When I see drumming like this, I think it explains why drummers die more than any other musician and turn into green goo. I don't know how you can follow the base, the keyboard, and keep your own rhythm. You truly prove that good drumming is about creativity and finesse than it is about speed or loudness.
at first, this song sounded so weird to me, because of this rhythm so hard to understand and to digest... but then I insisted, and now I love it, and the whole album as well! I'm not a musician nor drummer, but this looks really complex to play! amazing job, Leo!
Check out the Restless Boy play through! Im a drummer and this one seems easy in comparison. 🤣 Still, this is a great song and excellent complex drumming!

Amazing work. It's all buried in the album version (and that's not a criticism at all) so it's good to have a chance to hear Leo's work more clearly. And as always, he did an amazing work.

In the intro, the synth pattern seems to be based on a count of 14, straying from and returning back to the count. The song is in triplet feel so each count is divided by 3. I heard the following (1 = 1 count, | = pattern dividers): *14 | 10 + 11/3 | 1/3 + 16 | 8 + 11/3 | 1/3 + verse...* (Mathed together: 14 | 13+2/3 | 16+1/3 | 11+2/3 | 1/3 + verse...) As you can see, the 2nd and 4th synth patterns end with a fast triplet 11-thingy ("Dun dun du-dun dun dun" or 2+2+1+2+2+2 = 11). The 3rd pattern and the verse have a slow start where the first synth note is 1/3 longer (4/3 instead of 3/3 = 1), which compensates for the previous patterns cutting 1/3 short. So without the kooky 1/3 false starts, it would be 14 | 14 | 16 | 12. 16 + 12 = 14 + 14, and more importantly you can hear Leo kinda ignoring the different pattern division there anyway. My musical vocabulary isn't very good so if you didn't understand, any tips on how to explain it more clearly are appreciated. Just an amateur home drummer with a piano background.
Intro, verse and first chorus are in 7 with a triplet feel in the kick. Synth is in 4 for three measures, then follows hi hat to finish the grouping. The reason it sounds weird is because the synth adjusts you to 4/4, and then once the phrase finishes, it sounds like the downbeat is 1/16th early
As a new fan to the band, I'm ashamed it took me so long to find PoS. Panther is an absolute masterpiece, and as an amateur drummer, I always latch onto the astounding and creative drumming all throughout the album. It's nice to hear you doing your thing here Leo! Thank you for the inspiration!

Jake Staffin there’s a huge difference in style between Pain of Salvation and The Sea Within, but it’s a worthwhile trip to taste everything Pain of Salvation and Daniel have offered up
PoS had a spree of albums in their early career that are all some of the best prog albums ever made! And Daniel's voice back then was next-level impressive. A range larger than 5 octaves.
Leo you make everything look so simple! Please provide a score for this. I can't figure out the time signature for the life of me and I'm usually pretty good at that. You always do so much with a simple set (Ala Dream Theater) and your skill is so mind blowing.
Which part is giving you the most trouble? It's in slow 7/8 with a subdivision of triplets. So make sure can feel all 7 triplets in a row clearly through all the cymbal accents. The "hiccups" that happens every 2 bars or so are just strong accents on the last part of the triplet on either the 4th or 7th beat of the bar. When it happens at the end of the bar (end of the 7th triplet) it is followed by an empty downbeat on one. That rest on 1 right after the upbeat of 7 might be throwing you off.
Haha :) Well I’ve actually been working out for almost 8 years, but the thing is it never really shows until your body fat percentage drops considerably! :)
Leo, to not get lost in the rhythm, is it better first play the drum/snare pattern (sextuplet subdivision) and then add the 8th cymbal line "over" or think in all parts together (I figure out a 7/8 time signature)?
For me switching to a 7/8 there would be super strange as it would imply a new tempo that has nothing to do with the previous one... So I guess it’s “just” a matter of getting used to the subdivision, practice groups with a metronomes, alternate 4 16th with quintuplet and then septuplets until it becomes natural... But be aware that it could take years... :D
I just don't understand why you edited the videos. In my opinion, an amazing drummer like Leo should be allowed to shine in real time. Anyway, very fun to watch and still listen to some of my favourite music.
Holy crap! This is amazing! I was driven to decipher and transcribe the intro: it's 3 bars of 21/8 + a bar of 18/8. Or you could say 3x 7/4 + 6/4 with triplets. Transcription here: gist.github.com/japgolly/94242805800d8dc17c4eef55ec1550d6 That's so creative and groovy. I'm in awe.
I don't get it..is it supposed to sound like a groove with a "limp" up until 3:57 or is that just me who doesn't cpmprehend this complex rhythm? Like serious, this is my 3rd listen and i'm trying but it just feels so odd up until that point
Try counting in groups of 7 non-stop along to the same speed of that synth in the intro (or just follow the hi-hat). Once you find the steady beat don't change the speed no matter what the accents are doing around it. You will notice everything revolves around 7 perfectly steady beats no matter what. @@Proghead88 Thank you so much for this explanation! I never expected such a deep analysis but thanks to you i can now enjpy the song as much as everyone else! :D
Proghead88 I am pretty sure the verses are alternating bars of 7 and 8 but the triplets still as you explained. If you count the entire thing in 7.. then you get really weird syncopated accents, if you alternate 7 and 8 each bar the accents stay in the same beats
This is my favourite song on the album. It does sound somewhat similar rhythmically to Leprous' song Illuminate, but I'm not a musician so I may be just having the wrong impression.
Some kind of polymeter with 5/16s in 3/4 with probably 7/8 alterations in the outer time. No idea though, it's a difficult rhythm to work out, even compared to Meshuggah's most complex rhythms

In the intro, the synth pattern seems to be based on a count of 14, straying from and returning back to the count. The song is in triplet feel so each count is divided by 3. I heard the following (1 = 1 count, | = pattern dividers):
