Henry’s been really good for a really long time. I got to meet him after he did a set at a private event & got to chat with him for a good while. He’s a solid guy & gave me some Newlywed advice that has stuck with me for over a dozen years. sadly, this was just weeks after he lost his pal Hedberg & told me a few stories that I promised not to share. I keep up with Henry’s touring schedule & see him whenever he’s close. he remembers me by name every time. I’ve seen him play 6-7 shows & he’s Killed every set, every time.

Henry was one of my heroes. Being a Korean kid in a white world, Henry was someone I could aspire to. I wasn’t accepted by my Korean brethren, not accepted by the white kids, not accepted by the brown kids… so TV was my safe place. Over time, I just found the right people but a PITA to be an Asian in a non-Asian country.

It might seem funny to some, someone asking an Asian if they are Indian but here is what happened to my wife and I. In the 80's we lived near the Mescalero Apache in New Mexico. While going up to Cloud Croft we stopped at the store that was about half way up. Looking through the store a Mescalero asked the wife, a native of downtown Tokyo, Japan, what tribe she was. The wife spoke limited English at the time, but replied " Edo Ko ". It took about five minutes to explain that she was Japanese, despite her western shirt, jeans, boots and braided hair. No body got mad and had a good day looking around.

We moved to this town in Indiana close to where my husband found work, expressly for educational opportunity and so that our kids wouldn't be asked every whipstitch if they were adopted if only one of their parents were with them.
I grew up in Alaska and while my town was sufficiently close to the 1930s federal incentive program to bring Dust Bowl farmers to the area from Minnesota, North Dakota, etc, among the original inhabitants there were several military bases nearby, a lot of educators, and missionary transplants, so in the balance there was the possibility that no one relatively felt 'out of place'.
Different story when moved to Wyoming, but close to state college and border with northern Colorado (Denver) and also that year we lived in Fargo where older son was asked by his clueless third grade teacher to help acclimate and interpret for a new Korean girl student. (Arriving to LA for a short stay in the Japanese neighborhood, my future husband at the BMV was asked if he was Mexican, yet when he took a Greyhound out to Wyoming and told the driver he needed to make a transfer in Cheyenne, was told the bus didn't go to China.)
So this older child attended his friend's Bar Mitzvah, was one of best men at his friend's traditional Hindu wedding, and hung around with kids from Vietnam, the Phillipines, Egypt, as well as the other kids crazy about computers and games.
Younger son has pretty much only vicarious experience growing up in this college town which is has one of the largest foreign student bodies in USA. That has its disadvantages, but analogously to Mr Cho's experience, older son had different upbringing than younger son who had serious expectations of maintaining model American status among his peers. Some time, I think, culture will change if we can get past some of the artificial political divisions in this country.
