- We took a trip to Scotland and spent two days exploring Edinburgh. Scotland is one of our favourite places to travel and no matter how many times we visit this beautiful Scottish capital city, there are always new things to do and see. Edinburgh has so much to offer!
On this Scotland trip, we walk up Arthur’s seat to see some incredible views over Edinburgh. If you are staying in the city centre of Edinburgh, I suggest walking to the start of the hike as you can see more of the city and the various neighbourhoods. Depending on the route, the walk up to Arthur’s seat is fairly gentle hike and makes for an incredible day out in Edinburgh. It’s one of the best places to visit in Edinburgh for spectacular views. Later on we take a walk around the many steps of Edinburgh, visiting St Giles Cathedral, Heart of Midlothian Mosaic, see some bagpipes, and eat a lot of great food.
If you are travelling to the UK, Scotland is an absolute must visit. The nature, culture and history of Scotland is incredible and Edinburgh is a fantastic cultural hub to start off your journey. I hope my Scotland playlist can act as a helpful travel guide and inspiration as you explore this magnificent country.

I stayed in new town,Edinburgh about one year to learn English more than twenty years ago so nostalgic but I had never gone to Arthur’s seat 😅 cheers P.S. most classmates were Swiss German in the school.

I enjoyed this city thru your videos, it's really beautiful ancient city in both architectures and the nature.
You are correct in the architectural comparison of Edinburgh and Kiev... I've been to Scotland multiple times (Edinburgh being my favorite city to visit)... and my son was born in Poltava and we went to the Ukraine and it's capital to finalize his adoption. There are AMAZING and striking similarities between the two cities in it's layout and building designs. My real concern for Kiev now is that the ancient and beautiful city will not be completely destroyed with the ongoing conflict.

Your Edinburgh videos are well done and enjoyable. Thank you.
The heart onto which people spit is the Heart of Midlothian. Here for about 400 years stood the Old Tollbooth, a large building that pretty much blocked the High Street (Royal Mile). This served several civic functions including that of jail. There were also hangings here and down in the nearby Grassmarket. Because it was associated with such negativity, when the building was demolished, the heart was created so the citizens could express their disgust and disrespect by spitting on it.
Also, look at the cobbles on the street next to it. You will see brass bars set into the stonework. These mark the outline of the Old Tollbooth. (There is another Old Tollbooth in the lower part of the High Street - it has a tower with a clock and house a pub.)
Under the cobbled car park of St. Giles Cathedral, which is all part of his immediate area, there is the grave of John Knox, the religious reformist who founded the Presbyterian Church. His house is a much-celebrated attraction a bit further down the High Street. And just meters beyond it once stood a gateway that was another tollbooth - the Netherbow Port, which was the principal gateway in and out of Edinburgh. It was known as 'the world's end', as many people never ventured to the other side - it was the end of their world. There is a pub, the World's End, in that area that serves to remind us of that history. This 'end' was because Edinburgh was originally just the upper part of the street (there was no New Town at the time), with the lower end being the Canongate, which was associated with Holyrood Abbey (Holyrood = Holy Cross) at the bottom of the hill. To accommodate its ministers and guests, adjacent buildings were constructed. These eventually evolved into Holyrood Palace. The Abbey, despite efforts over the centuries to correct its problems, collapsed due to poor construction.
The tollbooths were like borders, so tolls were collected when moving from one neighbourhood into the other. Also, an Edinburgh criminal who could get past the Netherbow Port into the Canongate was a free person. At the time, there was just the High Street, there were no side streets as such until the mid 1800s. All the 'streets' were closes, which are likely alleyways. These housed shops and businesses. Today there are about 82 remaining, with the Real Mary King's Close - across from St. Giles Cathedral and a public attraction - recreates life in a close back in those days.
Interestingly, during the 1970s, the underground vaults - the 'town under the ground' - were used by rock bands as rehearsal space.
