  • Original footage of Alcatraz from the University of South Carolina Archives. These scenes were all filmed in August of 1934 only days before opening in 1934. There are various important scenes including footage of Officer Royal Cline patrolling the catwalks of the Alcatraz Road Tower and the main cellhouse exterior. The exterior cellhouse catwalk was located outside the Mess Hall and visible as he paces is the switch box that controlled the tear gas canisters inside the dining area. Cline was murdered during the violent Alcatraz escape attempt which took place on May 23, 1938. While at work in the model industries building, Thomas Limerick, Jimmy Lucas, and Rufus Franklin attacked Cline with a hammer and later died from his injuries. The three then climbed to the roof in an attempt to disarm the correctional officer in the roof tower. The officer, Harold Stites, shot Limerick and Franklin. Limerick died from his injuries. Lucas and Franklin received life sentences for Cline's murder.
The footage is from Fox Movietone News Reels. Additional footage in the early segment shows Attorney General Homer S. Cummings inspecting the federal prison in anticipation of its opening. Scenes include aerial views of the island, interior of the prison cells, prison guards being inspected by Cummings, along with Warden James A. Johnston.

For as long as i can remember Alcatraz has been on my mind. About 25 years ago i did an essay about Alcatraz and got top marks for it's details, and my tacher learned some new things she didn't even know. Since then i have always had a place in my mind for Alcatraz and it's mysteries. But that speech in the end is new to me... Thank you very much for this video!

If you have the chance, go to Alcatraz. The history of this place is something that you can feel everywhere you walk.

Love the picture next to your comments. Been to San Francisco twice, June 2017 and January 2020. 2020 is when I got to go to Alcatraz.

Alcatraz history, Thanks for this great footage of the start of Alcatraz. Before WW2 started even ! I guess the Island rocky prison approved by President Franklin D Roosevelt. Not to mention FBI head J. Edgar Hoover. At 8:25 The Warden James Johnston (1874-1954) was the first and longest term Warden in Alcatraz (1934-1948). Old saltwater was his Nickname !
Plus at 3:26 the guard walking back and forth like that could get awful tedious it seems. But like everybody else he has a job to do ! Wow ! at 5:38 look how rough the Alcatraz Sea Water is !
Lastly Depression era Gangster's Al Capone who would arrive in Alcatraz in August , 22,1934 and Machine gun Kelly would arrive in Alcatraz in September4, 1934. Would be some of the first criminals to arrive there. Alvin "Creepy " Karpis would arrive in Alcatraz in 1936 and stay all the way to 1962 near the closing of it. Thank's for the fascinating upload. This video should have WAY more views !

My wife and I just went to alcatraz last week and something about that place is wanting me back. I keep having thoughts of needing answers from those who died their and I feel and believe they want me back to tell me what they need to say. I'm not a skeptical person when it comes to spirits getting attached to humans and I feel I was attached to. My dreams and thoughts are nothing but past memories of the one who got into my mind and attached it's spirit to mine
