      As a retirement country? Hmm, to be honest I don't think that is really in my arena, I prefer to make videos about markets and street food and, well I have a lot of ideas. But retirement is a long way for me so I don't think I'm the best candidate to make that video, and I am very busy with a lot of other videos I want to make. But there are many other foreigners living in Egypt that make videos that would fit their channel more, maybe one of them would be willing to do that.

    Hi Giselle
    I’m still doing a lot of research regarding Egypt for September and you have been so much help which is muchly appreciated my question is this time (i’m being a pain in the butt with all my questions ) The hostels that you recommended i’ve seen the your video at the hostel you were staying in is there any laundry service or laundry machine?

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад

      No worries, ask away. There is laundry service, they wash it for you and then let it air dry so make sure to have a day for that to be done. I can't remember the cost for laundry service, but it isn't outrageous. Almost all hostels offer this service, I think.

    Watching this gave me an idea for a video for you... How easy/difficult would it be for a vegetarian in Egypt?

    • @Totallyrandomthatsme
      @Totallyrandomthatsme Год назад +6

      Very easy, I’m vegan and lived in Egypt for 10 months. If you rely on beyond meat and stuff then of course it’s harder and more expensive because most of that stuff is imported, but actually so much of Egyptian cuisine is naturally plant-based due to the Nile and most Egyptians can’t afford to eat all that much meat
      Koshary is their National dish and it’s totally vegan - rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, fried onions and a tomato sauce
      Then there’s bamya (okra stew), lentil soup, ta3meya (Egyptian falafel), foul (mashed fava beans), moussaka (like an aubergine tomato type dish), and of course you can have bread with tahini, hummus and baba ghanoug and so on too. Then there is ware2 3nab (vine leaves stuffed with rice) and ma7shi (vegetables such as cabbage leaves, peppers, aubergines and courgettes stuffed with rice and herbs) and finally molokhia which is a dish that hails back to the ancient Egyptians - it’s a green, slimy soup made with a plant called I think jute leaf or jute marrow or something in English and it’s flavoured with garlic and dried coriander and stuff-just make sure to request it with veggie broth not chicken broth
      Furthermore the Coptic Christians are orthodox and for 40 days before Christmas and 40 days before Easter and a few other days throughout the year they fast as well so they abstain from meat, chicken, fish, eggs and dairy so it’s basically a vegan diet except for honey. So during these fasting periods, called ‘the seyam’, there is loads of vegan food around - many restaurants will have a separate fasting (‘seyami’) menu
      If you’re vegetarian and therefore can also have eggs and dairy then there’s even more stuff you can eat!

    • @KOTDM1988
      @KOTDM1988 Год назад +3

      @@Totallyrandomthatsme thank you for your answer... Alot of the food sounds quite similar to dishes I eat from a local Lebanese restaurant here in England, and I absolutely love most of it. Sounds like I'd get on just fine in Egypt!

    • @Totallyrandomthatsme
      @Totallyrandomthatsme Год назад +3

      And to add, Egyptians are very hospitable so even if they themselves may not personally understand why anyone would be vegan/veggie, they will nonetheless go above and beyond to make something you can eat and to make you happy ❤️

      I love that idea, and yes as Bethany mentioned below, there are tons of vegetarian options for meals here. I have made quite a few videos about some of those vegetarian dishes but in separate videos. I am definitely going to have to make a video about that mentioning all of them in the same one. I have a few vegetarian friends and my sister is vegan, so it would be great information for anyone planning a trip to Egypt to have access to. Thanks for the suggestion BW! Hi
    I am from Canada planning a trip to Egypt I have a couple of questions for you number one can I use my Internet card Canadian bank card there and what about Visa and MasterCard? Or should I just bring cash
    How long ago were you in Egypt last?
    Are the hostels pretty safe and secure regarding the items that you leave behind ?

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад

      Helllloooooo, thanks for watching!
      Uh, what do you mean internet card and Canadian bank card? Are those two separate things? I don't know what you mean by internet card. Yeah you can use a bank card (debit or credit, I think both Visa and Mastercard work) but honestly, I only have visa so that is what I have used. But most places don't accept card so it's better to either pull out money from an ATM as you need it, or just bring a bunch of cash and exchange it at an office as you need it. Personally? I just use an ATM. But I guess it depends on how much your bank charges you, most banks will charge at least $5 USD for a foreign transaction fee and then there can be additional fees on top of that like 2.5% of the total charge any time you swipe your card, so be aware of what your bank charges for all that jazz. Anyways it is better to have cash because that is what most people use here.
      I am still in Egypt, I am living here now 😅😆
      Yeah hostels are pretty safe, but I mean I wouldn't leave your valuables laying around in any hostel no matter where you are in the world. Usually hostels have lockers though so I put my most valuable possessions in there (like laptop, camera, whatever) when I go out. I also usually have a travel lock on the zippers of my main pack. More for just deterring a thief than any actual prevention, because those little travel locks are usually cut fairly easily if anyone ACTUALLY wanted to break into your stuff. But I wouldn't worry about it too much....I stayed in a hostel for over 2 months in Cairo and never had an issue.

      @seankhajador8874 Год назад

      Hey thank you so much for the quick reply I appreciate it.
      Sorry what we call interact card it is just a bank card that you use at the ATM.
      I was thinking more like mid September for the trip what do you think the weather will be like by then?
      Roughly about 15 days, now that I know you’re still there and live there what do you think a Regular hotel room will cost per day ? USD price.
      Nothing fancy just something better than a hostel in downtown Cairo the crowded places.
      Any hotel you recommend ?
      Thank you so much for the help

      @seankhajador8874 Год назад

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад

      @@seankhajador8874 Ah okay, I was not familiar with this interact card. I think it should work...? But I have never used just an ATM card, so maybe bring some other bank cards just in case! 😅 And it can't hurt to bring some dollars that you can exchange, just in case. But I suppose that will be up to you. I really do just use my debit card at ATMs. At least maybe bring a little cash and you can exchange it in the airport so you can pay for transportation. Are you thinking about getting a SIM card for while you are here?
      September will be nice, pretty hot still, especially as you will be coming for a (likely) cooler climate.
      About the hotels, I actually can't recommend any as I never stay in hotels, I have only ever stayed in hostels (until I got my apartment). However, they do have private rooms in hostels as well. I will recommend you some hostels and you can look them up if you decide it's okay for you to stay in. I would honestly recommend you stay in downtown Cairo, as it is the best location to stay in (the easiest location to access most of the sites, it is a good starting point). BTW, no matter where you stay in Cairo it is going to be pretty hectic, I think downtown Cairo is one of the less crazy places because there are more traffic lights and such, whereas many other areas do not have them. Some people stay near the pyramids and there are hotels there you can get for around $25-$30 USD night, but the only thing to do there is see the pyramids. After that, you will be paying for Ubers or whatever to get to downtown Cairo area, because downtown is closer to most of everything you would want to see in Cairo (such as Khan el-Khalili market, Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, the museums, Cairo citadel, etc.) There are also many more options for food and things to do in downtown Cairo, vs. near the pyramids where it is just a bunch of crappy restaurants and people trying to sell you stuff/kids asking for money on the street. But that is just my suggestion. I have heard Cleopatra Hotel in downtown is nice, but I don't know the prices as I have never stayed there. The hostels I would recommend are:
      Madina Hostel (all private rooms except for one dorm room)
      Heritage Hostel (pretty sure they have private rooms)
      Holy Sheet Hostel (they have private rooms)
      Tahrir Square Hostel (never stayed here, but I hear it is nice)
      All of those hostels are in downtown Cairo and within walking distance of the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square.
      Let me know if you have any other questions, and I hope this helps!

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад +2

      Hey there! 😉 Yes I have been here for 15 months now. I would say it is cheap, but it depends on what country and currency you are used to, I suppose. It also depends on what kind of lifestyle you like to lead. If you like to travel or live in luxury, that will still be expensive here. I made a video about some prices in Egypt, so check that out for a better idea on some stuff: ruclips.net/video/wvZin1UXkSs/видео.html
      Rent is a tough one to answer. It is not as cheap as one would imagine, and renting airbnb's are overpriced for the quality in most cases, in my opinion. But it all depends on what neighborhood, do you have roommates, there are so many variables.
