American here. Theres a builder here on RUclips called Nivlac57, which put a 4.2L Vortec inline 6 engine in a 5th gen Camaro, added a turbo, and is making 1000whp. He is looking into making an adapter plate to mate a 8HP70 to the 4.2 I6. It seems that MaxxECU will be the way to go...

You realize that guys are running 7s and 8s in the 1/4 with Powerglides, TH400s and 4L80e when they have enough power, the right converter and gears? How fast are you expecting to run? At least when it comes to turbo LS stuff. A kid ran 7s in a New Edge Mustang with an unopened gen IV 4.8L, the 243 heads stayed on, he did and cam and a valve spring kit. He used a lightly modded 4L80e and a very serious converter which is likely much easier to find, buy, control and adapt if necessary than a rwd high Tq ZF8. If I was going to step outside the GM.boxes and use a Ford engine, I would use a 6R140 with a turbo 6.8L or 7.3L Godzilla from a box van. The 6R140 cam in Ford "modular" bolt pattern behind rhe 6.2L SOHC V8 from 2010 on and handles over 1,000ft/lbs from very low rpms from built 6.7L diesels, living behind a turbo gas engine should be a cake walk for one. Most of the ZF8s are the lower tq rated units from behind turbo I4s and V6s. I suppose things are just a lot different in Australia with parts avaliability, prices and willingness to gamble.

Couple of points. You can’t compare a “$16,000” 6HP build to the installation of a used 8HP, one will be capable of running a 7 second pass the other might need rebuilding soon after you buy it… and building an 8HP to handle the same power will cost you $20k, Pure charge $6000 USD for a basic build through to $15,000 for a stage 3 Compare this to a FULLY built 6R80 in the USA which is less and has run 7.26 @ 194mph as a 6 speed or 6.76 @ 208mph as a 3 speed with overdrive delete. Back here in Australia the 6HP26 has run 7 second passes in a full weight (almost 4000lb) FG sedan. A 6R80 input shaft, billet planetary and quality build will be less than $16,000 and will handle whatever people can throw at it. The 8HP is very cool but make sure you stick to comparing apples to apples

There’s quite a lot of cars with that kind of power using 8HP70 boxes. Weight of the car and how you drive is obviously a big factor. My thinking (and what I’ve experienced) is that the ZF8 is so much faster given its newer superior technology, that there’s just no need to chase high HP (even though it can handle a LOT stock) It can make lower HP cars go way faster than something with 1000hp and a t400.
best ones aren't unreliable, just too expensive that you do think twice before buying the best one, Monstatorque is running 7's with their full weight shop car they are warrantying it too so should be interesting. gotta pay to play though.
The actual advantages of the ZF8 are pretty massive against a 4-speed, but the 6HP variants (6L/R80) are very well scienced out at this point as well, and they don't give up much vs the 8HP. I dunno. They make a good street car transmission, and potentially a good "fun car" trans, but it remains to be seen if they'll get adapted to hold to the abuse of drag applications like ye olde 4L80E. Probably not, because by the time you're at 4L80E or TH400 power levels in a drag application, you're abusing the torque converter on every shift and letting it make up for the relatively wide spread.
Great video, this is been going on now for about 2 years.. as you mentioned the worst hurdle was the proprietary TCU that was in the zf.. i believe the Turbolamik is by far a better choice..we are about to install the ZF 8 into my sons Jag v-12, xjs.. and we have a Maxx ecu in the jag.. will be interesting..
I hear ya- BUT I suspect a well sorted Powerglide would be just as fast down the 1/4- although on the street rhere'd be no comparison. I've got a big HP RB30 powerwd R31 with a big dollar Trimatic behind it. It was the worst decision I ever made (besides fitting a Microtech 12C ECU 15 yrs ago 🤦🤣). I've had constant problems with breaking hard parts where there aren't any aftermarket options for upgrade. Yes it's a physically light box and it's relatively efficient and doesn't absorb a lot of power like a TH400 does- BUT it's come at the price of reliability. No doubt the car is faster (off the footbrake- can't trans brake it if I'm blowing it up launching off the foot brake) with this particular Trimatic compared to a TH400- but then again I could launch with more boost AND use a trans brake which would more than make up for whatever power you lose at the wheels with the TH400. But I'm talking about $7,000 - $8,000 built boxes. Hi Stalls level the playing field with these boxes with lots more gears. Yes, technically they keep you in the power band but when a torque converter is operating with slip it's actually a torque multiplier. That's lart of the rwadon Powerglides work so well it a drag application... I'd rather a TH400 and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit replacing the factory extension housing... It'd be much more reliable in extreme operation usage with big HP builds
This was inevitable. Manufacturers were putting that shxt on everything like hot sauce lol. All the germans except Benz and almost all the muscle Americans have sone variant of 8HP
The 8 speed is a great box with great tech, but saying they are faster then a 3 speed is a very naive statement. If they make a car faster then why does all the promod boys who run 5sec 200+mph run either 3 speed TH400's and 2 speed Th400's? A 3 or 2 speed with the right converter and right gear set will always be faster then 6 ,8 or 10 speeds.
The things you’re comparing aren’t really comparable, the TH400’s and glides in those cars are super expensive and built strictly for racing. Also, the engines in those cars have the torque to make up for the difference between ratios. If you compare the stock ZF8 to a TH400 built to take the same power and you put both in the same car the 8 would be quicker, faster, and more fuel efficient. The ZF may be more expensive but that’s kind of based on where you get both transmissions and ultimately value is up to the individual. I’m definitely interested in the 8HP for street/strip builds because highway speeds in a 2-3 speed is terrible.
Naive, naive is you comparing lets say 750kw/1000nm vs a 5500hp+ promod ...... Not all pro mods run a 2,3 speed a few pro mods running 5 &7 speed air shift liberty's
Dream build is an alloy block Boss 5.4 or Barra turbo with a ZF 8 speed. ZF is lighter than the ZF 6 speed. I'd move the battery to the boot and reconfigure the rear end suspension to handle some wider rear tyres. Suspension wise just an adjustable front sway bar. So you'd have a lighter front end and the FG would be lighter on its feet.
There were aluminum block 5.4 and 5.8L DOHC sold in GT500s, I wouldn't waste my money or time. A 6.8 or 7.3 Godzilla is significantly better and I would run a 6R140 modular bolt pattern with internals used to survive behind a full tilt 6.7L diesel.
Then it's not running a Turbo-lamik TCM , as you can tune Violent Shifts in them , throw in Raybestos Fibre GPZ-018 clutches and the Raybestos STMZ-019 Steel clutches for insane power .
Hahaha this guy obviously doesn't understand there's more to it, look up what happened when Brett LaSala or anyone else swap from a factory style trans like a 6R etc and go 'Glide or TH400 lol they all went quicker
@@fgmods To be fair my thoughts are the 8hp is better for most all rounder cars but I wouldn't be surprised if the old drag transmissions are still at the top for drag, I'm keen af on an 8hp swap, always need a manual though which means another car & bigger garage, cars are expensive lol
about to? brother youre literally 4 years late on this video lol. weve been sticking these gearboxes behind 1500+hp engines for a good while. people laughed, now they dm us for parts.

Or just buy a ZF from Monsta Torque for 9k that comes with a converter and it will be better. Zf8 is cool tho. If they can get it to be more of a bolt in package it will be good.
I give it 6 months and big ZF6 builders like monsta torque will be providing ZF8 options. In fact I’ve already seen a couple of known names say on their FB etc that they’re working on ZF8 build options.
Fixed heaps of these in vw's and jeeps. Unless it's the ZF8H90, forget it. Buckets of shit. You're on the money with the 6R80. Stangs do really well with stock boxes.
Lol the th400 ain't old news, there's a reason it's the king. I think you'd have a hard time telling all the 7, 8 and 9 second street cars that 8 speeds is better than 3😂
@@fgmods Thing is at the power levels of a 7s or better car, you don't need all the gears, you already have more power/torque than you can put down in those few gears.

My thinking (and what I’ve experienced) is that the ZF8 is so much faster given its newer superior technology, that there’s just no need to chase high HP (even though it can handle a LOT stock) It can make lower HP cars go way faster than something with 1000hp and a t400.
8hp are in 7 second cars. So they hold 1300hp in Australia or 1500hp in USA.
best ones aren't unreliable, just too expensive that you do think twice before buying the best one, Monstatorque is running 7's with their full weight shop car they are warrantying it too so should be interesting. gotta pay to play though.
Rvo has 1500hp zf6 speeds
@@blrn54 haha nice
Great video
Great video, this is been going on now for about 2 years.. as you mentioned the worst hurdle was the proprietary TCU that was in the zf.. i believe the Turbolamik is by far a better choice..we are about to install the ZF 8 into my sons Jag v-12, xjs.. and we have a Maxx ecu in the jag.. will be interesting..
I would like to put 1 of these z8 into my toyota aristo jzs161
same. their prices have skyrocketed though, and becoming unobtanium
When’s the Barra swapped Hilux back ?
Big things are happening with it right now.
So hopefully another episode of the build will be out in a few weeks.
Amg e55 gbox is a powa house 1000nm capable from factory
rated 260nm seems wrong on 6 speed
maybe pound feet?
au made 354nm at the flywheel 25 years ago
Also powere the hellcats and demons etc
Can we find a GM version in the states
For a LS , Blueprint has just started fitting the 8hp to LS motors and it's available through them 🎉
Na falcon has the 6hp21, less clutches, Smaller intermediate shaft
6HP21 was used in some later model MK2’s and FGX, but the NA falcons before that used a 6HP26, just with fewer clutches and smaller torque converter.
This was inevitable. Manufacturers were putting that shxt on everything like hot sauce lol. All the germans except Benz and almost all the muscle Americans have sone variant of 8HP
Rich people will use the zf8, 10k rebuild to handle power...
It's about the same price for a top th400 rebuild / Upgrade plus including Sonnax race parts plus extra for Reid case
People don't daily drive 6 sec drag cars, bud.....
@@jamesgeorge4874 To be fair he's right, but yeah most are no where near that level, 8hp definitely better for most streeters
Stating “always” is absolutely incorrect! You don’t understand area under the torque curve in different rpm ranges!
Naive,naive is you comparing lets say 750kw/1000nm vs a 5500hp+ promod ......
Not all pro mods run a 2,3 speed a few pro mods running 5 &7 speed air shift liberty's
If only it was a standard.
Isn't an alloy block 5.4 a coyote?
There were aluminum block 5.4 and 5.8L DOHC sold in GT500s, I wouldn't waste my money or time. A 6.8 or 7.3 Godzilla is significantly better and I would run a 6R140 modular bolt pattern with internals used to survive behind a full tilt 6.7L diesel.
@@hendo337 5.4 iron block has plenty of potential. Gap Sauce on RUclips has got his BA GT to run an 11.8 second Qtr mile.
Or for a fraction of the cost you can go a 80 year old gm design with 3 speeds thats no slower.....
Still sounds like it's cheaper to buy a bulletproof 4l80
WAAY cheaper from the sound of it yes.
The th400
TH400 will be around for another 20 years +
I was expecting 10l90
10 speeds are taking over not 8
the 8hp90 in a hellcat is way better
'Zed' F8 . . .
48re mike drop
Cool vid dude, cheapest solution teach your falcon ecu to speak German problem solved
ECU: Shift you swine, trans: nein lol
ruclips.net/video/gZZtt_cnvyE/видео.htmlsi=SkGHaRfafJFCiDF2
This rotary is running one.
Seems like it will great.
nah its slow to change gear i dont like it ..
Let’s check back in 12 to 24 months and see how confident you are in t400 superiority then.
I’m talking about using them in Falcons, there’s like 2 in all of Aus
Eww gross! Its an automatic!
This video is pretty late to the game
It's well ahead of all the Falcon owners and shops who are only just catching up now. There's only 2 ZF8 swapped Falcon's so far.
I've been talking about this for years already. It's just now Falcon owners are finally taking it seriously... After the rest of the car world has already been doing it.
I think you'd have a hard time telling all the 7, 8 and 9 second street cars that 8 speeds is better than 3😂
It’s not even a hard argument to make. I did it in the video. Showed how the cost is similar for a much faster car by using 8speed
@@fgmods Thing is at the power levels of a 7s or better car, you don't need all the gears, you already have more power/torque than you can put down in those few gears.
@@fgmods”Faster” where? A lot of 2 speed (power glide) cars in the USA that’d beg to disagree! Tons of T400’s disagreeing too! 😂 Hell….top fuel is one speed. Bottom line, with enough power, less shifting is actually faster than more shifting.
T400 will hold 5,000hp no barra comes close 😂
New flash 6 cylinder sux.. barra is just a cross flow 😂 v8 are for men
