This guy is so cool. I love how he's not afraid to embrace and enjoy crafts like this because they're traditionally "feminine" things. He's just the kindest dude, these tutorials are helping me so much!
@@PhilsNextKick me too! I'm a girl and I like embroidery and sewing and cross stitching, but I also like building stuff! We need more guys like you who reject toxic masculinity. Thank you again for the tutorials, they've helped me learn so much!
Someone said this on a previous video but you really are a Bob Ross! Especially when one of your stitches wasn't perfect (9:00) but you embraced it anyway! Love your videos, they have really helped! Thank you!
Thanks so much! These videos are better than an online class I was taking. You are clear, concise, and explain things thoroughly. You even answered my question when you explained going from top left to bottom right. Plus I loved your tip on threading the needle. Keep the videos coming! These are so helpful! 😊👍
Thank you! Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually making sense when explaining things, so comments like yours make me feel really good! Glad you are enjoying them!
That was almost exactly what I did. I learned when I was 11, then didn't pick it back up until college. Thankfully it was one of those things that was quite easy to get back into.
Very true this guy is really awesome! Been crossstitching for probably 25 years and I always split 2 strands of floss then threaded needle with all those loose ends so difficult then you had the thread come out of needle! Ugh just frustrating ! The way he does it no fear of thread coming out of needle ! Truly genius! It goes so much faster also ! Thanks for the tips 5 * from me!
Thank you for these tutorials. I recently inherited my mother's stash. I watched her for years, decades even make beautiful works of art with cross-stitch. I had no idea where to start but this helped me understand the craft more. Thank you. I will be buying your Doctor Who pattern. It was one of her favorite shows. Nettie
Looking forward to the back stitching video too! You are really good at explaining the steps and you have a very calm voice which really helps us to follow your explanations. Great work Phil... will check out more of your videos. :-)
I would totally watch more videos on your channel about Cross-stitching! Especially if you did harder stitches because these videos are great and so easy to follow along!!!
Your amazing!!! Is there anything you can't do?... Not only are you incredibly talented, but you are also an amazing teacher. Thank you so much for your videos
I'm just getting in to cross stitch & I came across your first video of this series. You're an awesome teacher! Also, if you like D&D, give Dungeon in a Box a try, they're not quite surprises, but they're so much fun!
Thanks so much for sharing all your expertise. Yours are by far the best tutorials for beginners such as myself. Can you explain more of what happens to the short little tail you cut after the thread was all done? Do you have to stitch over it with the new strand?
I like the method of how you thread your needle. My question is, how do you thread it if your using 3 strands instead of 2. Please demonstrate if possible. Thank you
Unfortunately I don't have any tricks for an odd number of strands. For those I just thread the needle regularly and have to deal with the possibility of it falling off. That's one reason I'm not a huge fan of back stitching, lol.
Don't worry, I have many more videos on the way, I just have to get my workflow down! I'm planning on having at least one new cross stitch tutorial for next week though!
Have you tried using the loop method? Just started using your video with my son and thought this method was clever to not lose the needle, but we got a bit stuck when we didn’t have much room left to move between the needle and the cloth.
Really wish I’d found this before I started my project. I misunderstood the two strand thing and have actually been using four, and burning through my thread. Sigh. Guess my outline (which is what I’m doing now) will be very thick.
So, I done goofed. I made the entire section red and forgot to leave spaces for the black spots. Can I go over the red with black, or do I have to cut out the red first or something?
I hope someone can address my concerns. The last video he started in the middle and worked his way to the right. Is it common to cut and finish the right side and then counting the stitches frm the middle to see where we start the left side from OR am I supposed to continue from the middle (assuming I end there) and then work towards the left of the piece? I hope my question made sense 😅
I’m semi late to the party but I have recently have been trying to reteach myself how to cross stitch and I’m genuinely confused on how to end a thread. 😭
I'm a horrible person and used the wrong color to start my chart. I figured it out when I finished one whole first color and noticed it looked slightly darker than the floss I finished with (which was the correct color). What's the best way to remove one whole floss string worth of work? Thank you for your videos!!
I've done things like that, or miscounting rows, more times than Icare to admit! From my experience it isn't difficult to remove stitches, but it can be a little tedious, and sometimes frustrating. I always just use a needle and pull the floss out in reverse... Maybe a good idea for a future video!
@@PhilsNextKick Ok great, I will try to do that, thank you! That would be a great idea! Maybe 2 variations... one removing the color when it's the only one on the fabric, and one removing a single color in between other colors.
Your pattern should specify how many strands to use, but generally most cross stitches use 2 strands. The way I thread my needle with one folded strand ends up making 2 strands. Other stitches, may use a different amount of strands, for instance back stitching usually only uses one strand.
All the time! When you get close to the end of the floss you are using, just use the same technique that's in my changing colors video. Run your needle and floss under a few stitches on the back then snip it off, re-thread your needle and start right back where you left off.
I actually started when I was around 11/12, but then didn't really pick it back up until I was in college around 20 years ago. I've cross stitched on and off ever since.
I don't understand how you ran your *closing* red thread through the other stitches, as you were finishing up, *to tie it off.* 😕 Edit: I was hoping that you'd show how to tie off the thread, when finished, but you stopped the video before tying it off.
I don't actually tie it off, just run it under a few stitches and snip it. If you can get it under the stitches you just finished, then when you give it a little tug it actually tightens those stitches down on top of your floss.
I do have one on back stitching, which is possibly what you refer to as outlining, but French knots are the bane of my existence! Lol. Doesn't mean I won't do a video on French knots, but that won't make me like them any more, haha.

Thanks for continuing to watch!
Your front work is just as pretty as your back work. Amazing!
Thank you! I do try to keep it neat.

I might have missed this info, but why are you using only one strand of the thread instead of the full thread?

If you do, do another how to cross-stitch series maybe teach how to make a pixel image like Mario into a pattern?

All the time! When you get close to the end of the floss you are using, just use the same technique that's in my changing colors video. Run your needle and floss under a few stitches on the back then snip it off, re-thread your needle and start right back where you left off.
