so I'm running 1290 pixels with no issues, however I'm using espixelstick v3.0. i tried a couple newer versions and experienced a lot of lag. i think it has something to do with all fancy stuff they put in the firmware after 3.0. I had the same lag problem with wled. I will admit 1290 is really maxing out this little chip so the firmware needs to be bare bones in my opinion. I've experienced no difference/issues between 20fps or 40fps, the output is the same and any choppiness is from xlights itself. The biggest thing for me is making sure the rssi is as good as possible, if it goes over -74dbm there's issues, -65dbm or less is the best. the choppiness that you're talking about I thought was also the esp8266 but I notice after looking closely at xlights that certain effects are choppy on the screen too so I don't think its the hardware or the firmware...
Thank you!
