- A recently finished commission of a Migration era broad seax sheath.
Its based on a find from Ipswich, at around the same time as the Sutton Hoo burials, the only surviving remains being the copper-alloy fittings; 170 small rivets, 7 medium rivets, 5 large studs and the corner piece.
I sand cast the large studs using a more historical composition copper-alloy, with around 4% zinc, while the rivets and corner piece were all hand made from phosphor bronze.
As no organic materials survived 1400 years in the ground the leather work is speculative, with the decoration taken from surviving "stepped edged" sheaths from the Netherlands and Czech Republic. The sheath is lined with vellum, for additional strength, and the outer is made from hand tanned leather.
