I have an 07 Multivan 2.5 tdi 4motion 6+1 Highline. I love it. It drives excelent with and without heavy load. The engine is a masterpiece. It has almost 300.000 km and it runs like a champ. In the city it is a thirsty 14 l/100 but on the open road i swear it is the happiest car ever. Between 7 l/100 km all the way to 10 l/100km. I love it.
I love the VW! I had two of them in the past 8 years (T5). They are strong and quite slick. The interior design is less flashy than the MB but you feel that they have thought of every aspect of comfort. The seats are wider and a lot more comfortable than the MB. The draws beneath the seats are very useful and I have added a mini electric refrigerator between the 2nd row seats that is accessible to everyone on board. The van is slightly higher than the MB which is better for light off road trails when needed. There are arm rests for ALL seats including two for the driver. This is something that you do not have in the MB. On the V-class the driver has to lean over to the left and rest your arm on the door very uncomfortable for me and the back bench has non at all. One of the things that disappoints me the most with the VW is that they do not produce a long version Multivan with a "high-line" standard! Luggage room is very important to me in my business and if I insist on having the long version like the two that I have previously owned I have to compromise on the cars standard and downgrade it to the "comfort-line" which does not suite the standard of transportation I would like to offer. In other words if they would of had a long high-line version I would of bought it but they don't!
Excellent review. Well reasoned debate over choice and I agree, the cult status of the VW dictates private purchase has to be a T6, however for VIP transport the V class probably delivers on prestige status. I have just decided to purchase a VW Caravelle and feel confident that I have made right choice. Thanks guys.
Volkswagen has longer history in this van line, although it is quite expensive but for me this car cannot consider as VIP. The 2.0 liter TDI engine performance & DSG transmission are outstanding. I vote for Volkswagen.
An excellent review thank you. I like them both. I guess it depends on how much money you have. If price was not an issue, I would opt for the Merc. Greetings from England :)
Dziękuję Tomku za to fantastyczne porównanie/Thank you Tom for this fantastic comparision review. I agree, that T6 is more suitable for "multi-child" families.
I like the T6 more. I think it looks better inside and out (and it's looks will certainly age a lot better than the Mercedes). Besides, I don't think these vehicles should feel exactly the same to drive than a sedan. I really enjoy the high seating position and while it's true that it doesn't feel sporty at all, I don't think it should - it's a Transporter after all.
Nice to see Katharina again! PS: I would prefer the T6, among other things because of the better (higher) seating position in comparison to the v-class.
I bought the Vito Sport 119. Even that wipes the T6. Build quality, the lack of maintenance costs and downtime literally makes the VW look like a much cheaper equivalent.
Nice review as always Thomas! I thought to myself, alot of Volvos for being in Germany, then I realized you were actually in my country, Sweden! Nice, hope you enjoyed it :-)
I live in Germany and i would always buy a volvo before concidering any german car. The VW T6 is actually a masterpiece of failconstructions. Wish Volvo would build some Vans like this.
Thomas can you do the whole review with Mercedes V Class. I like the way you explain & go in depth of the details. As they say devil is in details & you do the best job in it.
Hi Thomas. Hm, I was gonna vote for VW but then seeing Katharina in the Mercedes.... She could help Mercedes sell many many of those vans, despite the price tag ! 😉 Very classy combo. No offence, of course!
Thomas summed it up best at the end. My opinion is, MB will never own get this segment. VW owns it but VW has the responsibility to improve the van more than they have. The next generation may have a new crowd of buyers who want more like the distronic etc. a Su roof is something MB did well in the vans and VW does not do well.
The price difference for top versions of V-Klasse (V250, 4Matic, leather, LED, etc.) and T6 Multivan (2.0TDI, DSG, 4Motion, Highline) is about 10-12% in my country. MB is more expensive than VW. Mercedes has bigger cargo space and great feature of separately open rear window, Volkswagen has easily turnable 2nd row of seats. MB service is more expensive comparing to VW. But V-Klasse is completely new car, while T6 looks like another facelift. Just too boring. So finally I vote for Mercedes-Benz. Greetings from Ukraine!
Many people I know that have the t6 with the bi turbo engines have horrendous oil consumption. This issue is not recognised buy VW although they have to change engines in some cases and this before the 100k kms. Just this puts me off.
Sadly the Multivan was not introduced in Saudi Arabia, so there is no chance but to go with V-class or for cheaper reasons most private people buy amercan big SUV's like Ford Expedition XL , GMC YUKON XL or Toyota Previa. but i personally like the V-Klasse.
If i can get them for free i'll take the V-class. If not the T6, there is about 43k of price difference which is crazy. You can get 3 Transporters instead of 1 V-class and have 9k.
Autogefühl What's the point? This comparison is unbalanced and contains misleading information about prices. A VW Multivan Comfortline starts at about 45.000 € in Germany. A comparable Mercedes V class Edition starts at 46.000 € including the 7 G tronic and metallic paint. The Multivan Highline starts at 56.000 €, the equivalent Mercedes V class Avantgarde at 51.000 €. The Multivan Business starts at 96.000 €, the V class Exklusive at 81.000 €. So price relations are completely the other way round than stated in Autogefühl. Families who can't or don't want to buy such expensive cars can go for a cheaper VW Caravelle (30.000 €) or a Mercedes Vito Tourer (24.000 €). Why doesn't Autogefühl provide such proper information? Besides its actually lower prices the Mercedes is the car with the better exterior and interior design (it's up to everyone's individual taste, of course), more space, lower fuel consumption and better driving comfort. I usually do like the Autogefühl reviews, but this time the VW glasses were too evident.
Buy the merc. A friend of mine bought the equivalent bus 8 years ago and is still going strong with over 500 thousand miles on the clock. In this time it let him down twice. No way will the V.W. last this long. And V.W. service charges are a disgrace, as my daughter owns a V.W. Tiguan thats been a big let down for=service costs/reliability/and the recall fiasco!!! I had a Mercedes c class for 8 years and it was 4 years old when I bought it, the only breakdown I had was a holed radiator. It was back on the road within 12 hours and never let Me down again. However!! great review as always guys. V.W. = OVER PRICED AND NOT THAT RELIABLE! FACT.
+Rob Trust But probably the Merc is gonna rust after 4 years and gonna break down a lot (previous Vito's are know for that) The VW has soul and such a great history. + The VW will look better and more timeless after 10 years than the Merc.
Yes indeed. Rust problems with mainly the sprinters. The vito also had early issues with rust as you have mentioned. However the guys I know who own 5/7 year old vito mini buses have not had an issue with corrosion? Maybe due to the fact Merc sorted the problem out!!!!
Thomas, would be interesting to know a little more about safety equipments that come with the cars you review (and if they do the job as intended). Some may invest more in this department, like Volvo claims, some less, and safety is always important when purchasing any car. Perhaps people would like to know more on this topic, and if you'll ever wish to add something to your reviews, this would be a spot-on subject. Have a sunny weekend! PS: Most reviewers, when comes to passive safety system simply enumerate the number of airbags. This means nothing to most people. What concerns everyone are: do they work? do they do the job? can you survive in that car in case of a collision? is it build well enough not to get squeezed like a can? can manufacturers prove their safety statements? :))) Thx for reading!
please have both car at the same time and make a comparison , this video of VW T6 is from old video and i feel i don't even wanna watch it, because i already seen it ... and thanks
1Messii hey, sorry we cannot take it at the same time always, i d love to though. A lot of ppl havent seen the video yet. But ofc its very good that you already did :) We ll soon do the next live comparison review as well, that will be Ford Kuga vs Nissan Qashqai, we ll shoot that at the end of this month!
Come on, VW is more expensive than MB, looks like a small lorry and is less prestigiuos. The interiour in a passenger and a commercial version looks the same way. Give me one reason to buy T6.
+Autogefühl yes. more expensive. Additional stuff needed for VW rise a price. MB give them as standard. Normaly. MB goes arround 50 K Euros but VW with additional stuff goes up to 70-75 K Euros. Why don't you make a compare between VW and MB cars ( basic line ). example VW Passat basic and MB let's say E class basic ( interior stuff, price...) and add to Passat all what missing ( that E class has ) and then we will see price.
Autogefühl Yes, the Volkswagen T6 is more expensive than a Mercedes V class if you compare versions with a comparable engine and equipment. You can like or dislike certain aspects of a car which are due to subjective rating. But a price list is simple math. You either should do your homework or stop being deliberately misinforming.
Aleksander Wilkowski VW transporter is shit box mate its a only super SHIT box... and cheap part they use..it means you are lower level living person. Merc is much more luxurious then VW for 500% more.
Thomas, as we don't have these vehicles in North America I base my selection on your presentation. VW T6. While the Mercedes has more luxury touches, I don't think they will last as long as the VW...nor do I think it will look as good as the T6 in 10 years. Whom is the new presenter? I feel as if she has worked in some of the earlier videos.
Sto per acquistare uno dei suddetti veicoli ,( vito 114 136 CV , t6.1 caravelle150 CV volevo sapere da persone più esperte di me , quale dei due mezzi risulta più affidabile ?
I like this van, however in the UK we are right-hand drive, i notice on the left hand drive that you are reviewing the auto gear shit the Park, Neutral, Drive and Reverse lit up parts are closest to the driver which is great for the left hand drive. On the Right hand drive however this is further away from the Driver and you have to look around the gear lever to actually see what gear you are in. If you were changing gears on the move its no simple glance and could promote unsafe practices. Volkswagan clearly hasn't given the right hand drive version adequate thought or simply they don't want to spend money on designing the right hand drive version correctly. Its a shame really this is an expensive vehicle and should be adapted properly in the UK. I asked the sales guy and he says its normal, if it were normal the left hand drive wold have the symbols on the opposite side of the gear lever, I had to recheck the video. Clearly the salesman is wrong, So is it a Volkswagan oversight? A saving of money? Or do they not want to really bother giving UK customers the same Van as European countries get? Give me your thoughts.

thanks man. We ll do that with the next update
One huge drawback the T6 has against the V-class is its height. V-class being lower than 1.9m it enters in quasi each public parking
Ah! my favourite german
