  • “There is a fine line between ruthless and reckless.”
    Keir Starmer’s “purging” of "hard left candidates" could backfire as it makes the path to scrapping the two child benefit cap “even harder”, says The Times and Sunday Times’s Claire Cohen.

      It’s really why you should ignore people like this. You can’t win. They want to moan and will find any way to do so.
      Another version I’ve come across is:
      “I don’t trust doctors. They’ll diagnose you with anything. Go by your gut.” *proceeds to act as if they know more*
      “If you’re that concerned then go and see the doctor. They’ll know what to do”

    Starmer is ruthless when it comes to attacking socialists. Less so when it comes to ending child poverty.

    • @swordarmstudios6052
      @swordarmstudios6052 2 месяца назад +4

      Considering how badly socialists mangle both the economy and the politics of a country - he should. conservatives couldn't keep their wackjobs in check , and Starmer isn't an idiot, and he is intending to not repeat their mistakes. It's not the policy he is fighting over. It's an excuse to dump some dead weight and consolidate control of the party.
      Not British, but I'm pretty impressed with Starmer far. I think his approach of 'ruthless moderation and pragmatism' is actually a breath of fresh air. The west faces some really hard problems. Childhood poverty is also a problem - but he needs to pick his battles and fight on the things that are actually possible and that are popular. People are sick of the goverment and just want to see it function. Once you have done the very hard work of getting people to trust it again - then you can get a bit more aggressive policy wise.
      60% of the country doesn't want the benefit beyond more than 2 people - right or wrong - it's what they want. Political capital is a limited resource and it must be spent wisely. He may have earned some political capital from the center of the country by going this way so publically. Next time he asks for something, people are gonna be a lot more inclined to be open minded.

    • @chrisrobinson1209
      @chrisrobinson1209 2 месяца назад +2

      The fact you use terms like ‘political capital’ and ‘consolidating control’ on an issue like child poverty tells me all I need to know. Heartless.

    • @swordarmstudios6052
      @swordarmstudios6052 2 месяца назад

      @@chrisrobinson1209 You may have forgotten that the west is in a war against actual fascism.
      Yes I talk in those terms. It's actually important that the bad guys lose, lest we find ourselves - through either incompetence or malice - a world war.
      Also this is how every political leader in history, including the great ones who actually advanced great causes - thinks. It's strategy, and trade-offs.
      Choosing to not sacrifice yourself over an issue to keep your powder dry so you can do something else is actually important. If labor starts instituting policies that ignore the will of the public, they will be out of power. That is how it works.
      Starmer also understands his mandate. It's a mandate against chaos. It's not a progressive reinventing of England. But if Starmer does well - then more progressive policy does become possible.

    This is the dumbest part of the row: Labour has suspended seven rebel MPs for voting for an amendment that aligns with Labour policy.
    There's a lot of nuance to this situation, but the result is that Labour is now having a row about a policy on which they all seem to agree. It looks like government politics hasn't stopped being utterly crazy after all.
    It's a cap on universal credit, not child benefit; this will go, but only when it is affordable, e.g., in the budget and costed, you can't have it both ways, can't demand to have a responsible party and then demand irresponsible actions.
    It was just a case of idiot MP's forcing a pointless situation. Even the Tories did not have this level of in-house stupidity.

    I'm generally supportive of Starmer, but this is being ruthless for the sake of it. A handful of rebels is absolutely no threat to a government with a massive majority, and severely punishing MPs for voting to ease poverty isn't a great look and doesn't seem morally justifiable.

    It could but it won't. The rebels signed up to the pledges and knew what would happen if they rebelled. It seems the right have more pressing issues including the reluctance of Farage to publish his financial affairs which is compulsory for all MPs. He could be suspended. Also, the tories are still tearing themselves to bits with 5 MPs contemplating defecting to Reform.
