In 1981, I remember watching Betty Cook win the race off Saugatuck, Michigan in the Michelob Light. Rough day. I remember hearing she got pretty banged up in the 2nd lap. Tough gal. I was in a boat with my family. Our friends were in one of the race patrol boats. Blows me away that they raced up the Detroit River that year and that the catamaran "Satisfaction" at 34:42 had a step hull back then! I had NO idea those existed that long ago. Cool stuff. Great video.
My dad was always into powerboats, and of course, he got me interested in them when I was very young. Dad and I love the Fountain, Baja, Cigarette, Apache, Outerlimits and more. We have a Baja 272 currently and I absolutely love it!
great to see some of my late friend and employer, Stephen Fried's passion for Offshore Racing being shared with the world. I was fortunate to work with him for 5 years video taping the races and promoting an amazing sport. He passed away suddenly in 1985. I continued to work for the company he started with partners Ken Squire & Fred Rhinestein for many years. Please post some others if you can. Thanks!!

Love these vintage offshore race boat videos. Growing up in Miami in the 1980's my father and I watched quite a few races from our own boat. But I'm not so sure about this guy's way of describing the g-forces in one of those boats as being stronger than someone blasting off in a rocket. Back in 1981 crewed space travel coming out of the Saturn V program and going into the Shuttle program and those machines have some incredible g-forces when they light the candles. Not subtracting from the power of the boats...but I think sitting on the top of a ballistic missile which is basically what put the first American into space would have more g-forces.
I went to work for Cougar shortly after Halpern was killed in that Michelob Cougar cat. My first job was to cut the damaged cockpit out of the boat so it could be used in a court case.
The Michelobe boat sat right next to the 58 foot patrol boat prototype I was in charge of building at Cougars 188th, street factory . The old Donzi plant . I remember it well . Because no one wanted to look in the cockpit because of the mess that was still there . I worked for Brownie and Steve Ridgway the President and Vice President of Cougar marine . I don't remember seeing you anywhere ? I was there 3 years . No one cut the cockpit out of anything without me knowing about it ! Oh ! for you V bottom Guys . Fuck you . Cougar cats ruled the day .
