cutting a new key
Shimming locks is a skill I use daily. Some locks are just awful to pick for whatever reason. Even with a lishi. Keep some shims and a ring of shim keys with every pinning station. #lockboss
When you have screwed up royally while repining. Like inserting the plug backwards and dropping the #1 driver and spring into the empty # 6 hole. A pick and a shim can get it unbricked.
I shim locks when the owner doesn't have keys. This happens often with new homeowners when they've been given only one key that operates one lock and not the others, or they are not given any keys. #Lockboss
I usually shim if a key is not present. I ran into a house that the new buyer got keys but not a garage to house handle so opened it and took apart. Shimmed and rekeyed. Owner thought i was a magician. #lockboss
Shimming is a must have skill for any locksmith

Always a great #lockboss skill to have!
I'd give raking a try before shimming. When raking works it usually works fast.

Shimming is a skill every #lockboss should learn!
Shimming has let me take apart locks that would take me a decade to pick regular like. #lockboss
Looks like I need to buy more shims.
#lockboss
Using shims is something I do on a regular basis since customers usually don't have keys during a rekey. #lockboss
#Lockboss decision making for time efficiency
I have shimmed a few locks sometimes I just pick them #Lockboss

Amen, I also like to slightly crease my shim long ways for a little added stiffness
#lockboss. You can always shim without a bunch of expensive tools. It’s easy once you get the hang of it. I always shim when I don’t have a key.
Use shimming on locks with lost keys almost every day. Also find it easier to get dirty locks, and locks with wore out springs. Apart alot easier than picking. #lockboss

Great information and explanation. Shim cheaper locks. They may be skeletonized. #lockboss

Just came from a rekey job that required lots of shimming. #Lockboss

I shim locks maybe 2 or 3 times a week. #Lockboss
Shimming is not something that happens here, but I can see a use for it. #Lockboss
I just used this the other day. Don't be hamfisted, use some finese. #Lockboss
Shimming is the easiest for me if I don't have a working key when rekeying.
I have to use shimming a lot day to day, but the arthritis in my hands makes it hurt when I’m having to do it to an entire house. #lockboss
I usually shim if a key is not present. I ran into a house that the new buyer got keys but not a garage to house handle so opened it and took apart. Shimmed and rekeyed. Owner thought i was a magician. #lockboss
My guess is you are!!! -PJ
Got shims? #lockboss
Only problem is spool pins
Shiming is a technique like any other too much pressure..too little pressure...ahh just right #LockBoss
When you deal with higher security locks, picking a lock open to rekey, is not an option
