    As someone from Konstanz:
During WW2 we used to leave our lights on instead of turning them off like many other cities did to avoid getting spotted by bombers.
We wanted the Americans to think we were part of Switzerland, and they did fall for it.
As a result, Konstanz has a wonderful old town untouched by the bombs of World War 2 and is, in my opinion, the prettiest city on the Lake of Constance and one of the prettiest in Germany.

They mailed cartons of beer (in cans) to the local DHL lockers on Sylt so they already had sufficient beer supplies in place by the time they arrived. Yes, Deutsche Bahn may suck. Yes, our politics may sometimes be a dumpster fire. But when it comes to establishing a steady supply of beer, Germans can be relied upon. We take our beer very seriously. ;)

Some Hannover lore: Hannover is situated where it is because there happened to be a high riverbank (that's where Hannover gets its name from: "Honovere", which translates to "At the high riverbank") safe from regularly occurring floods of the resident Leine river. In addition to this, at the place of Hannover's founding, there happened to be a stream island and relatively slim river plain plus shallow ford, making for a good point to cross the river there. Perhaps because of that, there was a crossing of two major roads at that location. So naturally, a medieval mercantile town would flourish there, as sources suggest, as early as 950 a.d. .

@@rcookie5128 I love Etymology too! That's why I already knew about the origins of my home city's name. The rest was a bit tedious but fun research^^
So: here's a speedfire round of the briefest possible origins of some of Germany's big cities:
-Berlin: from the slavic "birl/berl", meaning swamp, and the common suffix -in. basically "swamp city"
-Hamburg: from "hamme" meaning crook or turn, likely referring to the curvy Alster river nearby. burg just means castle.
-Munich/München: from "munich/münich" meaning monk, related to the town being gifted to a monastery. so "The monks' town"
-Stuttgart: from "stuotgarte", a compound word meaning "horse garden", or stud farm.
-Rostock: from the slavic "roztok/rostok" meaning "parting of a river", referring to the Warnow river spreading out towards the baltic sea.
-Bochum: from "bukhem/bokheim" with buk(e)/bok(e) refering to the beech tree, and -heim, a common suffix for german towns simply meaning home. ( it's very common in germany to have towns named after trees)
-Dresden: from the old sorbian "drezd'any" meaning "denizens of the swamp valley".
so yeah, germans really like their rivers, trees and swamps when naming their towns.

      @MichaeltheORIGINAL1 2 года назад +97

This brings an anecdote to mind. Many years ago I had this buddy of mine living in the north of Germany and we wanted to hang out. He was always telling me about how cool of a city he thought Frankfurt is, especially the inner city around the skyscrapers and so forth... As someone living in Frankfurt all his life, I tried to lower his expectations just a little...
The bottom line is that when he came over to Frankfurt and wanted to see the main station area with me and another friend after 20-30 minutes he started looking visibly more and more disgusted and distressed until he begged us to "just go away from here and go to your place"(my place), not to mention the wonderful constant smell of junky urine almost everywhere at the main station.
Frankfurt has some beautiful areas along its newly redone Altstadt at the Römer, the Main River, and further out from the inner city, but I am not surprised that when people only know the main station and Hauptwache/Zeil that they rightfully believe it to be one if not the worst city in all of Germany. I am after all still a proud Hessian that acknowledges the many issues around here.

Da muss man schon etwas genauer hinschauen.

I railed some super cute femboys in Cologne, unfortunately, not all fem guys there are as adorable and cute as the two in the clip here. ;) I'm super straight, bro, feminine, cute fem-guys, trans girls and hot biological girls all the way for life! ;)

The footage that you used for Lower-Saxony is actually from the Netherlands. ''Groene hart'' on the brown sign translates to ''Grun Herz'' or ''Green Heart''
