Bob cats scream too just like a woman out here in my woods. So do cougars and mountain lions and panthers in my woods. Even though I know what it is it still freaks me out at night when I’m carrying in wood and I hear that blood curdling scream.

There was a story on Mr. Nightmare where a bunch of friends were camping, and they kept hearing this blood-curdling scream coming from the woods, which was getting closer, until it was like 15 feet away from their campsite, at which point they booked it, not even gathering up their things. They never found out what made the noise, but knowing what I know now, a hundred bucks says it was just a fox.

It was probably the most horrifying experience of my life.
I can imagine. The first time I heard it I had no idea what it was. I could hear two or three calling to each other. I took a guess and googled it to learn that it was a fox. Sounds like a child screaming.

I live in a small village in the UK, surrounded by countryside and am no stranger to foxes. We actually had a male and female living in thick undergrowth less than 20 metres from our house. I frequently heard noises but not that terrifying scream. She had 4 cubs and I watched the male go out to forage for food to bring back to the den for his family. This was such a delight to witness.
Late last night I was putting my dog's leash on to take him for his last walk before bed. I heard that scream 5 times and became too scared to go out. It crossed my mind that it could be a fox but I'd never heard that chilling scream. I called my son who still lives at home to come with us and sure enough, it was standing at the end of our drive screaming.

When I was a kid I woke up in the dead of night to a woman screaming “No! No! Help!” Right outside my window. I ran to my parents room and woke my dad up who confidently and grumpily said “it’s just a fox”. Right as he finished saying this, a shriek came from under his bedroom window and he jumped up and went “maybe not..”. He jumped up thinking someone was on our porch. He was so unsure he called the cops, who flat out said it wasn’t a fox and were like “foxes don’t say “help”. They parked their patrol cars by the woods, shining their headlights in and yelling for this woman to come out. One of them kinda construed this idea in his head that she must’ve been a domestic violence victim that ran all the way to our farmhouse for help and ran off into the woods again. All the sudden we see something dash out of the field and..sure enough.. it was a fox.

They make it when they have babies. The pair in our area have started doing it now that the babies are big enough to wander.
It is a contact call. Literally "Hey!". If a parent does it then the kits come to them and yip in response. If a Vixen does it then usually any males in the area will do it back and come her way.

Story time: So it’s New Year’s Eve, I have three dogs. Our gate broke during Florence and our dogs are always getting out. So I’m sitting at the dining room table and notice that the door is 1/4 of the way open. I get really scared that my dogs got out and I would have to chase them down at 11:46 pm. So I go outside and I’m calling my dogs name and stepping in lord knows what I’m bare feet. As I’m going inside to check if they are inside realizing my dogs aren’t outside, I hear a scream that sounds like a freaking skin walker . Thanks to this video I can now know in peace there is some wild fox roaming the woods.

That's it! Thanks for posting this. I woke up in the middle of the night from a fight between a big housecat and a fox apparently. It was dark and I couldn't see well, but the animal was about as big as a cat and made this exact sound. I wasn't thinking it couldn't be another cat.
A fox chased my cat one evening. My cat wasn't fazed at all. I didn't think they would tangle with a cat. There is plenty of easier prey. Still not taking any chances and bringing him in a little earlier.

Thanks for posting this. We were awoken in the middle of the night by these types of screams and were convinced an animal was in its death throes caught in a trap. We had lurid visions in our heads which were very troubling. Glad to learn it was just a healthy animal doing its thing.

Yes! Same! I started hearing this in the middle of the night where I’ve lived for ten years in urban outskirts suburban wooded semi-rural highway area. I feared it was something dying from being hit or from another animal. And it’s already a distressful and alarming sound…. but then I heard it several nights in a row and was like “these things can’t be dying that much” 😅 So I inquired about it and am very reassured and happy that it is indeed a healthy animal sound. Guess foxes have moved into the neighborhood. 🦊🥰

I heard a fox make that sound when I was at my grandparent's house. It sounded like a screaming woman to me. I got scared. But seeing a fox making that sound while being recorded on a camera, makes it REALLY cute. I, like, want to HUG it. XD
I grew up in the country and we didn’t know we had a bobcat in the area until we saw a fox chasing it literal wailing like it’s heart was broken. We later found out the bobcat had found the fox’s kits and killed them all. Most eerie sound I’ve ever heard…heart-wrenching…
That fox might've seen you (the cameraman) as a threat or predator, so it might've made that alarm bark to try and warn your pet dog of the danger.
