  • On Saturday 31st May 2014, a group of us became the first band ever to ring a quarter peal on each of the Isle of Wight's 14 towers in a single day. The core band consisted of Kieran Downer (Brading,) Daniel Graham, Kristian Scudamore, Philip Moyse (Southampton,) and Simon Edwards (Swindon,) who rang in all 14; Colin Butler (Southampton) rang in the first 9 and Steve Castle (Southampton) rang in the last 5. We went into changes at Godshill at around 7.03am, and came into rounds at Arreton at around 9.43pm. During the day, we clocked up a total of 17,821 changes in 9hr15, this does not count rounds (test, opening, closing,) and ringing up and down, and makes no account for travelling between towers!!
During the day we had fantastic help and support from many Island ringers, not only those who rang with us but in particular Barry & Margaret Downer who went ahead to many of the towers to make sure the bells were up and ready to ring, and then came back when we were finished to lower them; this saved us masses of time and energy by not having to worry about raising and lowering!! The tower correspondents and other band members who we met along the way were all enthusiastic and never batted an eyelid, even when we started running pretty late towards the end of the day!! It was very gratifying that some Island ringers came out to Arreton at the end of the day to wish us well and listen to the 14th and final quarter, and cheer us back into rounds!!
Enjoy the memoirs of this day, completely crazy but thoroughly enjoyable; thanks to Kieran for organising it, and procuring a recording of Niton for me after my camera failed!! We also raised over £750 for the Brading Bells restoration appeal in sponsorship, the cherry on the cake to the adventure!! :-)

Well done everyone! You all look a bit dazed by the end... I find 5 in a day more than enough!

Dazed? Just delighted and relieved to get through them all, having been up and ringing/travelling for nigh on 15 hours and surviving on sugar (think I downed 3 litres of Lucozade during the course of the day, lol!) Excellent outing, I would do it again, and so pleased it came off!!
