- Come on bord and get to know my good old KARL who is going to be my companion on the sea for some time from now on. I am still in the middle of his refit, but I thought I would give you a little tour so you get to know him better.
Find out more about my life with KARL on whitespotpirates. If you enjoy watching my documentary and therefore want to contribute a little bit for internet costs / video equipment, then you can do so here: www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr.... Thank you for your support!
I consider aluminum to be the ultimate material for extended cruising. I couldn't afford aluminum so I bought a Caroff designed Chatham 33, steel, pilothouse cutter. This awesome boat served as home for 7 years of cruising mostly in the high latitudes including a 3 year, 40,000 mile singlehanded circumnavigation. I loved the strength and security of steel while in the Southern ocean and cruising in the North Atlantic. You go girl, enjoy the cruising life, I know I did.
Thanks for the tour. I like your little floating home. Perfect for one person.
Best of Luck, and Smooth Sailing
Fantastic! Wishing you all the energy to get Karl fitted out and out across the ocean. You encourage me to "untie the lines" and get out there. Good for the soul.
wow its seems like alot of prep work.your doing a great job.thanks for sharing
I love your videos. I'm amazed at your willingness and courage to take on the Karl project. She certainly wasn't in the condition that was promised when you made your purchase. I'm so pleased that you remained steadfast in pursuit of your dream!!
I think you're awesome!! Everything you did in the beginning was a struggle for you. You endured setbacks with ever attempt to restore Karl. You're a very brave and determined woman. you're living out your dream..when most people would have given up. I'm impressed with your commitment to achieving your goals.
Also I will add that I think you're the most fantastic and beautiful woman I've seen. I adore your videos.. and to see such beautiful and magnificent woman doing things most people only dream of is the reason I love your videos.
Nike ... boy, you were a True Innocent in these early episodes ... so endearing ...
Thank you for your nice words. It's beautiful to hear that my experiences are inspiring others to try to go for their dreams.
I just found your posts a couple of days ago, love what you are doing. I'm working on doing the same thing in a couple of years. Keep the video's coming.
I'm really inspired by what you're doing. One of the jobs I have is substitute teacher. I show your stuff to the kids I teach so they can see what is possible. Your videos work because you are so confident and approachable, careful yet daring. I hope your journey goes well and that you are safe! One day I'll do what you're doing.
That's great to hear. Good luck with untieing the lines urself!
Such a good video
Come on board and take a look at my little KARL!!! He is a german built Reinke Super 10, made out of aluminum and he will be my home for the next...well, let's see for how long :)
What is the make and model of Karl? I'd like to look up his Specs, as I am trying to find my Blue Water Home. Thanks.
He is a Reinke Super 10, 11,20m long with twin keels. The hull is made from aluminium.
Thanks. Appreciate the info.

UNTIE THE LINES #3
Still looks like a nice boat.:)
there is mold killing paint, you should look into it . have fun and keep us posted. cheers on from the pacific northwest.
Jeah, he is a really stable boat. Very solid, that's what I love about him. He just needs some love and care because he has been neglected for such a long time. But he will be in good shape very soon :)!
Woo Hoo! Good job. Love your boat. I set my alarm to remind me to log on and watch this week. I'm viewer #42! Lol. Keep up the good work. Are you going to be living onboard until you set sail? I can see your very determined and I know you'll make Karl a beautiful home....
As long as you weld a frame around the inside of the hatch you're fine.
So often people call there boats by woman names. Karl is a very good name.
If you keep getting mold problems you could go on the WoodenBoat forum and ask what can be done. I think that mold spores can go deep in to wood. There may be an epoxy that can kill the spores. The mold may not be that big of a deal for you I don't know..
Any ways Having fun watching your videos. You stay safe and have fun!
is that Arizona ice tea you drink at the end? :O)
how long have you been sailing before taking on this adventure?
Just found these.Amazing and fresh and not vain .Probably married with kids now.wow six years ago.
Not last time I checked 😉
Found new vids. What a sailor. The story continues....absolute gem to find... And watch. Thanks for the share.Very addictive.I get seasick sometimes and I'm on land.
@@99thehighstreet69 hahaha, maybe too much rum ;P
i lived on a 28 ft bucaneer.. for two years
Mold is almost impossible to get rid of in your conditions once it starts. You are seeing it on the wood because it feeds on it. Moisture, warm temps are doing nothing but speeding up the process. You have to gut the wood inside out and paint it from all sides using a synthetic paint which the mold can't digest (they can actually digest most paints).

Oh, please no.
Old trick to kill the Mold is using acetic acid app. 5-10% by volume. Acetic acid, "vinegar", is also a great thing to wash sails etc.
@Chrisopher Young: for some reason I cannot answer directly on your post...but anyhow, Karl is a german construction, built by the plans of a man called Reinke. The model is a Reinke Super 10, made out of aluminium.
Hello, what part of Germany are you from? I live in Ensdorf.
Anybody know what kind of boat this is? Great videos!
Aargh, they're addictive! Must.ration.youtube!
guten morgen
You forgot to show the captains quarters... looks like a aft cabin design?
hehe, no, la capitana sleeps in the bow cabin :). The design is made for haveing two bunks in the aft cabin, that's right. But in Karl's case, it is "just" storage. It's a bit complicated, cause it is hard to reach stuff that is at the forward end of each "bunk"...but I am thinking of maybe somehow putting a hatch underneath the cockpit seats to have better access. But I don't know if that would weaken the structure of the boat...will have to do some research and talk to some people :).
Ahoy, Nike
Get continued ventilation. Mold and gas are killers.
How do you use the internet at sea or in an out of the way harbor ? Also BTW I think you are awesomely Beautiful .
Bravo! You are inspiring. Taking on the world on the ocean with KARL. Just started watching your show, and I'm hooked. Check out my sailing journey: Sailing Around Lake Geneva. Warming up to take on the sea next!
What harbor is that? I think I've been their.
Shelter Bay Marina close to Colón, Panama.
now on 34 ft searay
🌈❤️💪😎
The black mold is dangerous health wise, stachybotrys. Another is aspergillus among others, you got to get rid of all of it.
Ahha😂.
What marina is that?
Shelter Bay Marina in Colon, Panama
What company made Karl?
He’s a Reinke Super 10.
so...is it your friend/companion taking the video? Did I miss something?
Parts of this video are taken by a friend that came to visit me for some weeks. You see him in one of the refit videos. But usually, I do the filming by myself...well, mostly the camera does it because it just sits / hangs somewhere and films :).
What kind of boat is Karl I’m curious
He is a Reinke Super 10
The name "Karl"is Cantonese it means family.
No, it is not an original Cantonese name. Think about it...
"Karl Name Meaning. German, Dutch, Scandinavian, and eastern and southern Slavic: from the personal name Karl, from a common Germanic word, Old High German karl 'man', 'husband', 'freeman'. See also Carl and Charles.

Oh, I see you know your nautical rope ties, and a you know a few of the terminology, but that is limited. Clove hitch is simple, and the bow line is not. Well not for me when I was in the boy scouts. But none the less you know your way around your home, your Karl. Oh those old and thread barren shorts and the tank top could be made into a small sail or flag. Ciao and safe voyage.
Him? It's a her.
What in heaven brought you to Panama to buy a boat? You could have the best pick in your own country or Holland. I guess you wanted a boat in the area you wish to sail in.
+zzp1 *Him? It's a her.*
Well, she named her boat Karl, so to her it's a him.
That could be the answer. I named my boat after a naughty goddess. A daughter of Poseidon, reason that we survived so many storms.
Hi +zzp1, a bit of a late response, but I just found your question cause someone recently commented on it...You can check out why I decided to buy Karl in Panama in this video if you like ruclips.net/video/w0PpT8jEatc/видео.html
"It's a her? Say's who? FYI: there have been famous ships in world history that were not given feminine names.
Besides, your grammar is incorrect. The English traditional grammar rule states when a pronoun follows a linking verb, such as "is," the pronoun should be in the subject case --> So, if you want to criticize her decision to give the boat a masculine name then at the least use the correct feminine pronoun "she".

I understand that this is in the past but just the same. Black mold can pose a serious health hazard. Breathing mold is really not the best idea. On short periods your body is perfectly capable of handling mold spores. But on repeated or long exposure there is a much larger chance of getting a fungal infection and they can get really nasty. If your exposure is over longer periods i would maybe sleep on deck or ware a well fitting mask not just a dust mask.
YOU CAN STOP MOLD BY DRYING UP THE AIR. GET A DEHUMIDIFIER AND RUN IT WHILE YOU ARE NOT THERE AND IT WILL STOP THE MOLD. YOU CONTROL MOLD BY CONTROLLING THE HUMIDITY. MY FRIENDS BOATS NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM THEY LIVE IN THE TROPICS. THEY RUN A DEHUMIDIFIER.
What did you pay for Karl?
Hi +UPGardenr, you can find the answer to that on my website: whitespotpirates.com/faq/ :)
Ahoy, Nike
