This was such a cool experiment! Good to know it doesn't really make a difference lol. What if you tried posting a video that was monetized at first and then turn off monetization when views are a bit more stable? I'd like to see if that video's performance changes after that. You can also compare it to your channel's average performance.

@@vidIQ I meant turning monetization on as soon as you hit publish instead of monetizing older videos that were initially not monetized (if that makes sense lol) Not sure if the results would be different though

Like you said in the end, it probably doesn't make a difference. However, for me personally, my overall channel performance actually started going down a little. I assume it's because my audience is towards younger people and they tend to be more susceptible to clicking off when ads are shown before the content. Though in general, it doesn't hurt too much and interesting videos will make people stay, so in the long run you might as well get those sweet bucks from the days you spend on editing.
Mine too - I had a pretty sharp rise up to monetization and it's slowed to a steady amount of new subs, and actually fewer views. But I think it had more to do with crypto winter and the resulting fewer searches on my topic rather than the monetization (but hard to know!).

How much time does RUclips generally take to review a channel for monetization in 2022? Mine is stuck for 5 days. 😵😵😵
Can be as quick as 48 hours or could take a full month.
LOL, guys. WHY would you not monetize your channel? Granted, it seems to not increase views (maybe), but what about that missed $500,000? Keep your channel monetized. You deserve to be paid.
Whether we monetize the channel or not, we make most of our money elsewhere.
RUclips seems to force you to prove yourself when you have a small channel. Then they reward you once you’ve proven that you can generate views, subscribers, ctr, and retention.
I think switching off non-skippable ads, and ads at the beginning of the video will increase the views a lot. Pre-video ads make audience sometimes click away.

@@vidIQ Yes I'm sure. It's the same effect as an intro. They click away. NEVER PUT A NON-SKIPPABLE AD IN FRONT OF YOUR VIDEO.

Lol same, it seems to be if you own a vehicle and making videos exploring that really brings views, just remember to always ad tags in your videos. But also iv noticed on a few other channels i have, *how to do videos* seems to really bring a ton views in, i have a gaming channel and i made a few how to do videos and i got 5.9k views , thats the highest i ever had it before

Calculations of youtube are abit tricky. You hardly understand. Sometimes you get more views yet less revenue

0:15 Here’s my answer to the question: 100 million views can get you quite a lot of money. It heavily depends on the videos, though. With shorts, you probably get a few dollars (+ maybe a few thousands dollars with Shorts Bonus)
But with videos that are over a minute long, you can get over $100,000. If your video is over 8 minutes long, you could maybe even get $300,000 with it, maybe even more.
So yeah, that’s my answer to the question :)

@@nextis2641 Look, I’m not gonna argue with you. But, I can guarantee large creators are NOT the only people who are having success with shorts. Large creators might have bigger shorts views but they’ve learned what makes something go viral. They had to learn all of that stuff just like us. Took Jimmy (MrBeast) years to find out how to make a viral video, but once he did it skyrocketed. And even the short VidIQ posted gives another great point, a TikTok creator uploaded 752 videos(something like that) and had no success. But, the 753rd went viral and he blew up! Content and consistency is king.

Man it’s been the opposite for me. My channel went up pretty quick, I got monetized in a month and after that it kind of went way down. I’ve seen other “type beat channels” complaining about the same issue and I have no idea what I did wrong.
I'm 1800 watch hours away from testing that theory grrrrrr. so frustrating!! So many of my videos with ads and I can't join the partner program, because shorts don't count!
To answer the revenue question, it really depends on the channel content and format. A longform financial video with 75% views monetized would be around $1.2m where a gaming channel might make $100-200k
A short could be around $50k and if you monetize it through affiliates/sponsorhips you could be looking at multiple millions on top.
Can i earn money with shorts if i use other content creators clips and edit them?

For your information Rob, RUclips does only start showing ads on non-monetized channels on videos that pass the 100 views mark, everything below won't have any ads. I've tested this with this channel more than enough. If you have a monetized channel you can show ads on videos with any view count though.

And there is this, lol it is in youtube best interest that you don't monetize your channel so they do and keep 100% so maybe Rob is right after all, no changes to algo, but like my other two comments do a real test monetize the whole channel for 3 months let's say
Yeah, that is right, we were doing all ours thumbnail with the "no ads" sign on them, but as soon as the any video rich the 100 mark the ads starts showing on the videos :(
@@thesoundofnature5236 if your channel is monetized and you explicitly set to not monetize a video, this shouldn’t happen. The 100 views mark is for videos on non-monetized channels.
Nothing wrong with monetization. Except midrolls. There's something wrong with midrolls.
I think prerolls are more likely to let people click away. And non-skippable ads.

I know how much we make on 100M monetized views. Usually case specific based on a bunch of variables.
I have to say my experience is mixed. Since getting monetised in early July, my views have dropped overall. Can't really explain why at all. I found this video interesting. Thanks
same before monetisation i have around 1-2k views per vid, since monetisation i only have 500-800

there has to be strategy related to content sharing of like content limited to specific playlists to growth hack our way to monetization . @VidIQ? that a thing?
Monetization didn't help one of our channels. We had up to 75k views per day while we were trying to monetize (it was a difficult process for us and we were rejected 5 times). Right after we monetized our channel, our views started going down (we didn't add any commercials in the middle of our videos). Right now, 1 month after monetization, our views are only 20k per day. 🤷♀️

yes i can relate. If the youtube conspiracy is true, thats mean youtube is trying to rob all the ads revenue by intentionally drive up the views until the channel is monetized, and do it over and over again for the new channels

I think switching the year can be somewhat misleading especially in this area. If you guys did something in 2020 and switch the year to 2022 .A good percentage of that video may be outdated . Especially with these "how to videos". Hence the reason it went down a couple of days later . Coincitidental you just happen to turn on the money button... lol
Yeah RUclips Studio has quite often an update. If you change the year you should check if everything is still correct.
But should you NOT update the video and miss out on views and audience?

I can tell you this isn't correct for all channels I got monetized in June and my views have gone down a lot I am guessing some people just really don't like ads.

Rob, you seem to have done these experiments during vacation season. There's a major drop off beginning the second Friday of July which gets worse in August and even worse the week before Labor Day weekend.

RUclips can now put ads on any content, and they keep the money themselves even if the channel is not in the YPP
Thank you so much for making this video. I've been so curious about this. I mean, logically it makes sense that RUclips would want to promote the videos that earn it money. On the other hand, you're right, thinking longer term, they'd also want to foster a good creative environment that allow the best creators to rise.

I always dread January lol.
I’m not monetized nor will I ever be since my watch time hours keep going down. Last year I had approximately 900 watch time hours, I now have 60 ish watch time hours. I’ve watched my numbers keep dropping daily. I’ve tried to find help with RUclips and I’ve hit a brick wall repeatedly. No one ever replies and I can’t get a human to speak to. Totally frustrated!
Watch time expires after 12 months. Only videos watched on your channel in the last year count towards watch time.

I have ad's on videos and my channel is no way close enough to be Monetized, if the video is doing well then youtube will put the ads on that video to make some 100% clean profit, what happens to the money made from a video that is on a channel that is not monetized?
