Thank you for watching. This Toro mower's engine was terribly neglected and needed to be replaced. An available engine was his Honda from a Black Max mower. There were other options but this Honda replacement seemed to worth it.
Good Work. I’ve found that using an anti-seize compound on the crankshaft and engine bolts will help with removal in the future. Any time you have a steel bolt going into aluminum it’s a good idea. Seems like I’m always drilling or using a bolt extractor because the factory doesn’t use anti-seize.
Thanks for the tip I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel If and when I ever tear anything down I always anti-seize it all when it goes back up because I figure I'll be back in there sooner or later.
Doing the same w/B&S engine. My old engine has the belt but my donor engine doesn't. I had no idea the shaft can be removed to my engine! Thanks for the video.
No problem Dave Johnson and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you for helping us save money!
Thank You! I needed to see how to remove the "blade adaptor" and pully from the motor. Cool. Found your video by chance. Thanks again,
Glad it helped
Was going to swap a good working Briggs motor from a Craftsman self-propel 22" to a Toro Personal Pace 20" that runs but smokes after about 10 minutes of running. Looked like the same engine. They were close, but different keyways, so the swap would have worked until the key snapped. Now I think I'm going to fix the self-propel wheels on the craftsman and keep looking for a donor motor for the Toro.
that sounds like a good plan. thank you El Marko
there you have it. I never thought i would see an engine bolt break on youtube. i never had one that didn't break.left out the best part...drilling out the broken bolt and tapping. that's all day job.
You were right about that. It took too long to drill out.
@@HomeGaragechannel lost track of how many good quality drill bits I've broken drilling these darn broken bolts the last few weeks. 2 broken bolts just this week. one on Cylinder Head bolt and blower housing bolt. inconceivable.
@@WV591 what a shame
Great job 👍 with a little adjustment that'll make a great mower. At least she runs now!
Thank you Alan Marshall for the comment. It will require some extra attention but you're right at least she's running.
That's just like the Toro I just did an engine swap on, but I found another Toro with almost the same tecumseh engine for $20. Then I swapped the flywheel and electric start pieces.
Now I just need a charged battery. The bad engine was leaking oil from rubber case breather connection on top under the flywheel and the engine knocked.
Thank you lesswatt for the comment. Nice work. I've seen them leak there before too. Its. Strange place for a leak.
I think the blade bolt for the Honda is smaller than the one Toro used, that makes it very difficult to center the blade properly which is probably why it is vibrating so much. Just went through the same thing when I swapped a Craftsman Briggs for a dead Toro Techumseh. The cheapo MTD mowers use a smaller blade bolt than the Toros even though the shaft is the same size. I had to carefully measure the distance from the blade tip to the deck to get it even enough to stop the vibration.
I believe you are correct. The bolt is one size down.
Have the exact same mower with Tecumseh engine with electric start. Don't have a battery in battery holder but left it on as it makes a good water bottle holder when I'm mowing when It's really hot outside....
nice!
We have one of those Hondas on a mower that's pushing 20. The engine has (and more than likely will) outlast the deck.
Thank you Ray for the comment. The are really well built engines.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yep, so are the (in my opinion) older Briggs & Stratton engines. Then again B&S engines are practically indestructible, unless you do something catastrophic, like throw a rod or something.
@@QuackDealer21 yes I believe you are absolutely correct about that .
Due to the cracked deck on the Blackmax and the blown Tecumseh, I think that project was definitely worth it for the time being.
thank you
Also seems like a good blade balancing would help with the shakes and I got 2 quarts of 00 grease. Toots said that the Tractor Supply person didn't know anything about it and had to look it up. I got both quarts they had and that ought to last a while. GOOD stuff if you've ever got any doubts about what to use to lube stuff. This ALWAYS works because of it's makeup. BLESSINGS!
ah yes, that would definitely help out
@@HomeGaragechannel Always in the back of the old thinker.
7:30 you forgot the belt guard.
Thank you five speed ash for the comment. Yes I didn't replace the belt guard. That was on purpose.
As always, work with what you have! But what do you plan on doing with that large square hole on the left front of the mower deck???
I have a cover for it. I think you're the first person to even mention it.
@@HomeGaragechannel
I try not to bug people about menial items, but some things are like a burr under my saddle! Was alway's taught, " do it right or don't do it at all!"
@@michaelfougeroussejr9571 yes sir thanks I hate how lots of people that have no clue what there doing try to do things
Hit something bent front shield. Blew plastic plug out. The hole us if it is front wheel drive
That Honda deck cracked like that must be due to the motor shaft being bent. It looked to be vibrating also when you started it also. Nice video documenting the procedure however.
Thank you al b for the comment. You know you might be right.
There wasn't a belt guard for the rear wheel drive setup on the crank? looks like grass and dirt would sure fill everything up just if the ones for the front wheel drive was left off BUT I'm a Snapper fiend anyway. Good deal and Blessings!
I know right? it's kind of weird.
@@HomeGaragechannel This is one of those things that I don't understand all I know about it.
Thanks for the video. I have a Kohler engine i picked up for $10. was wondering what kind of deck to put it on? I guess it depends on the anchor bolt fit.
There's a good chance it will fit on most decks and don't worry if you have to drill one hole just to make it work.
Thanks for sharing. That was a lot of work! (Some Honda engines have a different shaft size and won't work with the existing adapter). Could have used your hand torch on the engine bolts prior to snapping off. :( The engine will sound much better if you adjust the valve lash and reseal the cover. ^_^
Thank you 999thenewman for the comment. Yes it still needs a little bit of work but at least runs now. Another one saved from the scrap yard.
I'm this same swap but looks like the shafts are different. Any suggestions?
Can use greenworks degreaser to get the dirt and oil off
Thanks for the tip. It was very difficult to get off the deck.
I broke a bolt off during a Briigs swap. Couldn't drill it out, must have been hardened
Yes it must have been hardened
Very good video and instructions thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I have the same project . very helpful
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Are you just guessing when it comes to crankshaft sizes and lengths? Or do you do some pre measuring beforehand?
I do some pre-measuring.
@@HomeGaragechannelWhat all needs to match?
@@norge696 the shaft diameter and the shaft length needs to be close but not exact.
@@HomeGaragechannel I can understand the length but if the diameter doesn't match then the blade adapter won't fit.
@@norge696 if the diameter doesn't match it just means you need to get an adapter that will fit the donor engine. The two sizes are 1" or 7/8". They make adapters for both.
I have to rebuild them when they're not badly damaged !
Thank you Russell Booth for the comment I appreciate it
I use air hammers for stuck pulleys
that works too.
Definetly has bent crank. Hit it with a sledgehammer to straighten it and it’ll sound better and shake less
Thanks for the video
Thank you Tomas De Paz for the comment I appreciate it.
do all of the verticle shaft engines bolt to any deck?? ive swapped many toro engines just never tested. (yes sounds stupid)
i literally always get lucky and find the right engine for the right deck. haha
no I don't think so
Will a Honda GCV160 engine from a non self-propelled Troy-bilt go on a Toro 21442 FWD mower? Will there be an issue with the shaft? Thank you.
to be honest, I don't know, I never got around to measuring the Shaft for the non self-propelled units. Either way, it's going to need to have a 1" shaft to go on the Toro
I personally wouldn’t sacrifice the electric start. But that’s just me. I’d also take the Tecumish over a junk Honda so I think I would just overhaul the Tecumish or find another one and swap out the flywheel.
I see your point
So I have 2 mowers one has broken bag and no walk along but it has a 190cc engine with very strong compression. The other has walk along and a primer bulb but it has a 130cc engine with weak compression. Should I do a motor swap if so is there a way to transfer the priming bulb would that be a carb swap as well? Thoughts?
The shaft sizes will be different. The smaller engine should also have the smaller diameter shaft, so you'll have to contend with the drive pulley not adapting. Why would you need to put the primer bulb on the engine without it? It should have some sort of choke system on there to help it start.
I have this same mower dec k with the old Tecumseh engine. Can the self propelled system be eliminated or left off with no adverse effects on this engine swap.
I would leave it alone
Nice video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Al Gorel for the comment.
Can this swap be done between the tecumseh and a Briggs that is on another Toro with bad transmission. I've only seen people do it with the Honda so unsure if Briggs and Stratton will fit the same way.
I believe so.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks I'm going to give it a shot.
Question I have the same mower and I want to take the self propell axle and pulley off how do I do it without the gears moving
I've never done that so I'm not sure.
Hey, can you make a video of swapping a Honda gxv140 engine off a Honda hrm215 and put the Honda engine on a Lawnboy insight mower? Thanks!
I would if I had both to do the swap.
I have done that several times in the past
it's quite a rewarding job to do isn't it?
What was the reason for not fixing the toro engine? What was so broken on it?
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. Yes the compression was low due to lack of lubrication so it was never going to run again.
Home Garage ah thank you. These engines are worth less than the cost of rebuilding them, so not worth the time or effort. Good video! Keep up the good work!
@@benkiist8218 thanks I will.
Did Snap-On make that power washer too...pretty weak.
Thank you for the comment
This is not related to the engine swap but when my echo srm 225 idles it makes and dinging or a chiming noise or a rattle why is that like sometimes when i squeeze the trigger a little it makes that rattle or chiming noise or dinging
I've noticed that too I always thought it was the clutch. Never worried me though. I thought it sounded unique. Thanks for the comment.
Check out my echo arm 225 ill be doing trimming videos in the summer
It’s just the clutch bell. Nothing to be alarmed about. My Old SRM 210 did that the whole 20 years that I owned it. My new SRM 2620T doesn’t do that.
Toro engine has 1" crank. A honda crank snub is small diameter isnt it? I got one of those weird briggs euro engines
on these two, they both 1" diameter shafts.
What size was the crankshaft? 7/8 or 1" ?
It's a 1" drive shaft. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Most owners of Tecumseh engines are so neglectful, they're really good if you just take care of them
you're absolutely correct, and that applies to all engines, most people just aren't aware of the care they need, and to be honest I don't blame them.
@@HomeGaragechannel for most people a lawn mower is a very small detail of their life, I agree
I have the same mower and hate the engine
I understand how you feel. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks for the great videos

Harbhor freight engine
that's an option but the shaft size is too small for the drive pulley and blade adapter
