    I’m 3 years late commenting here. Thank you for filming this beautiful gem!! What an absolutely beautiful mall. The wood panel ceilings, the wooden columns, the architecture & design make up for an absolutely beautiful mall. Just love the aesthetics of this mall. I’m a bit disappointed how this mall is closing this weekend. This mall will be closing its doors for good today on 4-21-24. Just so sad to see such an amazing looking structure die and will be demolished soon for redevelopment. I wish they could keep some of the architecture for the planned redevelopment. The previous owners did not come up with a plan to revive this dying mall since they took over in 2019. I’m so sad about this. Wish there was an active save Stratford Square Mall effort before it was too late. This was by far one of the most beautiful malls I’ve seen on the internet. Thank you again for taking the time to document this mall. Just subscribed to your channel. And a belated congratulations on your marriage and hoping to enjoy more upcoming videos from you.

    The crazy part about the design of this mall is that a lot of malls are currently being renovated with similar wood panels. Great job as always Jack!

    This mall at one point had both an EB Games and Gamestop at the same time, it was one of the last U.S. stores to have in EB Games (if not the last). The EB games was still there in 2009 and I believe closed in 2010 or 2011.
    The ceiling at the Mall's center court is still one of the most beautiful I've seen in a mall. I'm glad RUclipsrs have documented this, because I think Stratford may get torn down in the next few years. I grew up with the mall and remember when it was still a high end mall in the late 80s and 90s.

      I agree. Such beautiful aesthetics in this mall. The wooden panels on the ceilings, nothing like them. The Greek like columns, just so beautiful. So sad to hear of its closing today on 4-21-24.

    This is my local mall, I have lots of memories here, it is really said to see what has happened in a week I saw for places closed and the arcade is closing. I wish this place will turn around but it most likely will not. There was a rumor that Simon was going to purchase this mall once JCPenney closed, I wish that actually happened and it might have made it more thriving. If you want more info about some inside stuff. (We were a friend of a old art gallery owner) so I have some other info. There used to be a step fountain in front of fye and they got rid of that then there was another fountain and I have a updated video from right before COVID. I am going to make a update video since I was just there and saw how much worse it is.

    This opened 3 months after I was born and was the mall the family went to when I was growing up, so I always remember it as being something that was just a part of life. I remember when they used to have trees, and when they changed the shoebox theatres to modern theatres. I was 10 when Charlestown was built, so I remember that as the 'new' mall, never quite as good as Stratford or Fox Valley, but not bad. In the early 2000s I worked a job at Woodfield.
    A few years before I left Illinois, Charlestown basically died and Stratford was dying. I think Fox Valley and Woodfield are still doing allright, yeah?

    • @HistoryandWhiskey
      @HistoryandWhiskey 2 года назад +1

      Woodfield still going strong. Fox valley has a slight dip than what it once was. Charlestown is just the movie theater. Maybe one store but that's it.

      @turtleislandlac1490 2 года назад

      I remember at one point when Charlestowne actually had 3 bookstores. And had a movie memorabilia store and a sports memorabilia store. It was a good mall for guys, usually malls cater more to women.

    I know almost every square inch of this mall. Been going here since high school in the 80s.
    So many movies like “Blade Runner,” David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” and “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure”
    As teenagers we would cruise up and down the mall looking for girls. Grabbing a bite at the food court and meeting up just before going to a big party.
    Dozens of Christmas Eves were spent here shopping for family and friends. Christmas shopping was I was so busy and stifling hot, no matter how cold it was outside.
    It’s sad to see it go. But among the locals, I swear it’s been on the horizon for well over a decade. It never quite garnered the kind of traffic that Woodfield Mall garnered. (it’s main competitor) end, it never could secure what kind of stores that Woodfield could anchor.

    I was here the 1st day it opened and worked there in earlot 90s at the athlete's foot (shoe store). My sister worked at the candy jar store mid 90s. Steve and Barry's was awesome. No one knew how they sold so much college apparel for cheap. They were scammers and forced into bankruptcy and arrested. Great mall back in the day!

    With the way how technology has progressed over the past 15 to 20 years, people are getting more comfortable with ordering off the internet rather than going to the store. The only way people would ever go to the store is to return an item that they ordered off the internet. Plus to remodel a mall is a huge undertaking and that could affect the stores inside the mall to a point where prices might go up a little. Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL went through a remodeling phase about 2 or 3 years ago and it looks a lot better or more modern. Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, IL just completed their remodeling but yet it still feels like nothing has changed. Soon malls are going to be a thing of the past.

    Actually JCPenney closed in April of 2014.this I believe is what led to a beginning of a persistent domino effect throughout Stratford Square in a matter of time unfortunately.Arby’s was next then Waldenbooks and Waldenkids.and Abercrombie and Fitch due to Feldman charging higher rent to this particular tenant.as well as others I believe causing a loss of foot traffic and teenagers to this property and then the Disney Store and the next stage was the closing of Macy’s in Spring of 2017.

    This mall still has good bones. Newish flooring, etc. Too bad they can't turn it into an indoor mega-entertainment meca.
    Reopen the movie theater and bowling ally. Add bars, resturants, nightclubs, mini-golf, lazer tag, recording studios, axe throwing, etc etc. Have a jazz bar, country bar, rock bar, etc.
    Center stage for entertainment ala Vegas or Nashville.
    Offer all new residents free rent for 1-2 years until it finds it's feet.... or crashes and burns.

      Well said.so many memories of Christmas past .it doesn’t get any easier to see old friends fade away like this..next March Stratford Square turns 40.i do believe life begins at 40.it maybe time to simply try something new.the village of bloomingdale has stopped tax money from going to Namdar Realty until they present a plan to improve this property.if someone or something is important to you then invest into what has been given.if not its time for something new.i would put Stratford at 28%occupancy as of December 2020.and the closing of the entrance of Kohls due to coronavirus concerns won’t help matters either.hope is all that remains.just hope.just hope for something better in the near future.

      @@Retailpocalypse I revisited here, earlier this month. In the storefronts and food court it's down to 24 stores left, and 2 kiosks. I visited on a Sunday, so not all of them were open.
      But if I saw evidence peering into a storefront that a business appeared to be operational, I counted that place as open. Hot Topic and Red Robin recently left, and Burlington will move in early 2023 to a strip mall just west of here(in part of a former Kmart). I'm pretty darn sure the only reason Finish Line remains open at Stratford, is due to spillover business from Burlington shoppers walking through the inside mall entrance.
      I was EVEN more shocked Foot Locker remained open, in the old JCPenney wing. Proof shoe stores never bail from a mall, till the ABSOLUTE end. Also 3 other mom and pop stores remained open, including a wrestling studio with limited hours in the JCPenney wing. Finally had a bizarro experience walking into Lids and then out, and then lol didn't see a single employee inside that store despite it being open! Reason you ask, is because I was trying to ask an employee how long ago Hot Topic closed. I finally got an answer, walking into the axe throwing place. Go figure....

    IMO, this mall has two options.
    First option, reopen Cinemark and Round1.
    Second option, just close it altogether and put it out of its misery already.
    I literally have no plans to go back there in the foreseeable future. For now, I’ll just go to the Fox Valley, North Riverside, and Woodfield malls.

    Namdar has further allowed Stratford to decline.it didn’t have to be this way.the first important clue was the April 2014 closure of the JCPenney.that I believe was the beginning of major change at Stratford Square.it still had 3 more years before the March 2017 closure of Macy’s.something I strongly feel should have been done with a little more urgency to try to save the mall.but like I stated before the recent closure of the century theater could be that nail in the coffin.
