Being from the southern USA, I've encountered a few bears thru the decades. But this May we encountered one outside our Airstream near Asheville NC. While in Nashville get a doughnut from 5 daughters bakery, walk Broadway & enjoy the music. Glad I stumbled across your vlog ~ (This year we walked the AT in Maine, Virginia , NC & GA. and took a tour of DC at night ) Welcome to the US !
Welcome to Southeast USA! I grew up exploring all around the mountains of SC, NC, GA, and TN. There are SO MANY hidden gems nestled in these hills with the best parts beginning where the pavements end. The best trails are the least travelled in a lot of places. Beautiful mountain rivers and lakes and the roads that take you there all stand a good chance of running in all directions. There are also a wide mix of cultures around that can be confusing to even many of us locals. Some respect the beauty and nature to enjoy it, and some do not. There is a lot of unrecorded history in these hills. It’s a world of interesting contradictions and always has been. I travel all over the USA, much preferred by driving of course, with the intent to explore new areas in between scheduled events. I always come back to explore the hidden, and perhaps secret, backwoods of Southern Appalachia; where one can really feel the heartbeat of the earth. I’m glad I stumbled onto your channel a few weeks ago. Keep going and sharing! I vibe with your adventure.
Thank you for sharing there really is so much to see and walk I wish I could stay longer than I am but this time I’ll be happy if I get a small glimpse of these little pockets around the US! Thank you for watching ☺️
You guys are bringing back wonderful memories of hiking the AT in the 70's and all my trips to New England. I think bear spray is a little extreme for most black bears. Save it for western grizzly country. Thanks for wonderful memories. And your pup is awesome. Cheers.
Many years ago my old boss and his wife were out deer hunting each in a different deer stand and long before cellphones. Well a black bear started climbing the tree the wife was on until the barrel of the gun was at the bear's head. She said, " Go back down so I don't have to sh@@t you" to the bear. it finally went back down. But you gotta understand that black bears will eat people. NO WAY? Yes way!! The latest example was Patrice Miller. Go look it up. It is unwise and unsavory of you to give such bad advice to foreigners when you know better. If you want to dance a jig in front of a bear without bear spray then knock yourself out. For them, wisdom dictates that it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
I enjoy your vlogs…and find it fascinating to see our country through the eyes of a visitor. You make these entries enjoyable. But, if do keep coming back for the Welsh Terrier. That was my family dog as a young boy and we were best buddies. My father was from Scotland so as you might guess…my buddies name was Bobby. I’m retired now and still miss him. Such a fabulous part of the family.
Awwww that’s so nice to read and Edie really is the star of the show isn’t she! I love it when people watch for her I’m a very proud dog mom! She’s the best roadtrip buddy and everyone out here thinks she’s an airdale puppy lots of people haven’t even heard or a welsh terrier! Thanks for sharing and for watching ☺️
Hi there beautiful travelers. I feel your excitement this week! A small taste of the trail AND bears!! Wow. I don't know what I would do if it were me, I am sure you will be fine. Edie certainly would have sensed not to play with a bear!! She is the sweetest water baby ever! You found some lovely shady places to get out of the heat, and wonderful cool water to enjoy. The scenery is so beautiful, you will be able to watch your videos of this special time of your lives - much better than the snapshots of old! It would be very easy to want to fall in love with this lifestyle. I say to anyone - go for it if you are able. Those deer were so cute. More bears to end this episode - can't wait for the next one!!! Take care 😊❤👩🦽
Hey Annie, so lovely to hear from you as always we are still amazed by the bear sightings! Tennessee is such an incredible state it has so much to offer we definitely have a change of scenery in the next video! It was a really special week seeing bears and being on the trail one of my favourites so far ☺️💚
Wow! What a treat I loved your genuine excitement seeing the bears for the first time! I have had a few bear encounters but I live in North Carolina so that's cheating. Thank you for a wonderful vlog. Safe travels.
Enjoyed your video. Felt like I was on the trip with you. Enjoyed seeing those gorgeous Smoky Mountains. That sunset was priceless! I think Demi has a great voice for narrating these videos. It's a nice, professional sounding voice and the English accent just adds greatly to it. I live in New Hampshire so I enjoyed watching your other video where you went through Maine and New Hampshire. I've actually never been on the Kancamagus highway. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, keep enjoying your trip and safe travels.
Ahhh love that comment thank you so much I really enjoy making the videos so it’s amazing that someone enjoys watching them ☺️ you need to get on the Kancamagus high way 😆 although so much of NH is beautiful I get that it’s not the only ice place I absolutely loved driving through Crawford notch!
You got some beautiful shots of the wildlife and the fog. This is when the Bears will start putting on weight. He did look a little skinny, but he still has a few months that he’ll pack it on.
Ahhh I see I wondered if it was smaller because perhaps it was a female I wasn’t sure it just looked thin, we saw so many beautiful animals the bears are more beautiful in real life too!
And speaking as a former Londoner who moved to the US in 1999 ( and apart from an couple of extended stays) I've lived here since & I think it's great u are traveling the country& experiencing it's beauty, but I would most def remind u the country does have some seriously dangerous Wild life, ( Moose,Bears,Wolf's up North,Coyotes,Mountain Lion & some other stuff, only locals talk about( reluctantly) So if u stay Vigilant& u should have something to arm urself with, remember many Americans will have some kind of Gun,Rifle or shotgun for emergency use with them.. ( And obviously u can't have that) But if u see a Hardwear Store, try& purchase some Bear Spray, one of those noisy horn things,a Hatchet.,Something. And u might think this sounds extreme or Alarmist, but it's being realistic..But that aside enjoy ur trip.
Thank you such a lovely comment I don’t know why either haha I’m just kidding I’m grateful and always in shock that anyone even watches my videos apart from family and friends 😆
Glad to hear you are stopping to 'smell the roses' or watch the magnolias bloom so to speak. Hey , the Appy Trail , epic. This trip is gonna take decades ... lol Enjoy.
I’m a Brit expat now in Canada, when it comes to black bears they are very inquisitive and mostly not dangerous. They have incredible sense of smell and can smell food from large distances. If you see one remain calm and retreat slowly but keep your eyes on them. Only use bear spray when absolutely necessary as most of the time it’s not needed. Now when it comes to brown bears 🐻 it’s another thing. But anyway loving your adventure thanks for sharing.
I'm more impressed by the apparently 'albino' squirrel than the black bears! Also all the bears looked really thin, not a good sign. But the winters are not as cold there as in Canada. Black bears are normally 'shy' and avoid humans (if they haven't been habituated to humans). They like food, but they usually don't like to fight for it. In Québec, there is a black bear attack once every 3-4 years, but we rarely get the conditions of the attack: bear surprised, 'defending' a cub, sick or injured... As far as I can remember, there is no instance of a black bear killing a human for food.
I looked into the white squirrel after I saw it and it turns out it wasn’t albino because it didn’t have red eyes however there is another condition that is very rare and effects some animals that makes them all white this guy has black eyes so just a white squirrel!
Hi…not sure if you have much time to read books but this book ……Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail ….will make you fall in love with the trail even more
Love your content. You all do a great job with your videos. What park did you stay at in the DC area? We did a 2 month summer road trip which included the DC area and stayed at a Forest Service camping area called Greenbelt Park ($10/night with our Nat. Park Service pass, no hookups) in Maryland. Where you stayed looked similar. Safe travels!
We also stayed at Greenbelt we payed $20 dollars we do have an annual pass but I didn’t know if that added discount when booking online! Such a great spot just outside the city especially in the shade after exploring in the day!
@@demieverafter Thanks for the reply! We probably got the additional discount because I have the Senior pass. We also booked online. We live in FL now but when we did live in the DC area, we would frequent that park regularly for our power walks. It is an oasis in the DC metro area. This was the first time that we stayed at the campground (actually, the first time we had seen it).
First time I’ve seen a video of your adventures. Lovely Vlog. Your dog is beautiful. So wonderful you could bring her. I always traveled with my pup but had to leave him with family when I went to the UK. Are you getting done in advance all the steps necessary to get him back into the UK without quarantine as you travel? So curious how you’re working this out.
Thank you so much, Edie is definitely the star of the show isn’t she! We’re here for a long time so couldn’t leave her behind and yes we’re keeping on top of everything we need to do ☺️ thank you for watching
hiyaaaa !!! bear nil michael 1, when it comes to curry , defo need bear spray or michaels dodgy aftershave could do the job 😂😉, brill vid again kids , same old here , take care , luv etc from blighty
Small black bears like that are looking for food and are clever enough and have a great sense of smell to find food. Which can mean being around people. #1 DO NOT feed the bears! #2 Do not encourage the bears. Make noise and tell the bear who's boss. Or not if it's close and being rude. Generally it should just run from you. #3 Keep your site clean of food.
Black bears are typically timid towards humans..BUT .. campgrounds ring the dinner bell for them. They are very smart and know campgrounds=food. Yes, you are correct ..do not run. Make yourself known... act bigger than you are. Now grizzly's.... thats a whole different story.......
The bear at your campsite was a problem bear. I hope someone reported it. I hate that some bears have to be put down, but it's coming to the campsite looking for food, which is shouldn't be doing. It should be looking for food in nature. God forbid that he got your dog or someone else's dog. Or worse, a person. I'm glad you are enjoying your trip. Good luck on the next leg. This one looked amazing.
Thank you, we’re enjoying our time here! The woman at the campsite did say there’s more bears than ever around right now so to be careful! I’d hate for any to be put down too I saw kids cycling around the campsite it made me a bit worried I can only assume parent have briefed them on how to behave if they see one

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in my home state. Tennessee is home like no other.
I love Tennessee!!!
We have seen Bears many times in the Smokies. Usually in Cades Cove. Just there last month.
You got to feel the magic of seeing bears in the outdoors....the scrawny ones are yearlings that have left their mother and ventured out.
Agreed with your assessment on a yearling, high or late summer the older ones are usually a bit chunkier.

Amazing!
Funny, but there may be something similar to curry in the bear spray. Also, your dog is pretty good protection.

Careful with the little dog,- if she starts barking it can provoke the bear

British people don't understand why we have so much air conditioning here in America... until they come and visit in the summertime!
Definitely understand why you have it…it’s a hotter climate but that doesn’t prepare me for experiencing the heat 🥵😄

If you go into bear country with bear spray and not a gun you have no self preservation
The further south you go, the better chance of getting stopped by corrupt police with outrageous charges!
