This is my favorite car of all time. My mom had the exact same one in red but I think it had a sunroof. My dad had a BMW dealership and my mom picked me up from school and and we went to see her new car bring off loaded from the truck. She loved that car. It's great to see a restoration of such a great car; it makes me so happy to see it; thank you 😃😃👍👍👏👏
New Car arrives in the Workshop, the team looks it over , spots massive rust damage ,the cry goes up ,"why can't we ever have nice cars to work on", and the reply comes "If they were nice anyone could fix them" - another cracking project to follow
Interesting how you weld then cut, then weld….and repeat as needed to get the panel flat/straight. Great work Steve! I can’t get enough of the fabrication process! 😉
I've been in the trade for 47 yrs and your work is outstanding . People don't realise what it takes just too patch a panel up thats why i avoid your kind off work. I started in the trade as a painter and thats how i'll end it lol . Great work 👍👍👍
@@yorkshirecarrestoration - yes but never, ever forget how much pleasure YOU are giving to both customers and viewers alike . Why don't you open a shop in Southend ? Big Clue : sea air / rusty cars !
Kicked into a customers '80's RS escort today.. same colour as your beemer.. pulled everything off - interior, all bolt ons, dash, all glass blah blah - had a bare shell + engine/running gear by days end. I think it gives your beemer a run for its money on the "Is any bit not rusted out?" front. :-) That Datsun springs to mind...
Just amazing craftsmanship here, makes it look easy when it is anything but. Getting those things to fit so accurately is very difficult. Not warping it all into a pretzel while welding it is also difficult or blowing lots of holes all over the place and that thin metal.
Steve you should have been a artist, you see the picture before it’s painted! I’ve been messing about welding cars since I was about 18 and now 70 now and your work is absolutely brilliant.
I have an E24 M635CSI just like this one except that it's lived in Texas all its life and doesn't have a spot of rust on it. I did just buy a very rusty Mercedes Benz W111 coupe that looks like it's had a skim coat of filler wiped all over it in a previous restoration that's starting to fail. These videos aren't just educational, but they're therapeutic. Thanks for putting them out there.
Absolutely astonishing fabrication skills from what seems to be 'just a shed' ! However i wonder is: how long will this hold? The rust prevention SEEMS just some zinc spray, which is a pity considering the amount of caring tlc. Another question: you SEEM to cut rusted parts first and than you start fabricating replacement body parts. How do you know the replacement part should look and fit, if the old part is gone (thrown away??) ? Am i right you use the panel on the other mirrored side as guide? Do you spotweld or seamweld the fabricated parts to the original body? Thanks for this video that is both relaxing and educational.
Thank you. All jobs are protected after the job is finished with either access holes and neutraliser and Waxoil or they can be accessed from both sides so treated with paint or underbody treatment. As in the video we measure, make templates and use the original body part as a pattern. We seam weld all jobs after fabrication :)
Just wonderful Steve, you have eyes all over your head to see all the different curves intersecting on the panel and your skill to get that wheel arch curvature on your fabrication to match the car is beyond belief! Just poetry in motion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just found this channel. I watch Mat Armstrong, and my feed suggested checking you guys out. I immediately subscribed. superb skills for sure. I get mesmerized at how you work. Thank you for sharing with all of us. Can you please share what happens to the rusted portion of the wheel well? It looked as though it was not also restored, but has rust damage. Does it get replaced sheet metal and attach to the outer skin, or attached to the Sill that you replaced, off camera filming,? The work you all do for this channel, well, it's great stuff to watch and learn from!
You are amazing at what you do, so satisfying watching you getting your head round making each panel from scratch with no stress😀 can I ask what welder is best for a beginner with no power source?
It's wonderful to know that great craftsmen (if were still allowed to use the word) are still doing this quality of work I look forward to seeing more of the same is there a start to finish set of videos on a vehicle?
I have this exact car in my driveway...in line to get wrenched on with the rest of my projects. Too many car projects my wife says..told her I bought it for her so I could keep it🤣
Two questions please: 1) Did you use 18 or 16 gage steel? 2) what was the distance from the door to the end of the arch panel you fabricated? Is it 49 cm or 50? I am referring to the distance you measured with a ruler. Thank you
Difficult panel to make, nice to see a bead roller used. What decides if a joint is butt or lapp? Is it a technical choice or cost? It's definitely my favourite UTube channel, your workshop now looks 'worked in' with stuff everywhere! 👍🇬🇧

That there is my dream car ! it's a work of art just like your handiwork and I can only hope I can afford one before they are all gone and future governments decide I shouldn't be allowed to drive it anyway 👍 PS have you ever considered offering classes on bodywork ??
It always hurts me to see such extensive rust damage on a beautiful car like this. Especially if someone just smeared bondo on it. You should deal with rust before it gets out of hand. If you just cover it up it continues to eat up the metal underneath. Good that there are Craftsmen like you who can fix it the proper way. I always admired people who can work with metal like that. It is art. I have a 635csi from 83. Luckily only with a few very tiny spots of surface rust in the engine bay and on the wheel arches. All the metal still is untouched original because i deal with the rust as soon as i notice it.
