  • Easy, Cheap, DIY Bed Frames for the Kansas Cabin!
Me and Hannah got tired of sleeping on air mattresses on the floor, so we went to Walmart and bought us a few twin mattress! I build some really simple bed frames from scraps we had to put in the bedroom we have the air conditioner in!
    Preciate y’all!

Ain't NUTTIN' wrong with those bed frames !! Sturdy and up off the floor, life is GOOD! How you gonna get any work done without Merle there to supervise the doings? 'Cause you KNOW, you'll be missing opportunities to throw a ball for him, and all of the other ways he "helps". Glad to see you made it safely.

I had to pay $1600 to get power ran for 400 yards from the pole to my farm cabin way back in 1993 in rural Ky. I was supposed to get that refunded to me after 10 years of paying the monthly bills, but they had stopped doing that. Go figure? They broke their word. You might want to look into buying a solar kit with lithium batteries. RUclips has many videos on how to build these on your own from kits. You can put in a decent sized solar power system for $4500 and run everything that you need even in the winter because it will be oversized for when the sunlight is weaker then.
Have fun in Alaska Hannah! Love hearing your commentary! That tractor ain't what's cute, you are! :-)

Jeff, it was gonna cost me $35,000 to run electric to my cabin. Plus, I had to get 4-40' easements through other people's property. I put in solar! I didn't know anything about installing solar, and very little about wiring. But my sons and I watched a lot of RUclips videos and ended up doing everything ourselves. It's something we're really proud of.

    • @joefudd

The only expensive part is the cost of the wire and the lithium or lead acid batteries. The solar panels and inverter aren't all that bad cost wise.

Wonder if the power price was quoted higher because it's a cabin that wouldn't use electricity 90 percent of the year and they wouldn't make any return on the investment. Where as a house they would be selling you power every month and eventually start making there money back.... love the cabin! Keep up the good work!

When I moved to SD 34 years ago, the homestead was in the country. We were the last house on the electrical power line. Our electric was outrageously high, compared to my neighbors up the road. After a few months of paying $400 to $500 per month. I told the power company to come and get their damn meter off my property. I installed solar panels on the roof and had 2 wind generators. I had more electrical power than I knew what to do with. A few years later I added another wind generator to power my shop. There’s a new solar panels that can extract H2O out of the air.

I believe the $16k. Want to run electricity about 250' from the road up in Maine and it's over $5k. Fortunately, I got electricians in the family so that cost can get cut by a lot. I'm going to put the line underground. All I need to do is pay for the materials, fire the grill up and make sure we don't run out of beer.

2 years ago here in Arkansas my buddy had electric ran to his cabin, about 400 yards as well, $20,000 was the charge. Totally ridiculous, but when it’s not to a residence they give no breaks, if it had been to a residence, it’s like Jeff says, the first couple poles are no charge, and would’ve been about half the price

Jeff, you need to build a Delco House (look it up, it was before your time.) It's basically a small building that houses a bank of batteries to run your appliances. The original Delco houses used a small generator to charge the batteries, but you could use solar panels and use your generator to charge the batteries, when the solar panels were insufficient to keep up with demand. The solar panels would also keep the batteries from freezing during long periods of inactivity,

But I can't stand to be cold cause it causes me so much more pain. I would rather sleep on a couple of blankets on the floor than and air mattress.
Jeff you might find out that Kansas is just as proud of their propane as they are of their electricity. I would definitely try to go solar if you can.

I'm worried about the times ahead and you two seem to be very capable woods people and I would trust your opinions of the books more than my own. Perhaps it could be a revenue stream for you to sell reference books or gear off a website. Thx (sorry for the redundancy I figure you might not have a chance to see this since you have an incoming hurricane (I wish you good luck) so I hedged my bets and posted on both channels).

You should look into a heat pump system, you could do that whole cabin with one head. Heat pumps are awesome because they cool and dehumidify in the summer and heat in the winter, and they run at 110v so you could run it off your generator.

  • @lastresortrescueandrepair

Look at the Winco pto driven generators , you can run it off your tractor . I just installed two propane units on our place , propane vs diesel , diesel is cheaper, and you can go get it yourself anytime , propane cost more and someone has to bring it to you. Anyway good luck .

Find out the codes for Kansas and trench and bury conduit and run up the pole. Hire and electrical contractor to pull the cable and connect to your panel at the cabin. Be sure there is enough cable to run up the pole and connect to the overhead cables. Price the cable to see if you can save money buying the cable or having the electrical contractor price. Be sure all is permitted and inspected.
