I went into my local garden centre this afternoon, looking for a chinese evergreen or a calathea. Instead I gravitated towards a fantastic display of streptocarpus and from this huge selection, I picked out my favourite; low and behold, if it isn't the Polka Dot Purple! I've just looked at the card that was attached, and even stranger! It comes from Dibleys Nursery. Thank you Lynne!
Ty for the great info. Im in the US and trying to learn as much as possible about these flowers. They're my favorite. Is there a website or a book that teaches way more in depth info on them? Like info on making hybrids, propagation, exact info on artificial lighting demands? Do you by chance know about how long it takes from seed to floweringm or how long it takes from a leaf cutting to flowering? Ive looked online but i cant find any info. Ty for your time
The ones in the ''Crystal'' series are supposed to bloom non-stop. But if you have artificial lights, all common varieties will continue blooming all the year. It's Novembre and all my adult ones are still in bloom and making new flower stems.
So hard to find these in Canada, wish I could get my hands on a yellow, and a red one..any suggestions..are they easy to grow from seeds..Many thanks..
Agreed - very difficult to get in Canada! I've been trying different places for years. Just recently I ordered some Strep leaves from a vendor on Ebay ... so fingers crossed that will work!
Sometimes garden centers have a few in stock, you have to check often. ( Ex : I saw a bunch of S. Polka Dot Purple in a garden center this Spring. Nothing else. ) Years ago I used to see them from time to time, but wrongly assumed such a gorgeous plant with a big colorful flower couldn't live in my house... how silly. They are easy to grow and do great in an East facing window ( West needs a sheer curtain otherwise they wilt in the afternoon Sun ). They do great under cheap LED grow lights too. Try your luck online, but delivery can only be done when temperatures are right ( not too cold or hot ). Maby the closest big city has a plant grower association doing monthly reunions, try asking there. My orchid society has many members who also grow Streptocarpus. I know Toronto has many hobbyists and some ship cut leaves for propagation.
I’ve been growing streptocarpus from a root that was in my mothers pot. It has grown beautifully and had buds starting on the top, as well as many coming out the sides of the stem. It looks extremely healthy, but all of the blooms on the side turned Brown. These are then replaced by more buds on the side, that also eventually turned brown! The buds that look like they are going to appear on the top never bloom. I’ve done everything but the video says. I water from the bottom with a quarter strength bloom booster and only when dry. There is no browning on any of the leaves. It has been a year! Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Wow, so many beautiful varieties.
I wish we had a Dibley's in the U.S.

Hard to understand what she said about using fertilizer. Half dosis every week or every second week?
Half-dose twice a month.
Streptocarpus aren't very ''hungry''.
