  • How to Install a Modern Ignition System - Back to Classics
This video is the first in a series of tutorials we are going to make on different technical subjects. We got a lot of requests for doing a video on how to install and adjust an electronic ignition system upgrade on a classic Ducati. That is why in this video you will see Harné discussing and explaining the set-up of an upgraded modern (digital) ignition system on a 1973 Ducati 750 Sport.
Discussed is what such an ignition system is all about? How it is wired and installed and how it is adjusted. As a bonus, you can also get some good tips on how to accurately find the engine’s top-dead-centre’ and what tools you need to do that. Be sure to contact us if you need any more help with your classic Ducati’s ignition system.

Terrific, I installed the Sachse 12 volt regulator/conversion and digital ignition to a WC 70s scrambler single, wish I had seen this first.

This is exactly what I've been looking for, thanks. I am installing on of the new OEM digital systems on a 750 GT. It calls for setting the system at 60 degrees before TDC! I'm not sure how the system calculates the firing from that point.

In process of installing this on my 860GT, thanks for posting this! I actually ordered the ignition from you guys. My bike has the Ducati ignition and not the Bosch system, any tips on pulling the flywheel? Do I need to but the specialty part by hdesa?

It's indeed best to use this tool: www.ducaticlassics.com/ducati/887130117/flywheel-puller

Does this electronic ignition not require you to set TDC on the compression stroke?
Maybe it also fires on the exhaust stroke. There is a name for that “wasted spark system”.
If that is true, I didn’t realize that Ducati used that.
I don’t believe I heard you mention that.

That's correct: this ignition system uses as 'wasted spark' on the exhaust stroke, just as the original systems that were used by Ducati
