  • I have the power! In this week's episode of Good Bad Flicks I look at how to adapt a cartoon into a live action film the right way. Masters of the Universe is a cool action sci-fi film that would be a good movie on its own, even without the tie in to the famous toy line.

    It's funny Dolph Lundgren considers this his low point, when Frank Langella has said that this was his favorite role to play.

      How was that his low point it wasnt like he was a big moviestar or anything.He could barely speak english his biggest role to date was in Rocky IV and he only said 3 words.Im not sayin ur lying its just funny he would say that

      The only other thing that Langella is popularly known for is that Dracula movie of his.

    • @TJ52359
      @TJ52359 6 лет назад +8

      IIRC Langella expressly stated he did it for his Kids, combined with the Freedom to 'ham it up' made it one of the more 'Fun' jobs he ever had...
      as to Lundgren I think it might have been a case of teaching him that he should have better picked his roles... the fact that he was so new, and suddenly the lead, on a troubled production (over budget, no 2nd unit, studio meddling) he might have felt more of the stress at the time...
      - MotU was only his 3rd film... and if you look a lot of his work after that (save Maybe Punisher '89 and Showdown in Little Tokyo) he switched to either Villains or Direct to Video 'gun porn'

    Not even a mention of the most important reason to watch this movie. Evilyn's arresting eyes. Meg Foster (has the most compelling eyes in Hollywood, okay Karen Black's eyes are also interesting) is super good in this film, and indeed, has some of the best lines. "I see only a human female, it must have been she who tipped the balance against you."

  • @squamish4244
    @squamish4244 3 года назад +5

    In the most recent release of the film, both Frank Langella and Dolph Lundgren expressed their appreciation for the movie. One unfortunate thing is that Langella, who was in top shape at the time, pushed for a big fight scene to be included and he and Lundgren worked on it for awhile only to have it end up a much shorter fight to cut costs at the end of filming.

Sure it's corny, and full of cheese, but it's entertaining..and to be honest this is the only exposure I had to He-Man..other than the annoying kids yelling his name at a birthday party in Ghostbusters II..I think this film actually does some things better than the show did..namely Skeletor..he is actually intimidating. Probably one of favorites growing up. At my local video store I remember the poster at my local video rental store with the review "The STAR WARS for the 80's !" Although I'm glad that sequel didn't go through looking at MacGruder there who would've replaced Lundgren. They also used sets from Cannon's never made SPIDER-MAN along with the never made MASTERS sequel to get CYBORG made. I had read elsewhere Lundgren was early at one point supposed to do the sequel. And co-star with Jean Claude Van Damn was also to have a role in the project to boot. The two were friends ,and had always wanted to collaborate on a project together. It never happened until UNIVERSAL SOLDIER though.

    Interesting side fact, He-Man was inspired by Robert E. Howard's (creator of Conan the Barbarian fame) original barbarian hero Kull the Conqueror, this included both the main villain Skeletor who was based of Kull's somewhat re-occurring enemy (until he killed him anyhow) necromancer Thulsa Doom who's head like Skeletor was a skull (a version of this villain made it into the Conan the Barbarian movie played by James Earl Jones but sadly without the Skeletor skull-face :) ). They also drew on the idea of a previous snake people of the evil snake god Set that ruled the world prior to humans (or Eternians I guess in He-Man world) which can re-appear as a current threat (and constantly shown with Skeletor's base as Snake Mountain) particularly in the He-Man reboot series of the 2000's.
    Of course the He-Man series added the futuristic elements and was kid orientated unlike the pulp fiction Kull stories which had allot more violence and some nudity (though much less then the later Conan stories, Kull being written as a character who unlike his successor was uninterested in sex, but only battle, He was also somewhat more intellectually curious then Conan, but it was with the Conan stories that Howard really struck a cord with the pulp magazine audience).

      They were in the same universe and time period. Conan also had Thulsa Doom for a villain, in the novels, and sometimes the comic zine.

      No. Kull and Conan did share the same universe, but NOT the same time-period. Kull, an exile of Atlantis and king of Valusia, existed in a continent and kingdom that was at least a thousand years BEFORE the Hyborian world of Conan. Kull was one of Conan's predecessors and, as I recall from the original Robert E. Howard stories, was MENTIONED in Conan AND in one of the stories of Solomon Kane - AND he made an appearance in one of the stories of Bran Mak Morn. Thulsa Doom appeared in the Conan comics, from the old Marvel series of the 1980's, where he had served as an uneasy anti-hero ally to Conan and Red Sonja. In the original REH stories, he only appeared in ONE story of Kull - but, he DID have a skull-like face.

      He is certainly the best thing about the movie. Frank Langella's performance was (for a movie of this level) stelar as Skeletor. Anyone ever thinking of replaying the role should learn from him. And the makeup was great. Sometimes he really looked as if his face was a skull made of flesh, if that makes any sense.

      Budget reasons, primarily; in fact, the budget was so low Gary Goddard literally had to pay to film the finale out of his own pocket because the studio refused to give him any more money.

      @Jack Storm true but Kevin Sorbo was known from the Hercules tv show, Xena was popular and Krull was supposed to be a Conan sequel.
