God, these donation messages are so often the funniest part of Doug's videos. He starts the bits, and I know there are a lot of unfunny ones that get cut, but the few that take the bit further are always magical.

I really disagree with Doug on this. I feel like Doug is seeing it through the lens that views have more engagement. But subs represent to me that at one time a person was interested enough to hit subscribe. They might not always stick around, but it shows that two million individual people decided to subscribe
I'm subscribed to over 700 channels. All of these clearly interested me enough to subscribe at some point, but for many of them I can't even remember who they are. Subscribing is easy and ultimately doesn't matter. There's no limit to it or attached cost. Actually watching videos regularly and engaging with them takes up time, which *is* very limited. I agree with Doug that one is vastly more meaningful than the other.

Subscribing on youtube is like following on twitch. Subscribers (or followers) do turn into viewers sometimes, but it's a relatively low exchange rate (usually about 20%)

@@LordAJ12345 Oh yeah I understand that. Views are a much better representative of those who engage continuously with your content. But I think he undermines the value of that sub. It's still a show of someone who is or was at one point engaged enough with your content they subscribed. It doesn't cost anything sure. But it still shows someone who willingly did it. Who made an individual action and went out of there way to engage at one point (no matter how small it was out of there. They still did it.)
This feels like one of those abusive relationships where we love DougDoug but he hates us so we try to divorce him but then he comes back later with his smooth talk and 'thumbs ups' in the comments session.

Well it’s probably because of how subs work, take those channels with 300,000 so subs their videos usually end up with 2,000 maybe 3,000 views. The views themself are what give the profits and what not, having subs doesn’t mean anything if they aren’t active watchers
There is a german youtuber called "ultralativ" who once talked about how the subscribe button has become pretty irrelevant and youtube algorithm has already become so good, that you wouldnt miss a video from certain creators, even if you dont subscribe to them and how (in theory) youtube COULD remove the subscribe function and it wouldnt really matter.
