I have this model of mower. Bought it used 14 years ago for $50. The engine is runs great. Did have some carb problems so I just replaced it. The reason I got it so cheap was because the drive system broke. I just disabled it and push it, more exercise for me.
@@kevincolonel3070 fixing the drive is not very difficult u need to check under mower and if u dont see a belt thats why or if u do and when u press self propelled feature and doesnt tighten the belt u need to adjust it so it engages more

However, while going over the transmission, I found that where a removable woodruff key was to be used, they instead tack welded a square peg, thus rendering the unit unserviceable. I can only guess that the production line ran out of woodruff keys and wanted to keep the line going and adopt this shortcut. I returned the parts I had ordered, and the dealer waived the restocking fee on account of the manufacturer having made this modification from its design. That was fifteen years ago, and it is still running, no complaints here.
@@richardmorse5307 Surprised to see a response on a video 2 years old haha. Honing can be done with a 3 stone or ball hone. You can find them at the auto store, motorcycle shops, amazon etc. You're trying to clean up the cylinder and break the glaze for new rings to reseat. Refitting the rod is just purchasing a new connecting rod then verifying the fitment, as well as polishing the crankshaft journal. If there's too much slop good luck finding anything undersized, sadly standard is the only size you'll find. Rings and piston are easy. If your piston is still good, then just order new rings and reinstall. If the piston has damage then replacing both would be a good idea. I've skipped over a bunch of stuff about rebuilding, but I'm sure you can find videos online and figure it out. These are very hardy engines and don't really take much to run well. Any parts not available you can sometimes find "NOS" or "Like new" on eBay, but it can be a gamble.
I'm actually in the process of repairing an engine like this one (it has a blown connecting rod and worn rings), the other one i have is in good shape in my craftsman mower and despite some abuse it received by previous users it has held up great, there are indeed some things which are not very desirable about Tecumseh engines, and the fact that they are no longer being produced and parts can be hard to get makes it even worse, but i actually like them and if they are well maintained they can last for several years; by the way, using cardboard from a cereal box works pretty good although it may seem sketchy
The gas cap is not missing the silver piece. That's the new style and they did away with the metal piece because it kept falling off. The ones with the metal piece also has a green piece of foam under the disc.
I grew up with a couple different tecumseh mowers, one nearly exactly like this one. I always enjoyed them and liked it. I'd definitely pick it up and use it

@@HomeGaragechannel I was able to, luckily the hose was nearby. I don’t know where it started from but flames came from the top cover. It was too far gone at that point so i put it on the curb.
I have the same mower with the Craftsman designation. It was a freebie with similar symptoms. Flywheel key was partially sheared and the carb was cruddy. Air filter was oil soaked, so it was probably tipped on the carb side. The Amazon China carb I installed came with fuel line, air and fuel filter, and a fuel shut off. Seems to work fine. My Snapper Ninja 6.5HP Briggs has a pressurized oil system but does not have an oil filter. I run Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 in it. It does not use oil but I change it regularly (twice a year).
Have almost the same mower only difference being that it's a rear wheel drive with the the personal pace self propelled system. Picked it up a little over month ago as the deck on my old mower rotted. This mower was well maintained by it's previous owner and has a solid deck on it and runs as good as any new mower out there that I've owned and/or used. The 6.5 hp Tecumseh engine on my mower is a work horse plenty of power with no issues what's so ever.
A good deal of the time anything in the free pile is from lack of maintenance, which usually works out great for me 🤗 I once came across a $300 vacuum that was an upright bagless, I took it home and discovered the previous owners didn't realize you had to clean the filter above the canister when you used it. That thing had so much dirt and debris in it, it stopped functioning-they tossed it because they thought it was broken LOL!
I have exact same model and it has been awesome. Been using it since like 04 or 05. Dad bought it at Lowes as a recon and I think that's why it is better than usual.
I believe that is similar to the (older?) LEV 120 motor which is very powerful if you did something to the carburetor that the EPA really does not want you to do.
The muffler is very close to the intake pipe and the exhaust/intake ports are reversed from traditional Tecumseh practice I believe for emissions reason,they wanted heat transfer to the intake pipe in order to get the engine to run with leaner jetting.
I have a toro recycler rear wheel drive. It's a 6.5 tecumseh and I bought it in 2004. I use it mainly to trim with around bushes and I have a bank that is too steep for my lawn tractor. It has been very reliable. The only thing I don't like is the airfilter.
You inspired me to pick up a old kawasaki for my brother i checked spark, compression, fuel. The fuel was old and spark wasn’t working. After fixing it ran almost like new.
4:40 top mount breather has hose routed to the carburetor airhorn area so improperly tipping the engine probably caused oil to go through the hose where it then reached the air filter and some got burned onto the spark plug the oiled air filter then made the engine run as if having a choke on part way all the time some had hose just hanging loose down the side of the engine and some had it routed into the air filter box ("Premier Engine")
I have an older green Craftman mower with this Tecumseh engine and it is awesome! It doesn’t have a bag so I rarely use it but it runs like a beast! It does have that very bad misfire when it is cold however, typically it goes away when it warms up. Maybe I’ll look into that.
Toro states that you should not screw the oil filler cap down when checking the oil level. Just set the cap down onto the filler tube, check and then top off to the normal fill line.

Just FYI the self propel gearbox on these great old Toro mowers is totally serviceable, so if the previous owner hasn’t tinkered with it and lost the drivetrain parts you can buy the individual bushings and gears for a few bucks to fix up the drive without buying a whole new unit. I always liked these mowers and especially the Tecumseh engines. When I bought two of these new back in the early 2000’s I specified that I wanted them equipped with the Tecumseh engine instead of the Briggs (although both are good). I never cared for the mulching function but with the side chute slightly modified to lift it about 1/2” they were unbeatable IMO.
thank you mjg263 for the information, the only problem is that the whole drive system, from snap ring to input bushing is worn and loose, which I've never seen before. I'm sure I could replace the bushings, and gears, but would feel more comfortable replacing the unit.

Love watching your videos , I basically can service all my own gear now . I have a toro recycling commercial mower rear drive . Who knows the age on it mate 20 years , nice large deck on it . It had a blade engage lever . The cable went and broke , and basically I was stuffed . There was no model plate of number on the mower whatsoever, I guess it had fallen off . Well to source the cable was nearly impossible ( I’m in Australia ) While we have toro here , no one knew which cable I needed , and I called the US I called toro , I went round in circles .. drive me crazy as the mower would start and run and propel , you just couldn’t engage the blade . Ended up going to a toro collector or specialist, and he welded the blade . And removed the blade engage !

Have a troy bilt weedeater 4cycle it stars and revs up well but the moment the head starts to cut it slows down or wont turn. The rpms reach high when you just hit the gas but any pressure from cutting the motor slows down tried different shafts being there interchangeable. Not sure/looked for carburetor adjustments but it only has an idle screw tried looking online couldn't find anything on it.
That sounds like a bottom end knock to me, probably caused by excess running with low oil. Every time I get a mower with the oil below the bottom of the dipstick it has knock or smokes. That compression reading was surprisingly good given the lack of oil though so it might go ok for a long time yet with regular oil changes. I like Tecumseh engines when they work properly but the design of the intake/exhaust system and the requirement to use about 9 million different tools to disassemble and adjust them gets frustrating. I'm not sure I follow your thoughts regarding the exhaust valve clearance and pullback from the starter rope. Slightly loose valve clearances would just cause excess noise and tight clearances, to the point of holding a valve open, would cause a backfire from the carb or exhaust, depending which valve is affected. A loose blade can cause pullback sometimes, maybe this could be part of the knocking noise too, so you might get away with a healthier engine than I thought.
Loose valve clearance can cause a centrifugal compression release to not open the valve as much as the engineer intended--but I don't like the compression release anyway. Some engines with electric start however use too weak starters and small batteries that won't turn the engine over unless the compression release is working fully as designed. Pitiful. A tight valve with not enough or null clearance once hot will burn. And also burn the seat.
Online you hear a lot of people complaining about Tecumseh engines. A few drawbacks on Tecumseh engines this size are: don't like the air filter design, carburetors are more prone to leak, and having a little more time taking off and putting on the carburetor. Other than that the Tecumseh engines themselves seem to be solid and dependable. Toro self propelled mowers come with Tecumseh, Kohler, and Briggs and Stratton, depending upon the model and year.
I picked one of these up a week ago. just needed a carb clean and $6 OEM carb kit. runs like a top. A lot of these mowers were run into the ground since Tecumseh went out of business in 2008. The one I found was in VERY good shape. The blade was practically brand new. They're not really fun to work on, very finicky too.
I would fix a tecumseh, I just worked on 3 this year after not seeing any last year. 2 needed valve adjustments. I would have cleaned the carbon in the head given how that plug looked.
I am fine with the air filter design, I just be extra careful when I use a mower with this engine. I used this exact model when I was a kid, we only got rid of it because the pull cord snapped and my father wanted to upgrade, I could’ve fixed it if I wasn’t that young.
Possible that isn't the right key (flywheel locator)but one someone put on after damaging the original-I believe some originals have a slight "jog" that changes the degreeing of the flywheel slightly vs. a straight key--if that key is steel and not soft metal it is not the right one A damaged /loose blade or blade adapter can also make it "kick back" when trying to start

You didn't mention if it was a engine pulse driven pump , or cam driven. Either way, the diaphragm might have developed a tear, so it's leaking. I would invest in a new pump
Personally, I never have understood why the need for a self propelled walk behind mower. As long as the wheels and bearings are in good shape, mowers like this are easy to push. That being said, I have two "push" mowers that came with Tecumseh engines. When I got them the engines were junk and not running but the mower decks, wheels, handles, etc were all in really good shape. So I replaced the engines with Predator engines from Harbor Freight. The swaps were fairly easy and only required different size blade adapters and the addition of throttle cables. We have been using these two mowers for 4 mowing seasons. I just pulled them out of storage this past Saturday to get them ready for another season. I spent about an hour changing the oil, replacing the air filters, and sharpening the blades. They still run like new.
very nice, The self propel, is just another feature to sell. I've had a few dealings with the Predator lawn mower engines, and they are decent. Too bad they don't see them anymore.

It's emissionized so it won't run 100% smooth. I think that one has the "pilot jet" behind the plastic cap in the place where older Tecumseh carbs had idle needle screws. That pilot jet is related to whether it runs reasonably smooth without "hunting". Much smaller jet hole in it than the "jet nut" hole in the bowl jet.
Hey hey hey, i think toro mowers have a lot of things that can go wrong over time, like the toro mower that I have, the gear box is all worn out, and its not that old, I believe its. A 2015 modal. But I’m sure i can find good generic part for it.

Did you notice the area ot bottom of tank? That holds water. Have a mower sat 2 years started 2nd pull still had lots of water in bottom of tank in lower area
wait....hole up....you had a toro with the 2 stroke suzuki? my dad had a lawn service for 19 years. we used those as trim mowers. those mowers were the shit!!! i mowed a waist high yard with one of those!!
You should add a fuel shutoff in the fuel line. Helps if used when the engine is to be shut down. I hope the bottom end of the engine didn't get damaged by low oil running. Some of those mufflers make a noise that sounds somewhat like engine knock. Any time you have occasion to take the metal shroud off of the cylinder and flywheel it is a good idea to clean away any grass that has collected under there,even perhaps using a blower,shop vac or even shooting some compressed air. Also a possibility of checking that the head bolts are at proper torque. I guess you drained the last of the old oil before replenishing the oil with fresh oil? (Noticed the next video where the oil being drained looked awful and also how the mower was tipped,hope that the new air filter didn't get lunched.)
So I bought I new transmission from Amazon and replaced as instructed in the video. Upon engaging the drive, the both wheels now turn only in reverse. The replacement transmission seems identical. What gives? Thanks!
Of course it has been "burning oil" because of ingesting it from the soaked air filter and probably also accounting for the fouled spark plug. beware,not sure about this one but some with a "mechanical/centrifugal compression release" will give low compression test readings even if nothing is wrong with the compression. ( 9:00) 10:09 you could do well with some Jet Spray Instant Gumcutter! --but beware not to get it into your eyes,need goggles or something. (There might be plastic tube in the "center leg" of the carb that should not come into contact with the Jet Spray Gumcutter or any other carburetor cleaner)
i had this exact mower. the carb constantly gave me fits. i wound up completely ghetto rigging it. i converted it to propane. ran it for 2 or 3 seasons like that till it got drowned by hurricane irma.
@@HomeGaragechannel it was easy. i removed the fuel tank and recoil started. i used a BBQ regulator, a 90 degree throw ball valve, and some bits to step down the bbq regulator down to the 1 lb bottles, and the fuel line output to 1/4 inch and pipped it into the carb where the crank case vent went into. then i would use a drill to spin the motor and with the motor turning open the valve until the motor caught and ran. then adjusted it to the rich side and the back off a hair and then mow. worked great. i'd use 2 bottles of propane a mow and refilled them from a BBQ tank.
Just had a similar situation with the exact same fly wheel puller on a fly wheel with a sheared pin. I do not have an impact wrench tho, used a ratchet and socket to tighten the puller and ended up cracking the flywheel necessitating replacement. Any suggestions on how not to do that again?
@@HomeGaragechannel Guess I should have elaborated more. I beat the top of the crankshaft while lifting up with a crow bar until I thought I was gonna drive it through the bottom of the block!! This thing sheared the key about 90 degrees from in time!! I picked it up for $10.00 and was able to find a cheap used fly wheel, so got it running again. I swear the key looked almost melted!

no, the blades in conjunction with the deck combo doesn't cut as well as my other mower, which I didn't mention. that mower has dual blades and a deck design that literally chops the grass to tiny pieces.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yeah, I've heard others say the Atomic blade tends to create a slurry when the grass is wet and or long. From personal experience, I've seen the decks get pretty caked to the point where the mower shuts down and you've got to scrape the grass out. I've seen that happen on some other mowers too though and wonder how much is related to the blade and/or deck.
you are absolutely right. that honda I like to use wasn't cutting so great, so I looked under the deck and there was a fair amount of grass packed on it. I washed the grass away and it was its normal self again. It had been raining so much recently that I had no choice but mow several hours after the rain, and this is what happened to the mulching ability, it was reduced.
Usually, the quantity of oil that a lawn mower engine requires is: -Tecumseh-Briggs&Stratton: 600ml -Honda: 400ml Loncin (a chinese manufacturer): 400 to 600ml (depending on the model) -Kawasaki: 600ml (650ml with oil filter) Those quantities are the most common on small lawn mower engines. The quantity may vary if there is a oil filter (like kawasaki).
Grouse video and yep i.d fix them lovely engines and the next video should be looking the wheels forward function as there might be something obstructing them or a seized part etc.
I have a problem again, I used my Chinese combi machine, the throttle does not work well, it only runs at full speed. I turned it off at full speed, Now it won't start. When I pull the recoil starter it makes strange noises and sometimes the rope slips out of my hands. It has compression and spark. What can I do? Thanks in advance.
take the spark plug out and see if it's wet, while the plug is out, pull the rope several times, let it dry like this for a couple of hours, then put the plug back in and try starting it again.
yes I'm Glad you asked. Looking to get a dial indicator to see how bad a crankshaft is bent, some new hearing protection, and that ultra sonic cleaner. Might get some sockets but not sure just yet.
I have a question my grandpa have me a push mower and it runs but I only starts with starter fluid and after I runs grate but what do you think I should do to fix it
as you long you can confirm that the choke flap is fully closed when you move the lever to the choke position , then it might mean that the bowl gasket is leaking some air, which is making the choke not work as well.
(deleted),updated I see the tube is routed to the carb airhorn, if the engine is tipped wrong oil comes out the tube and fouls the filter and carb and even gets into the engine via the intake pipe. You can't tip that thing such that the spark plug points to the sky without making an oily mess of the air filter,especially if it's a bit overfilled as to oil. Might have lost some oil from improper tipping. It is a mistake to try to start that thing with the oil as low as it appears to be on the dipstick!
Hello! I have a toro 6.5 with electric start and the rope does full back sometimes and when the engine starts the engine makes like a popping noise when running. Help.
I had a lot of experience with Tecumseh, back in my working days. They were just a different style of engine. I had one that was an 8HP with a recoil start only. Talk about hard on a guy's back! I'm not sure they are even in business as Tecumseh, anymore. If I remember correctly they got in trouble for price fixing or price rigging or some such nonsense. Got sued. Don't know what ever came of them after that. If I found one for a good deal, I would not hesitate at all to buy it. They're just not a Briggs, is all.

Have to say not keen on Techumseh engines as the all seem to use oil as the get old people do no check oil level and the knock ot break a con rod, also having to undo the carb from the engine the threads can strip, which is a pain .
I don't know about gasoline in Canada. But no, just because it's 91 octane , doesn't mean it's 100% gasoline, it needs to say someone where on the pump
Sounds like a loose blade to me, A loose blade can cause a kick at the rope when you pull it. Your guess that it may have been the flywheel key is the usual cause though.
My gf picked up a craftsman with tecumseh mower in 2010, used for $50. She never checked the oil. I didn't have a mower so when we bought a house we just used hers. To date I have never changed the oil, ive never even checked it until yesterday. She never did either. So it's gone at least from 2010 until today without an oil change. And it doesn't even smoke. Anyway this one doesn't have an oil dipstick, it has the older little twist cap near the bottom of the block. I will say the oil is as black as my coffee lol. Anyway how to tell what the correct level is? There is like a slot that seems like it could be used as an indicator but I might be wrong. So does anyone know? I do have trouble starting it from time to time, it runs on prime then quits. I clean the little holes in the main jet and it's ok. It's a beast, it just won't quit. And strangely even though I haven't sharpened the blade since we got it, it still cuts the grass with minimal tearing and busts through brush easily. Great mower.
@ yeah i dont have access to non ethanol unless i buy from big store i use fresh gas and everything its the gasket themself that disintegrate i got a pack of 12 Briggs and stratton carb bowl gaskets and those are the ones that disintigrated
I would fix that one up & yes,I grew up with people who couldn't be bothered fixing that one up so I got bored with them & moved on from them in life which is kind of why I studied at least 1 trade during & after high school because I got bored with the place & the people in it - they were too much like one of them who couldn't be bothered. I mean,I've studied some automotive & the whole electrical trade course at tech which I got my certificate then got an apprenticeship to be an electrical fitter/mechanic which I found much more interesting than school & whoever was there. It looks like that mower may have been stored vertically because the spark plug was totally fouled up & I gave my B&S lawnmower a re ring almost 2 years ago because the spark plug started fouling up like that. There was about ,0.045" of ring clearance which was well over the 0.032" reject limit as specified by Briggs and Stratton,the new piston ring gap was 0.009" which was very tight & now the engine uses bugger all oil & the spark plug electrodes run grey !
Tecumseh engines work just fine; I don't get the hatred thing. As easy as any to work on, and easier than many. I sure do miss the carb. bowl drain valves engines used to have. Easy to drain off the water and sediment.

are you cutting more than an inch or grass? meaning is your grass, say 4 inches tall from the ground, but you have your mower set to cut to position 3, which is perhaps 2.5"? If so, your ending could be a bit down on power, but I think If you only cut an Inch at a time, the mower would have a better chance of not bogging down.
Tecumseh engines are not so bad , I have fixed and used them for a long time . They seem to really like clean engine oil and fresh gas . they will not take as much abuse as a briggs will take and still run .
that's a good idea, However, I'll spoil it just a bit.. the problem is multipart and very complicated. In fact when you see the video, I'm kind stuck as what to do.
Tecumseh's get a bad rap but they are really very solid. Just look at how many are still being used more than a decade after the co. went under. Plus, there are still plenty of parts available online attesting to their longevity. Sure, the filter setup is kinda weak, but every engine has a quirk or two. Why are Tecumseh engines dreaded? I know nothing about them, other than that people seem to not like them. I have so far surmised that Tecumseh was a manufacturer/brand, like Briggs & Stratton and Kohler are.
had both B&S & Tecumseh on the same Snapper deck. Tecumseh was the only one that spit a rod out of the block, while mowing. I keep my oil level 'up' as best I can. But that engine let go. Twelve years is about what they last, Briggs or Tecumseh. But Briggs just start using too much oil, Tecumseh will 'snap' right there in the grass..... ?? Can't say I hate one, but I'm on my second B&S engine. Mower's middle aged at 37. : ) Heart Transplant. My Snapper deck is drilled to now accept either one as a 'donor'.

Actually just repaired our exact same mower. Rod and rings were done so I ordered a whole set for $45, honed the cylinder and it runs like new.

I've skipped over a bunch of stuff about rebuilding, but I'm sure you can find videos online and figure it out. These are very hardy engines and don't really take much to run well. Any parts not available you can sometimes find "NOS" or "Like new" on eBay, but it can be a gamble.

I'm actually in the process of repairing an engine like this one (it has a blown connecting rod and worn rings), the other one i have is in good shape in my craftsman mower and despite some abuse it received by previous users it has held up great, there are indeed some things which are not very desirable about Tecumseh engines, and the fact that they are no longer being produced and parts can be hard to get makes it even worse, but i actually like them and if they are well maintained they can last for several years; by the way, using cardboard from a cereal box works pretty good although it may seem sketchy

The gas cap is not missing the silver piece. That's the new style and they did away with the metal piece because it kept falling off. The ones with the metal piece also has a green piece of foam under the disc.

I had one of these mowers, one day I was trying to start it and it caught on fire. No leaks, just spontaneously caught on fire.

I have the same mower with the Craftsman designation. It was a freebie with similar symptoms. Flywheel key was partially sheared and the carb was cruddy. Air filter was oil soaked, so it was probably tipped on the carb side. The Amazon China carb I installed came with fuel line, air and fuel filter, and a fuel shut off. Seems to work fine. My Snapper Ninja 6.5HP Briggs has a pressurized oil system but does not have an oil filter. I run Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 in it. It does not use oil but I change it regularly (twice a year).

Have almost the same mower only difference being that it's a rear wheel drive with the the personal pace self propelled system. Picked it up a little over month ago as the deck on my old mower rotted. This mower was well maintained by it's previous owner and has a solid deck on it and runs as good as any new mower out there that I've owned and/or used. The 6.5 hp Tecumseh engine on my mower is a work horse plenty of power with no issues what's so ever.

A good deal of the time anything in the free pile is from lack of maintenance, which usually works out great for me 🤗 I once came across a $300 vacuum that was an upright bagless, I took it home and discovered the previous owners didn't realize you had to clean the filter above the canister when you used it. That thing had so much dirt and debris in it, it stopped functioning-they tossed it because they thought it was broken LOL!
that's how things work nowadays.
I have exact same model and it has been awesome. Been using it since like 04 or 05. Dad bought it at Lowes as a recon and I think that's why it is better than usual.

I believe that is similar to the (older?) LEV 120 motor which is very powerful if you did something to the carburetor that the EPA really does not want you to do.
The muffler is very close to the intake pipe and the exhaust/intake ports are reversed from traditional Tecumseh practice I believe for emissions reason,they wanted heat transfer to the intake pipe in order to get the engine to run with leaner jetting.

I have a toro recycler rear wheel drive. It's a 6.5 tecumseh and I bought it in 2004. I use it mainly to trim with around bushes and I have a bank that is too steep for my lawn tractor. It has been very reliable. The only thing I don't like is the airfilter.

You inspired me to pick up a old kawasaki for my brother i checked spark, compression, fuel. The fuel was old and spark wasn’t working. After fixing it ran almost like new.

4:40 top mount breather has hose routed to the carburetor airhorn area so improperly tipping the engine probably caused oil to go through the hose where it then reached the air filter and some got burned onto the spark plug the oiled air filter then made the engine run as if having a choke on part way all the time
some had hose just hanging loose down the side of the engine and some had it routed into the air filter box ("Premier Engine")

I have an older green Craftman mower with this Tecumseh engine and it is awesome! It doesn’t have a bag so I rarely use it but it runs like a beast! It does have that very bad misfire when it is cold however, typically it goes away when it warms up. Maybe I’ll look into that.

Toro states that you should not screw the oil filler cap down when checking the oil level. Just set the cap down onto the filler tube, check and then top off to the normal fill line.

That was fun, thanks! Just FYI the self propel gearbox on these great old Toro mowers is totally serviceable, so if the previous owner hasn’t tinkered with it and lost the drivetrain parts you can buy the individual bushings and gears for a few bucks to fix up the drive without buying a whole new unit. I always liked these mowers and especially the Tecumseh engines. When I bought two of these new back in the early 2000’s I specified that I wanted them equipped with the Tecumseh engine instead of the Briggs (although both are good). I never cared for the mulching function but with the side chute slightly modified to lift it about 1/2” they were unbeatable IMO.
thank you mjg263 for the information, the only problem is that the whole drive system, from snap ring to input bushing is worn and loose, which I've never seen before. I'm sure I could replace the bushings, and gears, but would feel more comfortable replacing the unit.

I have a toro recycling commercial mower rear drive . Who knows the age on it mate 20 years , nice large deck on it .
It had a blade engage lever . The cable went and broke , and basically I was stuffed . There was no model plate of number on the mower whatsoever, I guess it had fallen off .
Well to source the cable was nearly impossible ( I’m in Australia )
While we have toro here , no one knew which cable I needed , and I called the US I called toro , I went round in circles ..
drive me crazy as the mower would start and run and propel , you just couldn’t engage the blade .
Ended up going to a toro collector or specialist, and he welded the blade . And removed the blade engage !

Have a troy bilt weedeater 4cycle it stars and revs up well but the moment the head starts to cut it slows down or wont turn. The rpms reach high when you just hit the gas but any pressure from cutting the motor slows down tried different shafts being there interchangeable. Not sure/looked for carburetor adjustments but it only has an idle screw tried looking online couldn't find anything on it.
there you might be a problem with the drive shaft or the couple in the in middle if you happen to have a split shaft.
That sounds like a bottom end knock to me, probably caused by excess running with low oil. Every time I get a mower with the oil below the bottom of the dipstick it has knock or smokes. That compression reading was surprisingly good given the lack of oil though so it might go ok for a long time yet with regular oil changes.
I like Tecumseh engines when they work properly but the design of the intake/exhaust system and the requirement to use about 9 million different tools to disassemble and adjust them gets frustrating.
I'm not sure I follow your thoughts regarding the exhaust valve clearance and pullback from the starter rope. Slightly loose valve clearances would just cause excess noise and tight clearances, to the point of holding a valve open, would cause a backfire from the carb or exhaust, depending which valve is affected. A loose blade can cause pullback sometimes, maybe this could be part of the knocking noise too, so you might get away with a healthier engine than I thought.

Loose valve clearance can cause a centrifugal compression release to not open the valve as much as the engineer intended--but I don't like the compression release anyway. Some engines with electric start however use too weak starters and small batteries that won't turn the engine over unless the compression release is working fully as designed. Pitiful.
A tight valve with not enough or null clearance once hot will burn. And also burn the seat.
Online you hear a lot of people complaining about Tecumseh engines. A few drawbacks on Tecumseh engines this size are: don't like the air filter design, carburetors are more prone to leak, and having a little more time taking off and putting on the carburetor. Other than that the Tecumseh engines themselves seem to be solid and dependable. Toro self propelled mowers come with Tecumseh, Kohler, and Briggs and Stratton, depending upon the model and year.
It's definitely a different animal, but it's very durable.
if the oil was barely on the dipstick wouldn't it make sense to put some more oil in it so you didn't damage it when you started it
it had been ran like for years. I don't think a few minutes is going to hurt it.
I picked one of these up a week ago. just needed a carb clean and $6 OEM carb kit. runs like a top. A lot of these mowers were run into the ground since Tecumseh went out of business in 2008. The one I found was in VERY good shape. The blade was practically brand new. They're not really fun to work on, very finicky too.

I would fix a tecumseh, I just worked on 3 this year after not seeing any last year. 2 needed valve adjustments. I would have cleaned the carbon in the head given how that plug looked.

I am fine with the air filter design, I just be extra careful when I use a mower with this engine. I used this exact model when I was a kid, we only got rid of it because the pull cord snapped and my father wanted to upgrade, I could’ve fixed it if I wasn’t that young.

Possible that isn't the right key (flywheel locator)but one someone put on after damaging the original-I believe some originals have a slight "jog" that changes the degreeing of the flywheel slightly vs. a straight key--if that key is steel and not soft metal it is not the right one
A damaged /loose blade or blade adapter can also make it "kick back" when trying to start

You didn't mention if it was a engine pulse driven pump , or cam driven. Either way, the diaphragm might have developed a tear, so it's leaking. I would invest in a new pump

Personally, I never have understood why the need for a self propelled walk behind mower. As long as the wheels and bearings are in good shape, mowers like this are easy to push. That being said, I have two "push" mowers that came with Tecumseh engines. When I got them the engines were junk and not running but the mower decks, wheels, handles, etc were all in really good shape. So I replaced the engines with Predator engines from Harbor Freight. The swaps were fairly easy and only required different size blade adapters and the addition of throttle cables. We have been using these two mowers for 4 mowing seasons. I just pulled them out of storage this past Saturday to get them ready for another season. I spent about an hour changing the oil, replacing the air filters, and sharpening the blades. They still run like new.
very nice, The self propel, is just another feature to sell. I've had a few dealings with the Predator lawn mower engines, and they are decent. Too bad they don't see them anymore.

It's emissionized so it won't run 100% smooth.
I think that one has the "pilot jet" behind the plastic cap in the place where older Tecumseh carbs had idle needle screws. That pilot jet is related to whether it runs reasonably smooth without "hunting". Much smaller jet hole in it than the "jet nut" hole in the bowl jet.

You should add a fuel shutoff in the fuel line. Helps if used when the engine is to be shut down.
I hope the bottom end of the engine didn't get damaged by low oil running. Some of those mufflers make a noise that sounds somewhat like engine knock.
Any time you have occasion to take the metal shroud off of the cylinder and flywheel it is a good idea to clean away any grass that has collected under there,even perhaps using a blower,shop vac or even shooting some compressed air.
Also a possibility of checking that the head bolts are at proper torque.
I guess you drained the last of the old oil before replenishing the oil with fresh oil?
(Noticed the next video where the oil being drained looked awful and also how the mower was tipped,hope that the new air filter didn't get lunched.)

So I bought I new transmission from Amazon and replaced as instructed in the video. Upon engaging the drive, the both wheels now turn only in reverse. The replacement transmission seems identical. What gives? Thanks!

Of course it has been "burning oil" because of ingesting it from the soaked air filter and probably also accounting for the fouled spark plug.
beware,not sure about this one but some with a "mechanical/centrifugal compression release" will give low compression test readings even if nothing is wrong with the compression. ( 9:00)
10:09 you could do well with some Jet Spray Instant Gumcutter! --but beware not to get it into your eyes,need goggles or something. (There might be plastic tube in the "center leg" of the carb that should not come into contact with the Jet Spray Gumcutter or any other carburetor cleaner)

i had this exact mower. the carb constantly gave me fits. i wound up completely ghetto rigging it. i converted it to propane. ran it for 2 or 3 seasons like that till it got drowned by hurricane irma.

@@HomeGaragechannel it was easy. i removed the fuel tank and recoil started. i used a BBQ regulator, a 90 degree throw ball valve, and some bits to step down the bbq regulator down to the 1 lb bottles, and the fuel line output to 1/4 inch and pipped it into the carb where the crank case vent went into. then i would use a drill to spin the motor and with the motor turning open the valve until the motor caught and ran. then adjusted it to the rich side and the back off a hair and then mow. worked great. i'd use 2 bottles of propane a mow and refilled them from a BBQ tank.

Just had a similar situation with the exact same fly wheel puller on a fly wheel with a sheared pin. I do not have an impact wrench tho, used a ratchet and socket to tighten the puller and ended up cracking the flywheel necessitating replacement. Any suggestions on how not to do that again?

@@HomeGaragechannel Guess I should have elaborated more. I beat the top of the crankshaft while lifting up with a crow bar until I thought I was gonna drive it through the bottom of the block!! This thing sheared the key about 90 degrees from in time!! I picked it up for $10.00 and was able to find a cheap used fly wheel, so got it running again. I swear the key looked almost melted!
yes I see, I also noticed that when the key Is sheared, it's much more difficult to Remove the flywheel. So I can understand it happening.

no, the blades in conjunction with the deck combo doesn't cut as well as my other mower, which I didn't mention. that mower has dual blades and a deck design that literally chops the grass to tiny pieces.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yeah, I've heard others say the Atomic blade tends to create a slurry when the grass is wet and or long. From personal experience, I've seen the decks get pretty caked to the point where the mower shuts down and you've got to scrape the grass out. I've seen that happen on some other mowers too though and wonder how much is related to the blade and/or deck.
you are absolutely right. that honda I like to use wasn't cutting so great, so I looked under the deck and there was a fair amount of grass packed on it. I washed the grass away and it was its normal self again. It had been raining so much recently that I had no choice but mow several hours after the rain, and this is what happened to the mulching ability, it was reduced.
Usually, the quantity of oil that a lawn mower engine requires is:
-Tecumseh-Briggs&Stratton: 600ml
-Honda: 400ml
Loncin (a chinese manufacturer): 400 to 600ml (depending on the model)
-Kawasaki: 600ml (650ml with oil filter)
Those quantities are the most common on small lawn mower engines. The quantity may vary if there is a oil filter (like kawasaki).

I have a problem again, I used my Chinese combi machine, the throttle does not work well, it only runs at full speed. I turned it off at full speed, Now it won't start. When I pull the recoil starter it makes strange noises and sometimes the rope slips out of my hands. It has compression and spark. What can I do? Thanks in advance.
take the spark plug out and see if it's wet, while the plug is out, pull the rope several times, let it dry like this for a couple of hours, then put the plug back in and try starting it again.
Yeah I would try and fix it. I like Tecumseh snowblower engines better but a lawn mower is a lawn mower

yes I'm Glad you asked. Looking to get a dial indicator to see how bad a crankshaft is bent, some new hearing protection, and that ultra sonic cleaner. Might get some sockets but not sure just yet.

what kind of starting system does it have right now? a push primer, a choke lever? or is an auto choke, where you just pull it to start?
No primer and I have to manually choke it
The brand is cub cadet and the model is 12a18mc 056
as you long you can confirm that the choke flap is fully closed when you move the lever to the choke position , then it might mean that the bowl gasket is leaking some air, which is making the choke not work as well.

(deleted),updated I see the tube is routed to the carb airhorn, if the engine is tipped wrong oil comes out the tube and fouls the filter and carb and even gets into the engine via the intake pipe. You can't tip that thing such that the spark plug points to the sky without making an oily mess of the air filter,especially if it's a bit overfilled as to oil.
Might have lost some oil from improper tipping. It is a mistake to try to start that thing with the oil as low as it appears to be on the dipstick!
Hello! I have a toro 6.5 with electric start and the rope does full back sometimes and when the engine starts the engine makes like a popping noise when running. Help.

I had a lot of experience with Tecumseh, back in my working days. They were just a different style of engine. I had one that was an 8HP with a recoil start only. Talk about hard on a guy's back! I'm not sure they are even in business as Tecumseh, anymore. If I remember correctly they got in trouble for price fixing or price rigging or some such nonsense. Got sued. Don't know what ever came of them after that. If I found one for a good deal, I would not hesitate at all to buy it. They're just not a Briggs, is all.

Have to say not keen on Techumseh engines as the all seem to use oil as the get old people do no check oil level and the knock ot break a con rod, also having to undo the carb from the engine the threads can strip, which is a pain .

I don't know about gasoline in Canada. But no, just because it's 91 octane , doesn't mean it's 100% gasoline, it needs to say someone where on the pump
Sounds like a loose blade to me, A loose blade can cause a kick at the rope when you pull it. Your guess that it may have been the flywheel key is the usual cause though.
yes you are right, however, I was the one who put the blade on so it's not loose.
My gf picked up a craftsman with tecumseh mower in 2010, used for $50. She never checked the oil. I didn't have a mower so when we bought a house we just used hers. To date I have never changed the oil, ive never even checked it until yesterday. She never did either. So it's gone at least from 2010 until today without an oil change. And it doesn't even smoke.
Anyway this one doesn't have an oil dipstick, it has the older little twist cap near the bottom of the block. I will say the oil is as black as my coffee lol. Anyway how to tell what the correct level is? There is like a slot that seems like it could be used as an indicator but I might be wrong. So does anyone know?
I do have trouble starting it from time to time, it runs on prime then quits. I clean the little holes in the main jet and it's ok.
It's a beast, it just won't quit. And strangely even though I haven't sharpened the blade since we got it, it still cuts the grass with minimal tearing and busts through brush easily. Great mower.

@ yeah i dont have access to non ethanol unless i buy from big store i use fresh gas and everything its the gasket themself that disintegrate i got a pack of 12 Briggs and stratton carb bowl gaskets and those are the ones that disintigrated

I would fix that one up & yes,I grew up with people who couldn't be bothered fixing that one up so I got bored with them & moved on from them in life which is kind of why I studied at least 1 trade during & after high school because I got bored with the place & the people in it - they were too much like one of them who couldn't be bothered.
I mean,I've studied some automotive & the whole electrical trade course at tech which I got my certificate then got an apprenticeship to be an electrical fitter/mechanic which I found much more interesting than school & whoever was there.
It looks like that mower may have been stored vertically because the spark plug was totally fouled up & I gave my B&S lawnmower a re ring almost 2 years ago because the spark plug started fouling up like that.
There was about ,0.045" of ring clearance which was well over the 0.032" reject limit as specified by Briggs and Stratton,the new piston ring gap was 0.009" which was very tight & now the engine uses bugger all oil & the spark plug electrodes run grey !

Tecumseh engines work just fine; I don't get the hatred thing. As easy as any to work on, and easier than many.
I sure do miss the carb. bowl drain valves engines used to have. Easy to drain off the water and sediment.

I have no problems with a Tecumseh engine at all. I still have a mower with one on it. I've never had any problems working on it.

@@HomeGaragechannel It's an old Toro Personal Pace. Model 20031. It's not a bad mower to chase around the yard but it does have some power issues in long grass.
are you cutting more than an inch or grass? meaning is your grass, say 4 inches tall from the ground, but you have your mower set to cut to position 3, which is perhaps 2.5"? If so, your ending could be a bit down on power, but I think If you only cut an Inch at a time, the mower would have a better chance of not bogging down.
I would pass it up and leave the headache for the next guy.

Tecumseh engines are not so bad , I have fixed and used them for a long time . They seem to really like clean engine oil and fresh gas . they will not take as much abuse as a briggs will take and still run .

Tecumseh's get a bad rap but they are really very solid. Just look at how many are still being used more than a decade after the co. went under. Plus, there are still plenty of parts available online attesting to their longevity. Sure, the filter setup is kinda weak, but every engine has a quirk or two. Why are Tecumseh engines dreaded? I know nothing about them, other than that people seem to not like them. I have so far surmised that Tecumseh was a manufacturer/brand, like Briggs & Stratton and Kohler are.
I can't speak for Everyone but it's not as rewarding to work on them as a Briggs or a Kohler
had both B&S & Tecumseh on the same Snapper deck. Tecumseh was the only one that spit a rod out of the block, while mowing. I keep my oil level 'up' as best I can. But that engine let go. Twelve years is about what they last, Briggs or Tecumseh. But Briggs just start using too much oil, Tecumseh will 'snap' right there in the grass..... ??
Can't say I hate one, but I'm on my second B&S engine. Mower's middle aged at 37. : )
Heart Transplant. My Snapper deck is drilled to now accept either one as a 'donor'.
Be careful with this flywheel. It's obsolete from Tecumseh.

That has a horrible rod knock
I hate to say it, but I've heard worse. this is minor in my book.
What happened
I've had one throw a rod, and knock a hole in the side of the crankcase
I've found a mower, that had very little oil in it, But they must have kept using it, until it developed the worst rod knock I've ever heard.
was that on a push mower?
It has a tecumseh engine, never was a fan of that engine.
