  • Hello gardeners! In this video we are talking about wasps. In our east coast zone 7b/8a garden the arrival of early fall is marked by emergence of hundreds of blue winged scoliid wasps that quickly get busy pollinating our sedums, tree verbenas, asters, etc. These common predatory solitary wasps play an important role in controlling the population of June beetles. Those clay tubes you may find under the awning are made by Mud daubers, a type of wasp that preys on Black widow spiders. Some wasp species are even used commercially for natural pest control of aphids. And most wasps are not aggressive - watch Bill catch the Scolia dubia with his bare hands to prove their docile nature!
Plant Delights Nursery is an award-winning nursery in Raleigh, NC near Garner. We specialize in rare, and unusual perennials and we strive to carry a wide selection of exotic plants, cold hardy tropical plants, and native plants. Many of our best perennials are available nowhere else in the US as they represent rare plants collected by Plant Delights founder Tony Avent during his more than 60 plant hunting expeditions to places like China, Crete, Taiwan, South Africa and Argentina or distributed by some of the many specialty plant organizations of which Plant Delights is a member.
