I did it at several GM plants in Mich. before retiring. Everyone should have to do this job for a month before getting CDL. You have to get good at backing. 30-60 moves a day you have to get good.

I agree 100% being able to back is extremely important and doing yard jockey work helps a lot.

I do the same job at a pet food factory in Nebraska, and in some ways I think you've got it better than we do, but in other ways I don't!!
We don't deal with intermodal container trailers, but we do have to move tankers of liquid animal fat, and also move grain hopper(bottom dump) trailers. We only have about 40 dock doors to back van trailers into, (looks like you have many more than that!!) We are required to put a jackstand, gladhand lock, and wheel chock on every trailer we put into a dock,(and of course remove those items when pulling the trailer out of the dock). The trailer inspection is supposed to be done upon arrival by our guard shack personnel, so us yard drivers don't have to spend time doing that on every trailer we move.
Supposedly we are replacing our 3 diesel trucks with Orange EV electric ones within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Wow!!! I see what you mean. I would be nice to not have to pretrip every trailer I move. I thank you for sharing with me what you do...

Being a OTR truck driver i appreciate all the hard work yark jockeys do. My only complaint would be sometimes they spot the trailers so close that its difficult to raise the landing gear.

I haven’t been to any tight yards like that but I can only imagine squeeze in between trailers to raise the landing gear.

Either that or they lower the landing gear so much that the trailer is sitting a foot higher than the fifth wheel when you back under it.
