Her mind was kinda like “yeah you’re gonna be frozen in this period of recovery for the rest of your life” so this song is about that. Ariana and The Weeknd were catching up, she sent him what she had written for his opinion, and The Weeknd wrote a verse and sent it to her. She says he wrote from the perspective of this new guy who’s trying to reassure her and be understanding of her fears/past while knowing that there are certain shoes he has to fill.
I love that note change Ariana did with the “can I still love youyouyou baby” in the beginning. It’s always fun to hear her live bc she adds things that aren’t in the original version.
