Heh, I can second that notion myself. :P (Doubly so with the likely fear that our future payment outcome will still be screwed over in the near future somehow.)
They are following Arthur Blank's model at Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta in which the most popular items were set set at no more than $5 and they immediately made more money than when the prices were jacked up.
I remember $100 got you 4 tickets to the Saddledome nosebleeds, 4 hotdogs, 4 popcorns, 4 sodas, 4 pennants, and 4 ice creams to see a Calgary Flames game WAY back!!!! The good ol’ days! BTW Saddledome has the best sight lines still!
Don’t forget Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club did it first this season at Delta Center with the Mountain Menu $2 and $3 items, popcorn, hotdogs, water bottles, nachos, ice cream. And they introduced a reusable Stanley mug you can bring and refill for $3
Arizona Diamondbacks had a Value Menu for years with a more affordable option. It is possible the Phoenix Suns is trying the same idea the Arizona Diamondbacks implemented. The value menu at all home Arizona Diamondbacks games are $2.99 with a choice of a hot dog, corn dog, popcorn, or a 16 ounce soda. Arizona Diamondbacks did have a $4 beer that was discontinued.
Atlanta United & the Atlanta Falcons did this first back in 2017 and called it "Fan First Pricing". I had expected it to send shockwaves through concession stands at American sports events, but that never happened. I'm glad the Suns are doing this as it definitely makes someone more likely to attend a game.
The Utah Hockey Club has a value menu for food also. Saw that last night during the Avs vs Hockey Club game. I believe they also sell $2 hot dogs, water, ice cream etc.
Mercedes Benz Stadium has had $2 hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks (which used to have free refills) since opening. Bunch of other items are $3 plus they have $5 beer.
I can commend the Suns or the arena (not sure if they are the same entity or not) for this. The trend seems to have started with with the Utah Hockey Club and I hope it continues to spread. When I take my family to Devils games, I intentionally plan my meals outside of the arena - not only is arena food ridiculously expensive, but quite frankly, it’s lousy. The Devils once had a $1 hotdog cart that roamed the concourse of the Brendan Byrne Arena (you needed to find them and hope they hadn’t sold out) but those days are long gone. I do wonder if the Footprint Center operates its own concessions or outsources them. With companies such as Aramark and Levy running many venue concessions, all venues may not have this option.
Hi brodie I like your videos. You did a video on the Phoenix sun's and there food cost. Ryan Smith owner of the utah jazz and utah hockey club did the same thing with pricing way before the sun's
I’m lucky enough to, in the course of my business to go to sporting events across the country, and sometimes get to bring my family along and, real talk in most venues the concessions are just as if not more expensive than the tickets themselves. Because I work for a nonprofit, buying alcohol or consuming alcohol with a client/prospect/donor is a strict no go, so it’s not like I’m running up a tab with booze, but yeah bottlers water is literally sold at airport prices which is unconscionable, $8 for a 1 liter that wholesales for less than $1! I was invited to a Chargers game at SoFi and 4 sodas, 2 sandwiches, 1 loaded tots, and a nacho bowl with popcorn, and 2 bags of candy were almost $250 for my family of 4, I mean we could’ve had dinner in Restaurant Row in Beverly Hills for the about the same amount of money.
Arthur Blank has done something like this at Mercedes Benz stadium, but I think he did it across the board, I know he said it's the most affordable in the NFL. I'm pretty sure nothing is $2, but I'm not sure, haven't looked at the menu in a bit.
I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the Lakers and Celtics average prices!! $596? I haven't been to a Celtics game in Boston since...2007? We were 7 rows from the Celtics bench, and the ticket price was $125. WOW! Lakers are at $702 on average. I saw the Celtics play the Lakers in the Staples Center back in 2003. My ticket was maybe $45, but it was in the upper deck. Guess I need a new income....HAHa. The $2 menu items, LOVE IT! Not sure it should be ALL concessions, but LOVE that even more! Just WOW again on the ticket prices!!
@@itsnotme07 it's out pricing the average fan. Would see the Dubs for years, rarely spending over $50 a pop. Last game for us was in 2018 in Oakland, , corner seats 2/3rds up first bowl for $110. Similar seats in SF are $350+ Can't do it anymore. Will stay home and watch.
Wizards at Lakers, January 21, 2 tickets in the upper deck currently available for $156 total including fees. That stated "average" ticket price is the mean not the median.
@@selanryn5849 used to get Tix with little to no fees. Late 90s when the Warriors were horrible, my wife got half pricel tix for $11 through her job at Safeway. Good seats in the lowest row in the upper bowl. Her previous job at Uhaul in 1989, we got A's playoff and WS tickets, list price of $35 and $50. Great seats in 2nd deck, home plate. I miss the good old days!
With the cavs you can find nosebleed seats for under 30 bucks at many of the games in Cleveland. Of course the parking by the arena is expensive, but there are cheaper lots elsewhere in downtown Cleveland, concessions are expensive from what I've heard, and I get that if you have a family everything is more expensive.
wish madison square garden would do a similar deal for $5 but dolan loves money and hates the fans. the dasani used to cost more than the fountain drink because the dasani is delivered in pallets in plastic bottles while paper cups can be easily stacked in a cupboard
It costs $1300 roughly for a family of four to attend a Suns game based on the average ticket price shown. At that point, I dont see what difference it makes if they spend $20 or $100 on concessions. Nobody with shallow pockets is taking their family to the game at those prices.
As a Suns fan I am all for this. Maybe the encourages people to go to more games? Either way, it’s great to see the newer owners of the league put an emphasis on the fan experience. Look at the Clippers new arena, it’s all about the fan experience
Hey Brodie, congrats on the sharks job! I hope you continue to cover the A’s throughout the next few years as they continue on their journey to possibly Las Vegas or to stay in California or maybe even Portland who knows.
Vancouver Whitecaps have a $5 (cad) menu. Hot dog, beer, popcorn, nachos. They have it at 2 concession stands and even though it has long lines it makes a good difference for a lot of fans.
I think the value menu is a pretty awesome, especially with how much most tickets and parking costs. I think the hot dogs could be a bit bigger but it's something.
Jimmy from Chicago….All major sports teams should do some similar cutting….Ticket prices for the average fan middle income… ….Way too high….I just can’t go…..but honestly….I really don’t miss going anymore….Besides prices….Too many headaches… love your show…Brodie!….😊😊😊
the Mariner's have had $3 items for almost 10 years now and change things up every year, they also started $5 beers not that long ago (maybe 2021 right after the pandemic). Sure, it's a 12oz. beer and a limited selection, but still you can get a hotdog, popcorn, red rope, and a beer for under $15.
Trust me they are not losing money on a $2 hot dog, it just highlights the former outrageous mark-up. And saying these aren't the most nutritious options, how dare you. No one wants to attend a game and be hectored by the food police.
SEG and Ryan Smith started their value menu with the hockey club. It’s great they’re doing this but there is already a precedent with other teams as well…and btw- there is no loss taken. These items cost the arena pennies
I know others have already mentioned it, but I’ve been to games at 28/30 NFL Venues, the Falcons stadium is legit the best by a mile because of food prices.
You can get two upper deck tickets to next Saturday's game for $17 each. This is all about filling the arena and creating an atmosphere, with the added benefit of making it affordable for fans. Nobody wants to pay $1500 to sit court side in an empty arena. Ishbia also wants to create the largest base of fans he can, you never know when someone will one day be able to afford the higher end items, another good example of this is his Over the Air TV deal.
I don’t think any of these are at a loss tbh. We’re all just used to be price gauged at games. I doubt they’re paying anywhere close to even half that per item on their wholesale purchases. No idea how labor factors into this or if it even does, however. Love this idea though
The water and the coke are making a profit if you just bought it off the shelf at Wal-Mart. When you’ve buying millions of bottles of year directly from Coke, I’ve got to think the profit is even better.
4:30: I have been to one sporting event in the last 30 years. I moved to North Carolina in 2016 and a year or two later decided to attend my first hockey game at the Carolina Hurricanes. A corner seat 12 rows back from the ice cost $125. With parking and a hamburger, soda and fries, the night ended up costing me $175. No thanks Never again.
It allows ticketholders that already barely afford tickets, to participate in more of the fan experience. Overall, creates a more memorable time for fans.
Doesn't have to - Bruins fans will pay the regular (i.e., expensive) ticket prices, food, beer, etc. Leafs, Rangers, Bruins, Canadiens just have to make the tickets available for sale, get the food ready, and open up the gates and their job is done.
@@michaelmarkowski204 I am a Bruins fan. I have to treat my bro (his 40th) to a matinee game at TD Garden (vs Golden Knights). 4 tickets in the lower bowl? $1.2k. The Knights are my Western team so I'll be cheering for every goal.
The Blue Jays have loonie dog nights every Tuesday. Also, while their standard food offerings are average prices and they have two value stands, they have a rather permissive outside food and beverage policy.
when will the tipping point be? Prices to go to any game are insane. $0 years ago if something was too expensive you just didnt buy it but we live in a time where even people with no money will buy whatever.
Comes out to $204 a case. Compared to $3.99 at my local ShopRite. Normally 3 for $10.99 on sale. And at an average price of $702 who’s going to Laker games? That’s insane.
Good for them this shows how some owners don’t have to be greedy and at least give the perception they care about the fans ..Can’t even imagine what concessions will be in the Las Vegas A’s new ballpark since Las Vegas has basically given the middle finger to the small money tourist and raised all their limits along with resort fees because casinos said they only want to deal with high rollers now .. Get ready for 40 dollar hotdogs and 60 dollar beers .
@ Shovels go in the ground in April , All the plans have been approved and loans guaranteed by Goldman Sachs and US bank are in place for 300 million along with 380’million of the peoples money who had no choice . Fisher and his family are putting up to one billion and are hoping to get more investors by selling 25% of the team although he’s asking way too much 500 million for a team who’s value is put at only 1.2 billion .There is little to no enthusiasm of them coming but they are coming ..
Those 2 dollar prices are probably at cost. This is great for the fans, especially those that can only afford the basic seats. Funny little point, the add shows a picture of an U.S. 2 dollar bill. If one tries to buy something with this bill they might have the cops checking them out as the vendor figure that the bill is counterfeit. It has happened many tines.😀
I can't see the A's doing this in Vegas. With a small capacity and a lot premium seating, they'll have high prices like the rest of the Strip. Oh, can't forget the high union wages for workers. Still want to see the $15 seats promised the Nevada politicians. More lies by this horrible organization.
Those ticket prices aren't really a good sampling because they are almost certainly calculating the mean rather than the median price. Courtside tix for a Lakers game are in their own stratosphere for price, which is why their average is so crazy high.
Prices are all relative. If you got a ticket for tonight’s Sacramento Kings game at the Lakers, it’s over $172 for a verified resale ticket. But of course the court side seats for fans like Jack Nicholson are super expensive too. Greater Los Angeles has over 18 million people and it’s one of the world’s richest cities, with a gross domestic product of $1.295 trillion. As one of the most successful sports teams in North America, they have the fan base to afford it. The Pacers have a game on New Year’s Eve, with a $25 standard ticket, to see Milwaukee visit. Makes that sound a lot more affordable. The same night, Phoenix hosts Memphis, for a verified resale ticket of $43. Anyway, the value menu pricing are traditional items for sporting events or going to a movie. It’s what people usually partake of; back in the 80s and 90s, it’s what I would have had at a AAA baseball game or a movie in the 2000s and 2010s (for many reasons including the pandemic and ticket costs I haven’t been to a movie since 2017). But yeah, I would have selected a hot dog or popcorn and a soda (plus a candy bar) to help me enjoy the game or movie with. I think it’s a good trend and I’d love to see every arena and stadium in North America do something similar to improve menu fans’ game day/game night experience. And you can bet the teams and venues can get discount prices for buying these from their vendors in bulk. I would have happily spent money at a game on the value menu while spending the saved money on a program.
I am 59. Can’t remember buying food or drink at game or concert. I enjoy my paid of cars, house and maxed out retirement contributions. Life is a trade-off.
Its not unique and they arent the first. Mercedes Benz Stadium did this when they opened. And they did it for everything. What the Falcons have found is that more fans come into the stadium earlier and buy more food since they dont feel the need to load up before the game. The dirty little secret with stadium concessions is that the concession ls are managed by a 3rd party vendor who bids on the concessions. Those vendors typically "bid" by offering a multi-million dollar check to the venue and then the vendor has to make that back on the profits at the concession stands. Thats a big reason (other than a captive audience) that conceasion prices are ao high. When the Falcons/M-B Stadium put out the concession bid, they made it known that they were not going to take that fee (kickback) and they wanted the prices to be reasonable. Its been a big hit with the fans. And, yes, ticket and parking are still outrageous, but at least you can eat and drink for a reasonable price.
When you cost it out, buying in bulk with accommodating vendors, they are probably paying $1 for a pack of 8 hot dogs, or the variation of a food service vendor package of 20 or 50 hot dogs. So let's say generously 50 hot dog wieners are $10 to purchase at cost, before you even buy the buns that's $90 profit. Cost it out with overhead, wages, the bun, condiments, that's two-thirds, so likely still making 30 bucks profit when they sell 50 hot dogs at 2 bucks each.
Math: $9 to $2 can't be the same % discount as $8.50 to $2 (9-2)/9*100=77.778 (8.5-2)/8.5*100=76.471 Eh, close enough. Good for them to discount food. Tickets are enough as it is.
I can’t think of any reason not to do this. A $19 beer is an outrage when these owners and players make as much as they do. (And FTR I don’t even drink beer.)
When I worked at a certain electronics store that no longer exists the computer was sold at a loss but the batteries at a 900% markup. This is the opposite model, but still following the loss leader concept
Brodie. Costco sells a bigger hot dog than any pro sports team & includes the fountain drink for $1.50. Doubt the Suns are losing any money charging $4.
@@WonkNRoll very true. I still don’t think charging $2 is a loss though. It’s just that we’re so used to being price gauged at pro games that it seems that way. None of those items typically retail for more than $2 and it’s not even close for most of them. Just my opinion though
@@mrwhirly0358 Whether or not the Suns are taking a loss, breaking even, or making small, mostly negligible profit is missing the larger point that the value menu is designed to entice more people coming out to the games to create loyal fans who come out to games for years to come. Additionally, the ownership hoping that in addition to that $2 dog they also buy some fancier food items and some high profit margin beers. Not to mention that higher attendance per game from people going because the value menu exists translates into a higher valuation for the franchise itself.
Good for PHX owner and fans. But those ticket prices for Today's unwatchable NBA is observed. The NBA need to move past commissioner Silver and find a modern day Stern.
The question is who is paying for this? The Suns DO NOT operate the concessions at the games. It is run by OVG Hospitality under a contract begun in 2023. I suspect the Suns are subsidizing this. OVG is still making money, if not the same then close to it compared to before. We will see if this long term. Other comments here seem to indicate this is not something new. Other teams have already done similar promotions.

$1.2k. The Knights are my Western team so I'll be cheering for every goal.
they makeup on beer sales.
The Blue Jays have loonie dog nights every Tuesday. Also, while their standard food offerings are average prices and they have two value stands, they have a rather permissive outside food and beverage policy.
Last Sunday I took 2 of my 3 kids to a Sacramento Kings game for $60 a ticket. Yes they were nose bleed tickets lol
Raptors currently have a $5 ticket menu for 600 level seats, or at least they should (7-24).
when will the tipping point be? Prices to go to any game are insane. $0 years ago if something was too expensive you just didnt buy it but we live in a time where even people with no money will buy whatever.
That's cheaper than the concessions at UT-Martin games.
That’s definitely more affordable for people who don’t want to spend a whole lot. I hope it goes well.
Mercedes-Benz stadium started the trend. Happy others are following suit. It’s great for all involved!
Look at Minnesota Twins Target Field and their Walleye on a Stick
$8.50 for a water!!??
Comes out to $204 a case. Compared to $3.99 at my local ShopRite. Normally 3 for $10.99 on sale.
And at an average price of $702 who’s going to Laker games?
That’s insane.
priced for people who think they are too good for water fountains.
I highly doubt A's ever even make it to Vegas
They make their money back somewhere. Keep an eye on those ticket prices and contracts for TV coverage to make up any difference.
Smart move - I bet they still make money on the soda - same with the chips and popcorn if they're just single serving sizes.
@@mike7050-u2d Could be. If you want the best "value", for sure go for 1-2 hot dogs and a bottle of Desani.
I believe Atlanta Falcons did the value deal first
Math:
$9 to $2 can't be the same % discount as $8.50 to $2
(9-2)/9*100=77.778
(8.5-2)/8.5*100=76.471
Eh, close enough.
Those are expensive. Deflate the prices. That's why they have the 2 dollars menu
"wasn't it subway that had the 5$ foot long" you know it was subway 😂 people who never ate subway in their life know they did the 5$ foot long
It's what is called a loss leader. Take a hit on this one item to draw people in to buy the other items.
Brodie. Costco sells a bigger hot dog than any pro sports team & includes the fountain drink for $1.50. Doubt the Suns are losing any money charging $4.
Costco loses money on those, it’s called a loss leader.
They also charge you at least $60 a year for the privilege of buying them
Good for PHX owner and fans.
Unhealthy food and beverage menu but at a lower price, so fans can consume even more of it.
I remember 10 beer night in Cleveland.
