I heard somewhere that the first time he broke the 4th wall was by mistake, but everyone laughed so much they decided to keep it and it became his signature
Lol Absolutely brilliant the way the show feature Roper's epic smile. I always looked forward to it. But one thing though, Mrs. Roper always gave as good as she got. It was an epic burn fest every time they went at it.
Gary Shandling gets so much credit for breaking the fourth wall. But Mr. Fell already had that thing ready to crumble with his knowing smile to the audience.
Roper !! When I was a kid, I couldn't wait 'till he did that. I was 10 when Three's Company started & I wasn't (for obvious reasons, back then anyway...) allowed to watch this. I had to sneak it on Tuesday nights (if memory serves, TC aired originally on Tuesdays on ABC.) Roper still cracks me up...
Chris Ronson thanks for enjoying it Chris. It was fun putting it together. I recorded those clips on my iPhone for several weeks and one day I decided to put this little gem together. Great to know there are other Roper fans out there. We are a dying breed my friend ✌🏻
I thought one of the golden rules of acting is that you never break the 4th wall...but in some of these, the camera zooms in and waits for the punch line and let's him have it.Well done regan Kelly!!!
He was so mean to her ( lol ) but it was all in good humor. I laugh everytime when they zoom in on him and he is laughing, so funny. Him and Audra were so good together. Did you know Mr Fell was a tailguner in WW2 on a B25 I think.
I named my turtle Stanley, after Mr.Roper... that face though.. lol Also a lot of people forget to realize how perfect Helen was to be on the butt end of his jokes.. any other woman and it just wouldnt be as funny.. she was the perfect victim.. “oh stanley”
We had an incredible dubbing actress doing Helen's voice in Brazil, in Portuguese. Absolutely great, especially the way she pronounced the famous "Staaaaaaanley".
I think in showbiz lingo this is called "breaking the fourth wall" when Mr Roper looks over and grins directly at his laughing audience. Probably done in some other sitcoms but done often in this one. It must have been cool to be in the studio audience, I imagine one of the cameras was ready to zoom in on Roper's smile.
I love this couples so much. I also wish they were still alive. But I love Three's company so much. But all my favorites are dead but I wish they were still alive. All I can say poor me.
Maybe the funniest moments in TV history. I honestly can't think of any show that broke the 4th wall in quite this way. Stanley was the only one who ever did it on the show. I know George Burns and Garry Shandling did, but that was part of the whole conceit of their shows. Sorry, but this is genius, in its way.
I’m noticed it too often in reruns of threes company… That had to be written in his contract. Because every time he did it, they kind of focus real hard on it.
Normal Fell did this partly in an attempt to appear more light-hearted than the darker humorless landlord he had played in the 1967 film "The Graduate".
I was about 12 when they were on and didn't totally understand why my father laughed so hard at him! Lol. "I don't know, how long have we been married?" ROFL.
Yo That Is So Funny Mr Roper Insults His Wife Mrs Roper Does Not Mind That Makes It More Funny I Really Love This Show It Ran For 174 Episodes The Ropers Is Twice As Funny Like Three's Company Always Funny I Said Everything What I Needed To Say Post The Ropers Episodes Please Yeah Me The Jamster Peace!
So I was just cappin on the wife a bit and she got a lil mad and I gave her that roper smile which made me have to look for this on yt and now my stomach hurts from laughing so hard
This really highlights how absolutely ridiculous their relationship was, exactly the same as Al and Peggy. Helen wanted romance from Stanley that he wouldn't give and sex from Stanley that he didnt want to engage in. Which is ridiculous since Stanley was old and not attractive. Why would she want sex from him? Then, as these clips show, he insulted her repeatedly, yet she still wanted to have intimacy with him. That is ridiculous. She also acted like she didn't understand why he didn't want to have sex with her, and he made it very clear time and again he didn't find her attractive. He straight up called her faded and drab to her face. As bad as their relationship was, it is ridiculous they were still together. Stanley treated her poorly, insulted her appearance repeatedly, was a cheapskate and took her for granted. They argued and attacked each other on a regular basis and had mutual contempt for one another, like when Stanley laughed at the notion that she had any value sufficient to get a job.
As ridiculous as this may seem, I know plenty of boomers & relatives who have this kind of relationship. “Yes they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness but it’s better than drinking alone”
I forgot about this show, was kid when the reruns played. I see where they got the inspiration Married with children came from. Identical, Helen as Peggy the sex feen and Mr. Robert as AL as the apposite of their wives probably suffering from erectile dysfunction. Peggy was sexy tho.
Whoever thought of doing the close up shot of his laugh is genius
That was a big secret ingredient to the success of the show
He's looking at the audience, breaking the 4th wall
@@BroscoWankston that's it!! thanks. i always thought it was breaking the 4th camera or something ha
I heard somewhere that the first time he broke the 4th wall was by mistake, but everyone laughed so much they decided to keep it and it became his signature
oh that’s a wonderful anecdote. I am so glad they decided to keep it in. It’s something I look forward to every episode he does it and I always laugh.
Norman Fell was a national treasure.
Definitely Mr. Roper's signature trademark...for sure!!! R.I.P. Norman Fell!
He does it such a way, where he doesn’t look directly at the camera - but just close enough
When he laughs at the camera it's make it even more funnier
Laughter is contagious. His character is cold and grumpy. But when he crushes the 4th wall, its his own reaction to his jokes that makes this classic.
Al Bundy before Al Bundy
My favorite TV couple of all time.........
What an amazing actor, Norman Fell
Never gets old.
There is absolutely no possibility that this will not always be very, very funny. Cracked me up when I was 11, as it has for the 45 years since then.
Now we know where Al and Peggy Bundy came from.
That's what I was thinking lol
I was looking for a compilation of Mr. Roper laughing at the camera and breaking the fourth wall so thanks so much for uploading this!! ❤😂
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
2:49 Helen: it's just a blob. Stanley: are you kidding me I recognize your mother any place.😄
Genius! I seem to remember that Mrs Roper actually pulled one off at some point and everyone went wild as it was so unexpected.
I used to die laughing when he did that! I still do!!
Ditto!
Nothing was as funny as him with his hand on his waist and doing the bell ringing Tinkerbell to Jack.
Me too. Its crazy.
Lol Absolutely brilliant the way the show feature Roper's epic smile. I always looked forward to it. But one thing though, Mrs. Roper always gave as good as she got. It was an epic burn fest every time they went at it.
RIP Audrey
I don't know what's funnier, his jokes or his reaction haha
Don't you think Mr Roper was kinda the original AL Bundy with his snarky remarks?🤣🤣
Roper was the best!! Cracked me up as a kid.
Gary Shandling gets so much credit for breaking the fourth wall. But Mr. Fell already had that thing ready to crumble with his knowing smile to the audience.
It's very different though. Gary did it the right way because the show was presented as meta. Norman Fell doing it isn't right... it changes the show.
No. It made the show. It was hilarious.
Same here!! 10 years old and had to sneak watching it on Tuesday nights! 🤣
You were born in 1967?
Needed this smile before work, thank you for this👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it. The Ropers are the best.
that STILL makes me laugh!!
Thanks for making this compilation! I bust a gut every time he insults Helen and laughs at his own joke into the camera. Awesome!
Chris Ronson thanks for enjoying it Chris. It was fun putting it together. I recorded those clips on my iPhone for several weeks and one day I decided to put this little gem together. Great to know there are other Roper fans out there. We are a dying breed my friend ✌🏻
Prototype Al Bundy
What an accurate statement
Bundy is roper 2.0!
I love it!!! Its 2021 and I'm watching the Ropers!!!
2024 and watching
Norman Fell's smile after a wisecrack I thought was the funniest part of the show. It always got me to laugh.
I thought one of the golden rules of acting is that you never break the 4th wall...but in some of these, the camera zooms in and waits for the punch line and let's him have it.Well done regan Kelly!!!
The Rope face we used to say 😂
The Ropers were this show`s best asset, like Flo was to the show Alice.
Stomach is killing me laughing so much. Thanks for this blast from the past.
dudefromtherock thanks for the comment! Sorry the sound is so low. I recorded all these clips on my phone
Trevor you are very welcome. I’m realizing just how many Stanley Roper fans that are still around 👌🏻
Great post. Mr. Roper was a trip!!!
Cleon Magabeefy thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it
That smile breaks the 4th wall.
he was one cool guy
Look up pics of Andra Lindley in her younger years! She was a hottie!
I always love it when he breaks the 4th wall
I love his smiles, it kills me,
KMSL 😂😂😂😂
His smile was beautiful ...love to see it every time !
He was so mean to her ( lol ) but it was all in good humor. I laugh everytime when they zoom in on him and he is laughing, so funny. Him and Audra were so good together. Did you know Mr Fell was a tailguner in WW2 on a B25 I think.
These clips are GOLD..thank you for sharing..my fave TVShow back in the day👍💯💣
Thanks Richard!
I named my turtle Stanley, after Mr.Roper... that face though.. lol
Also a lot of people forget to realize how perfect Helen was to be on the butt end of his jokes.. any other woman and it just wouldnt be as funny.. she was the perfect victim.. “oh stanley”
She sets it up so perfectly, they have great timing together 😂
Very Underrated TV Couples!!!!
So true!! I also wish their own show would have gone a few more seasons.
That grin of Stanley Roper's Kills me, I always liked him better than Ralph furley
Don Knotts, no way. It's not his fault.
jack benny started that he added the smile
thanks, I never knew that!
We had an incredible dubbing actress doing Helen's voice in Brazil, in Portuguese. Absolutely great, especially the way she pronounced the famous "Staaaaaaanley".
Loved mr roper

After 34 years of marriage my wife now calls me Stanley ! I wonder why ?
(Norman Fell)Stanley Roper,Legend!
God Rest his soul
A prelude to Al Bundy. Lol
I'm Mister Roper's Smile and I approved this message. LOL.
I love the one at 1:27 He didn't even say anything it was too easy.
I agree. Usually they take another shot, and the camera zooms in. In that one, he simply sneaks a sly smile to the audience. Brilliant.
Dare I say when Mr Roper cracked these jokes on Mrs Roper , these were the funniest moments in all of TV history? It was and still is for me.
I figured this must exist. Never been more pleased with RUclips
Thank you! It was fun to put together. Sorry for the shitty audio. I recorded all the clips on my phone over the course of about 6 months
@@regankelly6474 I love that someone else saw the humor in the Roper smile. Classic.
I love this couples so much. I also wish they were still alive. But I love Three's company so much. But all my favorites are dead but I wish they were still alive. All I can say poor me.
2:49 Helen: it's just a blob. Stanley: don't fool me I recognize your mother any place.

Giving you internet hugs for making this compilation. Awesome!
TheSpogNYC thank you...hugs received ✌🏻

Loved it my other favorite Is when he does the tinkerbell lmao
The OG 4TH wall breaker. Legendary!
Audra Lindley was actually very attractive. They really frumped her up for this role.
I read that the first time Norman did this, it was adlibed
Normal Fell did this partly in an attempt to appear more light-hearted than the darker humorless landlord he had played in the 1967 film "The Graduate".
AWESOME. so much better than Furley
Eric Bomberger I agree totally
Apparently breaking the 4th wall was not scripted and Norman improvised it each time.
Got to love Norman Fell RIP
He is deeply missed
Stanley is gold!😂❤
i do it from time to time. i call it pulling a roper
This is where jim from the office got influenced
How adorable was this man, I ask ya? 😅
I was about 12 when they were on and didn't totally understand why my father laughed so hard at him! Lol. "I don't know, how long have we been married?" ROFL.
Jack says how does it feel to be married that long ? It gets easier !
Roper > Furley
Yo That Is So Funny Mr Roper Insults His Wife Mrs Roper Does Not Mind That Makes It More Funny I Really
Love This Show It Ran For 174 Episodes The Ropers Is Twice As Funny Like Three's Company Always Funny
I Said Everything What I Needed To Say Post The Ropers Episodes Please Yeah Me The Jamster Peace!
Just imagine and Stanley Roper and Al Bundy along with their wives were on the same show together!
Dang that was scary. When I was a kid it was funny
Why won't someone put ALL these episodes on youtube ?
So I was just cappin on the wife a bit and she got a lil mad and I gave her that roper smile which made me have to look for this on yt and now my stomach hurts from laughing so hard
best one starts at 1:20!!
100% correct
Before there was Al and Peggy Bundy there was Stanley and Helen Roper
ropers like a dusty rag doll
They should have never done the spin off show.
Lol killer 😂😂😂
Hilarious
This is abusive even for those times 😂
BREQAKING THE fOURTH WALL BEFORE IT WAS COOL
Christ, the volume is crazy low.
Lol
He was verbally abusive.
thanks i'm woke now
Lol😁😀😄😃

“Yes they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness but it’s better than drinking alone”
🤣🤣🤣🤣
hhahahhahaha
🤣
I never liked it as a kid. Still don't. It changes everything because he's breaking the 4th wall.
I forgot about this show, was kid when the reruns played. I see where they got the inspiration Married with children came from. Identical, Helen as Peggy the sex feen and Mr. Robert as AL as the apposite of their wives probably suffering from erectile dysfunction. Peggy was sexy tho.
