A bit of trivia. They were playing a show later that evening in Birmingham and things got delayed and supposedly almost started a riot when it was announced that the show had been delayed. Iron Maiden was the opening act having just recently released their first album.

Totp had a general rule that performances were with playback. They released the rule in the 70s somewhat where the vocals could be live but instruments were mimed.
A few exceptions were made, Maiden, Quo and The Who played fully live, but it was rare they allowed it

When was this? As you can see on the video of the song "United" (about the same time, 1980) Rob has short hair. In this song he has long hair. When did Rob have long hair and when did he cut it? Is this video-recording done before or after the video recording of "United"? Anyone?
It was recorded before United. He cut it in between the release of Living after Midnight and United
Rob had a mop top hairdo from late 1979 until about mid 1980. Didn’t get long again til ‘85-‘86

Gotta admit, all 3 singles from British Steel, played on the top of the pops ( ; ) ), kinda were a tad embarrassing. Give that this was watched by millions in the UK, and, that i was well versed with earlier stuff, these 'cheesy' singles were a little hard to watch.
LAM was pretty catchy granted, but British Steel was soured for me.
Hell, i even liked the 2 singles played on this show from the Killing Machine album!
Mind you, apart from Rapid Fire, and the superb Steeler, i never took to British Steel at all.

It was normal for artists on Top of the Pops to mime their performances. Some (as is the case with Judas here) couldn't be bothered to do it properly, so they did whatever they liked :D
