  • I started this fishing trip with a bucktail and it caught just about every possible species I could hope to catch on these waters without using any natural bait. The key to catching these fish was to swim lightweight bucktails over whatever structure the fish were on. I've recently released a new online Bucktailing and Blackfish Jigging course and you can learn more and get discounts at saltstrong.com/....

    You'd be better off with a lure you can skip way up under the mangroves if you want to catch snook. They like it way back in there. Some are around the edge where a bucktail will work but you probably can't skip it under the branches. Trout will hang out up in there too. Jerk shad or shrimp copies with weedless hooks do pretty good for skipping and they don't snag so much.

    Great video John. Have to add a pompano and a permit to your list of species to catch next winter. And I could be wrong, but I don't remember if you caught a mangrove snapper yet. They don't really strike artificials though for whatever reason.
    Quick question for you. When you're pulling up to a flat, what exactly are you looking for? Transitions between grass and sand with decent depth? Specifically for redfish and trout. Thanks.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 года назад +1

      Healthy grass. Unfortunately the bottom looks pretty barren in a lot of places. Ideally I'd like to see some pelicans around and some mullet jumping. That creek I was in was loaded with mangrove snappers, but didn't hit the lures. I have lots of them in the backyard and shrimp gets eaten immediately but a gulp lure will get hit only on the first cast or two before they seem to wise up. I have never seen a pompano or permit.

      Finding access points was a hobby before I even came down here. Lots of time on Google Earth, including street view. From there it's tide sites like this that show the plot. These tides are completely different than up North. tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaatidepredictions.html?id=8725393

    • @FattyMateo
      @FattyMateo 3 года назад

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing street views?😮 Are you "going rogue"? (launching at non-designated launches). I've done that a half dozen times, it's always a workout with the motorized kayak. Last time I did it at El Jobean bridge (maybe 40 miles north of you) and was rewarded with a big snook, small goliath and most importantly, a smalltooth sawfish. Probably my favorite fishing picture in 40 years.
      I use the "Tide Times" app because it shows current change as well as tide times, but I still feel lost much of the time. If you're ever bored and need an idea for off-water content, I sure would love to see you shoot a quick segment where you apply a tide schedule to a random piece of fl water.
      Anyway thanks again for your response, be safe out there👍 I've been staying home on the Myakka this week, I have big tarpon making some violent noises at low light and overnight and still haven't figured out how to get a bite😡

      @@FattyMateo I found that tide times alone are useless here and I must see plots. Sometimes there are flat spots in the tide. We're on one right now in St. James City for a few hours, so no sense in fishing. The tarpon videos I posted a few weeks ago are Caloosahatchie river fish and they responded well to those small zoom flukes I was throwing. You might try those. At night, I'd try Tsunami swim shads. The vibration from the paddle tail seems to help. I'm no expert on any of this.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing I guess I don't understand how the plots work. I need to go back and look at that closer.
      There's a younger guy who stays on a houseboat on the river near me. He's a local fishing guide, though I'm not sure how good he is. He says the tarpon make explosive noises at night/low light but he's never hooked one either. Which makes me wonder if they mate up here and the explosions are like egg releasing or something🤔 totally guessing. It is maddening. Wife and I were watching a movie in the living room last night and I had to leave, every 5 minutes it sounded like bowling balls hitting the water. I've struck out on 5" zoom flukes in every configuration, but I'm going to break out my striper gear ( tsunamis, eels my, SS darters ) tonight and see if I can get one to bite. 🤞

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 года назад

      Great question. I've tried it up North with poor results. The hair on a bucktail adds profile, float, and resistance on the retrieve. It's why they've been a goto lure for so many anglers for so many years.

    • @johnfrymier6095
      @johnfrymier6095 3 года назад

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing Yes, I get what the bucktail brings to the party. I moved down here from Pa 5 years ago, where I tied and used bucktails for smallmouth and streamers for trout for years. It would appear that most of these Floridians just use a plain jig with a soft plastic trailer ... they could well be missing a trick.

    John you keep saying grass flats. I am fishing up at Burnt Store, not far from you. My "grass flats" are snot grass. Are you really fishing turtle grass or eel grass as we call it up in Jersey or do you have snaot grass too?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 года назад

      They are blades of grass. Sorry I don't know what it is. "Snot" is what I think of that fouls everything. It's not that. You have decent winter tarpon fishing up there, correct?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 года назад

      I don't. My attitude toward the whole fishing and video thing is that the fishing comes first. It's a fishing trip, and if I can get it on video without a lot of trouble, great, but I'm not into making a TV show out of it. I'd rather just acquire video and add the important information with a voice over later. That's why I do very little talking for the camera's sake on the water.

    Its the gulp not the bucktail..fish your bucktail without the gulp..not so good..I bottom fish offshore with a bucktail but add squid or fresh cut bait and it catches..without the scent..not so much...

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 года назад +1

      If you watched the video all the way through you'll see that I switched to a plastic trailer and still caught well, including the biggest trout of the day and a snook. I have a lifetime of catching fish on bucktails without gulp, but in some situations, definitely with fluke, the Gulp helps.
