- In this Quick Look I have the newly released RAF version of the 1/48 Blackburn Buccaneer kit. I've not actually seen this kit until now, so I'm interested to see how it looks!

208 Sqdn and Op Red Flag for me. I can remember seeing an article on local news about the '77 Red Flag and watching the US ground forces give up trying to track these Buccs which were flying lower than the level of the sand dunes. Made me swell with pride!😂
Also even flying below the wings of the 2 Vulcans - as a loose bomb load/mask/escort/decoy combo. BTW the red star was a US ZAP.
My father serviced the LOX (Liquid Oxygen) packs on the Buccs for both 12 and 208 Sqn at both Honnington and Lossiemouth and was with them on the 1977 Red Flag exercise for the first time. Routinely went to Gibraltar with 12 Sqn and did a lot of work on them to ready them for Op Granby. When he transitioned to NDT he continued to work on them when working between Kinloss and Lossie supporting the Nimrod fleet. He retired in 2002 after 30 years of service but continues to do NDT on civil aircraft. He will be permanently retiring at the end of this year and I will be building the Red Flag scheme for his retirement gift.

Good review, informative and without the whiney bits about minor imperfections or having to put in a bit of forethought. I agree about the previous 1:48 Bucc' kit - it's not "unbuildable", it just takes time and patience.

A favourite of mine - I am building my Royal Navy S2D at the moment. I got one of the first ones in the country as I had pre-ordered but it's slowly taking it's time as I want to get it right. The level of detail is marvellous - along with the Sea King (which will be joining it on the 1/48 FAA shelf once built) these are probably the best kits (without etch) I have seen for a long time. I have used wine bottle top wrapping metal to back the harnesses (used thinned PVA) and this almost gives the effect of etch (me being a cheapskate!)

Usually Airfix uses Cartagraph decals, which is great. The instructions looks like the new Tamiya F-35 module process.

Thanks for fair review of this kit. Another of their new era quality kits. As youve said in the review it seems quality control/production seems to be letting them down somewhat, if they could solve that these kits would rocket up the grading chart to give the gold star manufacturers a run for their money because price wise they are leading the way.

Looks like it has Martel missiles as well as Sea Eagles but the fins look a bit odd on these as they should be swept back as on the Sea Eagles..Martels came into service about the time of the S2A with the markings in the kit with the Light Aircraft Grey undersurfaces
XW547 'Guinness Girl', had her assets covered up when it was on display at Cosford.
The pointier missiles are Martels for older pre '85 airframes - (they started trials in '84). It would have been nice if they had included a refuelling pod as well as the tanks. Those were often carried at Lossie. Agreed on the tyres - they look pants - flat bottoms fine - crinkled side walls = U/S. also, the landing gear does not appear to be not compressed anywhere near enough for anything but an empty load. A standard 208 Badge, Nose Flash and Serial wouldn't have killed Airfix to add to the decal sheet either so you could substitute it for the 12 Sqn, but I'm biased.

It’s a stunning kit, but I question the XII SQN choice when the superior XV Sqn is included on the decal sheet 😂😂😂😂

The Buccaneers are one of those so ugly it's beautiful planes. Like everything from the 50's- 80's it's got style unlike the cookie cutter planes and cars of current.
I still remember sitting in a Buc at the CFB Trenton airshow as a 8 yr old. Only topped by getting to sit in a CF-104 while it did a howl demo.
Moaning about big bags....are you for real ? Buccaners retained the wing fold throughout there life ..please educate yourself before talking rubbish
Comment, not moaning. I did not say the wing folds were not retained, I said the wing folding would have been used less. I also specifically commented on the revolving bomb bay, and creases on aircraft tyres never have been, and never will, be 'normal'. Try listening before making nasty comments!
@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft The wing fold was actually used every day unless there was a really good reason not to, (at least on 208sqn). Folding them and opening the airbrakes meant you could house the whole Sqn, including 2 Hunters in one Hangar. That engine panel wasn't really opened that often, routine stuff was accessed on the lower panels, so why they didn't have those openable is odd.
Great info, thanks. Yes, I'm finding loads of photos with the wings folded, with and without weapons. Talking to a friend and we figured it would get used fairly regularly if only for leak checks and servicing type stuff. There's actually a photo in a book I have with two chaps working in that upper panel. Back in the days of blues and No.2 shoes with coveralls lol

@@HughGordon124c It was just a comment on a plastic kit pal. Not everyone is as old as you, worked on Buccs, or had the opportunity to do so. So perhaps consider that before accusing people of talking rubbish, and getting your nose bent out of shape for being rebuked on your attitude?
