- $1,000 of bonding agent in our hands and one chance not to mess this up.
Matt and I have been quite busy these past few days (just finished this project yesterday) and using the warm weather at our disposal to break out our methacrylate bonding agent again. It's the adhesive we use to bond all the pieces of the hull together before they get glassed.
Most of the boat HAS been put together at this point, but we still have the very large cabin top to contend with. Before we can even attach it to the boat, we need to bond the three separate pieces together. Matt spends a few days prepping the overlapping flanges, and then we're ready to go.
This round we're lucky to have a new batch of methacrylate with a longer working time, going from 45 minutes previously up to 90 minutes now. And for the first bond we need every single minute, as things are not lining up like they should.
We hope you enjoy!
Loved the comment. " You won't see the join when it's covered in Solar!" So so true.
MJ, glad to see you guys are making progress. Regarding the lighting, a couple people have said, they wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said anything, which is true. I think someone else said, White Balance, which is possible. You all are working under a giant light box powered by inconsistent natural light. You are also going from DSLR to GoPro. Light temperature, tint, saturation is changing constantly. For still photography this is great, for film or video it is more challenging.
All in all, your editing is great, sound levels are great. I wouldn't worry about.
It is definitely a white balance issue, and it tends to happen while filming on our GoPro while on deck of the boat. Something about the tent always takes the white balance very yellow. Unfortunately when doing a timed task like this (working with methacrylate) there isn't the option to stop and manually adjust the white balance, so we leave it on auto. I was hoping someone knew more about how to adjust in post, so I can bring down the yellow (by adding blue), without getting a green hue to it.
@@MJSailing Don't know what editing software you are using. I use Premier Pro. In filters, you should be able to autocorrect in tint and contrast. Yellow is a warmer tone, blue is cooler. The problem is, if you try to adjust too much to a cooler tone, you will wash out background and some detail.
Unless you want to spend multiple thousands of dollars on camera gear and lighting, and more time editing than on the build, don't worry about it. Your edits are smooth and your content is great.
If you are really concerned, get a Gray Card. B&H has them or any good camera shop will have them. Set your camera white balance and metering on the Gray Card. This is old school, but works very well. I don't know about GoPro, that is a question for them if metering or white balance can be set.
But seriously J, your content is very, very good. If you want me to critique something... when you end your videos, end it with a hook of what is next or a smooth ending.
You two are doing fine. Natural light is natural light. You have thousands of people watching your videos, a lot of sailors and a lot of dreamers. Don't sweat the small stuff.
All my best to you and M.
Wisdom I learned and live by:
The difference between the novice and craftsman is that the craftsman knows how to cover up their mistakes.
Solar panels!
Certain parts of this project refocus me on how huge this project is. This one, maybe because of the size of the pieces involved did it to me. When that happens, I'm reminded how great a team you both are together to take on a project like this (and the ones before it) and do such a great job. This could be a master class on how to do a big project with so many elements that are important and being done for the very first time. So impressive.
Nice Job, on the fitment. Yeah, I can imagine the stress when things don't quite qo in your favor and time is running out.
Looking good! Don't sweat the tint or the yard noise, it's the content we love and I for one don't notice the noise.
Energizer rechargeable batteries are absolutely a game changer!
We have rechargeable AA, but not AAA, lol.
looking great
Thank you!
Another interesting video showing two people working together to achieve completion of their dream. Gonna be one beautiful catamaran when you finish!
great work, love to watch the progress and I could not have done it. keep up the stellar work.
nice one! cool music too. fine example of Michigan no quit every week folks..tune in
Awww! Thanks so much for joining us each week!
I feel your pain. Dry fit, ok, final assembly, not ok. Stay safe, and we'll see you next week.
Love those big sunglasses, classy cool!!!! Given the methylacrylates properties of slightly lower heat usage envelope it occurs to me that sitting the solar panels right on top of those flanges could be problematic. Some panels I have used do get extremely hot, like a baking sheet! Since solar panels also degrade in performance when too hot it made me wonder if a thin water based heat absorbsion layer under the the panels would make sense. It could double as a hot water heater or pre-heater. It's amazing how much we learn from watching these videos, Matt you are awesome for explaining all these steps! Jess you continue to stun us with your video work and comments, much appreciation, you are creating an amazing body of work! Oh, and thanks for the cool T-shirt, I really like the graphics, did you design those? I was thinking it would be fun to make them 3D and animate them with a ray tracer.
You two are doing so much work. It is constantly impressive. I've been hitting roadblocks with my plane build. Stupid stuff but you just motivated me get out there and do some work on other parts that aren't up to the roadblocks. BACK TO WORK! Also, the yellow tint in the video isn't anything I would have noticed had you not mentioned it. Love the videos...
Simply amazing!
The white balance ( lighting color ) is what needs to be adjusted . Usually it is the camera setting jumping around when it is set to automatic and camera is panned to different diffused light color shades .
I wish I had the time to manually adjust the white balance on our GoPro while we're working, but trying to film along with the time constraint of the methacrylate means it's best left on auto. I was hoping someone would have really good tips on how to fix it in post for when it does come up. I know enough to improve it from the original, but not enough to make it look natural.
summer will be very interesting.......
Last summer it only got up to 95 in the tent, we're hoping this year will be the same. 🤞
Props to yall! Unless its like 10 percent of the cost of a factory finished boat I would never consider building one from a kit like yall! Great work but wow wat a ton of work! Looking good and you guys have way more patience than me
For us it's not even necessarily about the cost savings. We just love building. 😍
I appreciate the quality of the videos guys. I'm gonna share a thought about how Heroic it seems your effort is there. ~ Just thinking about another build over there in V.N. ~. Lots of people ~ I wish an army of volunteers to descend upon the project. There's that teak 250 foot boat in Costa Rica with so many skilled people working. Both of you have excellent communication skills. And amazing skills generally. I don't know. Maybe "put out" that you have a need for three crews of ten people each with very specific task areas and then manage them. I just don't know. Heroic really. If I were younger. An army, that's what you need. I pray that you both will be able to live happily ever after. God Speed. ✨🙏✨
We have a number of people that have volunteered to come help, but we're very adamant this build will be completed by the two of us. It's the only legacy we'll be leaving behind in our lives, lol.
Great video !
What a satisfying episode! You guys will have her done before you know it, and then you can finally start building one for me!
🤣🤣. Build another.... you're funny.
its looking AMAZING.........awesome work..folks
Thank you so much!
It so awesome to see the Cat coming Together. Can’t believe how so many people building Cats after you starting yours. . Take Care Love the New Makeup 💄 look.
I filmed that first segment just before a dinner at the yacht club last night, lol.
It’s looking great. It’s nice to see sometimes things go as well as they are planned!
Donate for a Dream
Let's just hope when the roof gets bonded to the boat it all goes smoothly!
Quote of the build to date, "It's amazing how much better things go when your expectations are low". Love it Matty. Wetsand out the bubble wrap stains with 1200grit before polishing if they don't clean up before hitting the sun.
We've said we'll get that bubble wrap off for the past 6 months :). But yes, we'll get it off before it hits the sun and bakes into the gelcoat
You guys are doing great.
Thank you so much Fred!
Thanks for sharing in your hard dedicated work of building your home
Thank you so much for following along with us!
My goodness! How satisfying this work must have been. Your home is taking shape and you will soon have a splashable hull that can be finished in the tent or on the water. Lots of finishing to do but you’re doing everything right because the urge to move fast must be difficult to resist. Happy times and good weather ahead!
The good thing we learned from our last build is that work basically stops once we get on the water. So if we want something done (and well) it needs to be done on the hard, haha.
When you say 'soon' you mean 500 years time?
Grand, really MOJO impressive, so Happy for you both.
Looking great, good job you two!
Thank you so much!
I hope you feel better after a days work now than I do. Of course I am old so there is that. I love your video’s too
We're always exhausted, but that's to be expected, lol.
Big step! So stoked for you guys!
Thank you so much!
As far as the color grading thing, my answer would be modulated by the video editing software you use and your knowledge about white balance. I use PowerDirector 21 for my videos, it's feature pack for the semi-pro while easy enough to understand. Not an ad, it's just my personal opinion.
We've been with Adobe for so long now. I've heard there's other good programs out there, but between the build and all the editing, I don't know if I have the spare time to learn a new one at the moment, haha.
Every week more gets done the tops look great looking forward to the progress next week.
Thank you!! I'm having a friend intern next week, any suggestions on what we should make her do? 😃🤣
Slow progress is expected but results are worth it, and it amazing. Great job.
Thank you so much! We can't wait to install the acrylic and hatches later this year for another big transformation.
Progress is looking great! Watching this during the thunderstorm rolling through DC. Hope your tent fairs okay! 🤞
We're hoping it just misses us! We always look like we're about to get slammed, and then it goes north. 🤞
Good progress this week, keep it up
Thank you so much!!
The colour shift in the tent is white balance, try just re-setting white balance on the effected clips without any other correction or grade, easy in Davinci, no experience with PS. The best way would be to take a couple frames holding a reference card in those areas/clips where you expect the shift to occur, and correct to the card in your editor.
Flange is one of my favourite words
Who says it better - Matt or Jess? 🤣
@@MJSailing I just love Jess rockin the Falange! Don't stop saying it YOUR way Jess! 👍
@@tomcoon9038 I don't think I could if I tried, haha.
;-) What I saw here gives me courage to rip the top off my boat and jack it up just like you did.
You can do it!! 😃👍
@@MJSailing I'd have to be an idiot, but I'm willing to own it. ;-)
You guys are so meticulous! Wonerful to see. Do you follow RAN sailing? Another interesting , very detail oriented build by someone learning as they go. Great folks, great channel.
Wow now that is a huge roof section
Certainly shows how big the Cat HUGE
No need to apologise for the yellow adds to the effects
Have a wonderful Sunday and a great week ahead.
All the best
My son and I prepped Maranatha last Friday for splash. Fresh bottom coat and wax. Clean etc. We did a 10.5 mile sail (steamed) from Winthrop Harbor to Waukegan. Thought about you guys in the shed putting your cat together the whole time I was at the helm. Can’t wait until you guys get her in the water. Got a name yet? Oh ya, excited big time to see this come together. Also can’t wait to see Georgie on patrol on this boat! A cat in a cat! ☺️
great job, looking good
Thank you so much!
You have a roof!!!! Great advancements
Things will start speeding up now, can I just say after following you for a long time now that you guys are doing an awesome job, I am looking forward to seeing you on the water.
For the Yellow Colour. If in Premiere Pro go to Lumenentry Colour > curves > hue vs hue curve > eyedrop the colour and pull toward the green then > open Hue vs Saturation > eyedropper > pull key frame gown.
The best way is to shoot a chip chart or grey card and make a lut you can apply to the clips. This will work welI in Davincie resolve as Resolve can work natively with some colour chip charts. Once you have made a lut you can apply it in most all editors.
Edit: the xrite colour chart is ideal if you are still having issues.
great video......hey are yalls friends tula's endless summer coming to help work on yalls boat wile theirs is being finished?
Their boat's on its way. I'm sure they're too excited to come sand when that shinny thing is waiting!
Cling Film - or similar food wrap type material applied to the scales so you can get sticky mess all over it without any harm .. ... ..
M&J - MAC is for structure, not looks. Connecting the structural laminates of each shop produced part has to be the goal. It's NOT putty!! Glad to see you executing these MAC bonds and the good flange details you were given by the shop!! Just think, you just completed the single biggest MAC project stateside this year. You can be a consultant!!! Back to grinding, fairing and gel coating!!! Will it ever end??? Hope so.
Another big chunk done. You will have it weather tight before you know it.
As to your suggestion about the yellow tinge, you might want to do a white balance prior to filming (not sure if you have a camera that has that capability) the other option is in post-production find your white balance wand and click on your screen on something that is suppose to be white.
We're always working with our GoPro at the moment because we know it will get covered in resins. We used to manually adjust the white balance, but sometimes it will come out too blue - to the point we can't improve it in post. 😥
to whiten gelcoat mix a handful of oxcalic acid with a gallon of water, wear gloves and wipe on with a sponge or rag then wait 20 minutes, wash off with water.
you need one on the otherside to match !
When you walk or work in the shade change the white balance from Auto to Cloudy
Hope you put up the Wish List.
Do no see a color problem in video.👍👌
If you put the scale into a plastic bag like a freezer bag or another clear one it will last a lot longer as it stays clean.
Which cat will be complete first? Yours or Ross's from Life on the Hulls?
I didn't see any issue with the color of the video. Cheers
I was able to get rid of some of the yellow, but then it leaves a green/yellow hue. Something I need to work out - but I'm glad to hear it's not a big distraction!
Всё получится.
We hope so!
Hard to believe how long that compression post took to get done
We dropped off the aluminum before Thanksgiving. 😭
HI guys, nice work. For your video being yellow this may be the problem. About 15 years ago I was on a project that involved building a custom designed digital camera. There was an issue with yellow tinting in the images. The electronics engineers worked out it was a power supply issue. I can't remember if it was low voltage or low amperage but that caused the problem - it affects the sensor somehow (I'm IT not electronics so don't understand that stuff). Maybe if it happens again take note if the batteries are old (maybe end of life) or the state of charge at the time. Just an idea, cheers.
Love that… …cover it with solar panels, and you’ll never see it.
And we're going to need all that solar with our electric propulsion and electric galley. 😃
I have been on deployment for the last 8 months. You have both done a great job.
if your video is overly yellow add blue. if its too cyan add red. if its overly magenta add green (but beware messing with the magenta and green can effect skin tone in a negative way) cheers, hope it helps. (it also works in reverse, too much blue, add yellow).
you can also play around with auto color correction. i know in final cut x you can have many dissimilar clips corrected to look similar. (auto doesnt always work though)
Unfortunately in Premier, it doesn't have the slider for cyan/red. I bring down the yellow closer to blue, but it leaves the image with a green hue. But when I try to adjust to magenta, it quickly switches to a magenta hue. Even if I work with the hues in the shadow/highlight wheel, I can't get a normal color. Big bummer for me, lol.
It is strange how Adobe Photoshop has the cyan/red adjustment, but Premier doesn't. It would make such a big difference!
You look beautiful tho out in the sunshine
Love the videos and time you guys are taking to get this near perfect. Does the kit include the mast and rigging or do you get those items after you've completed the main boat?
The kit is just the fiberglass parts. As you see, just about every builder is going to want to spec the details themselves, so no point in offering the rig, hardware, etc with the kit
@@MJSailing I see makes total sense. You guys are great love the channel!
A little closer to splash.
Every week we get one step closer. 😍
How long have you been doing this for?
We are 25 months into the build.
@@MJSailing wow! What a feat! Incredible work
I know it’s hot but you need to protect your knees and all of your legs by wearing trousers. Shorts are a no no.especially when working with fibre glass. Good luck.
Most of big pieces like this top were cut due to shipping to you in a container. How do they build these Catamaran at their ship yard as one piece or they still cut and glue together? These pieces are made via uni body molds so not sure if Max cruise ship building and body molds are at same location?
They are made in the same molds. They still have flanges on the production boats, but we get these, along with under the bridge deck. Those are the only difference
Nice work, guys. 6P= proper planning prevents piss pour performance
Did the restaurant reopen?
Should open the being May. We'll see
We know you two want to do as much of this as possible by yourselves, but would not an extra pair (or two) of hands be really useful when dealing with these large sections?
We had Tucker and Alex from the marina available, but with the jacks, it went smoother just the two of us.
get some neodymium powerfull magnets to hold seams together so you dont have to drill screws
A lot of it is pressure and Matt will go through and tweak how much pressure is under the cleat by pulling it up or pressing it down, and the screws really help with that. But...the whole area will get sanded and glassed, so those will be hidden soon. 😉
That looks stressful and exhausting
I thought you ended up damaging one of the panels. Not sure if I would have chosen to drop the panel into place like you did without a third person. Using one part gives you more working time to fit things into place, but drastically less strength with the bond. 90 minutes is still not long enough for two man first timers.
Do it ten times and you just might start to be completely happy with the results.
I did a one piece extension to a previously owned catamaran. One sixth the size of what you dealt with and became paralyzed because of my critical eye.. One of the many traps you will fall into going to boat shows and seeing the newer boats. In the end who really gives a shit when it's covered up by solar panels? I do. No PTSD ever for me. Lots of overtime due to my OCD.
Not sure if it's wise to start a treatment for OCD before you finish your catamaran. The only thing that ever held my tenacity together. Never punted other than with ex-wives.
It's a two part methacrylate used for all these bonds. The methacrylate we used for all the other bonds and a working time of 45 minutes.
Great progress! I think you're too hard on yourself about the color - the video looked good to me.
Thank you so much!! I just hate when it's compared to the clips where the white balance is correct. Even when I do color correction to the yellow bits it ends up with a greenish tinge and I hate it, haha.
Is super yellow a real colour?
If you saw the non color corrected clip...yes it is, haha.
$1,000 for a tub of adhesive sounds hugely expensive. The wholesale price of these adhesives is a fraction of that. I guess there are import tariffs in the USA, but these prices are astronomical and perhaps influenced by the proprietary modification of the various brands who resell it. I am no longer involved in the international trade, so don't have visiblity of the base prices. Perhaps volume builders in the far east would share their cost prices for this stuff. I think people have no idea of the basic production and market prices in countries from Egypt to Asia. There needs to be several RUclipsrs, buyers consortia to grapple with the prices. Alot of these materials trade at a few $ a kg, and even for Carbon fibre the big cost is the technically tricky cutting to size.
This is made in the USA with USA chemicals - we had to wait last time ordering them for the plant to make it. And, it's way cheaper than any other type of methacrylate. Plexus is the brand the yard uses in Vietnam which would be about $2500 for this quantity
Epoxy prices have risen dramatically in the last 2 years.
Can you get volunteers helping you lifting up the big pieces in place?
We probably could, but the two of us have had really good luck with jack stands once the pieces have been brought into the tent.
@MJ Sailing please don't drop any of the pieces. There are safety in numbers.
Its strange how UMA cant even repair their boat but you'se can build one from scratch.
So you did not watch their (UMA) last video in full or even correctly or you desired to slag another 'tuber do to hate?
Tsk Tsk.
Turning Japanese I really think so.
Astectics maybe tooomuch a priority, Stuctrual is Is the most important.
Why do people have such issues with Falanges? They never bothered anyone. Hey, if you guys haven’t decided on a name yet, I have an idea.
We haven't 100% decided - what's the suggestion?
Yellowish video sounds to be caused by your white balence being in the wrong setting. Try setting it manually instead of automatically
Let me ask you would you rather spend the day sailing or have a near perfect toilet paper holder??? Everyday you spend making accessories is a day less sailing. But hey you won't have a perfect toilet paper holder if you spend a year making the perfect toilet paper holder YOU WILL KNOW ITS NOT PERFECT AND YOU WILL KNOW YOU WASTED A MONTHS SAILING FOR THE CRAPPY ASS WIPE HOLDER.
We enjoy both. If the goal was only to go sailing, we wouldn't be building a boat.
