He's one of many Bari-Tenors aka Deep Tenors. Our Choir Tenors can also do it cause it fits their range natrually. Who else can sing it? Going up an Octave into the Soprano range, a couple Sopranos like Deanna Durbin, Caroline Wright, & Filippa Giordano have done that one cause it kinda fits their range as well. All those Baritones, Baritenors, & Tenors are great at this one, but why have Sopranos sing that as well? It's just very lyrical. They should've rewritten the Vocal part in Treble Clef so that way it looks more natural to Tenors, & even Sopranos.
He was (debateable, many might prefer Luciano...) one of, if not THE, best tenors in the world into his 60's, his baritone was acceptable later in his career, his acting was very good (especially for an opera singer...) his conducting is coming along (no Bernstein or Karajan, but who is?) he's not "bad" in any of those categories (yes, his conducting [when he started it...] needed work - but so does any fledgling conductor, Placido just was more visible than most starting conductors...) Placido is the only tenor I know of that could sing Rossini one night and come back with a Wagner role a few days later... (and do both well!)

Placido's double, the non-singing "shadow", is his friend and tenor Orlando Montes de Oca. It's a pity that is not mentioned! Orlando dies recently in Vienna.

Though I've tried to find some corroborating evidence online of it being Orland Montes de Oca, so far no luck. It is more likely it was a colleague/friend who was such a close physical match, esp in the eyebrows (when Domingo is shaving Almaviva) and who could either also sing or could lip sync while shaving Domingo as Almaviva. While his very first son, Jose, by his first wife sorta could've pull it off physically, he's not a performer at all. In any event, it is a tour de force performance. That he can sing the light lyric and the heavier baritone roles completely with ease is just more actual measurable evidence of his superior vocal talent, musicianship and mastery of the tenor repertory of nearly any composer. He is a total artist who serves, every day, the art form we call opera. Those who denigrate him are broken. Or they're Satan. LOL ;) Those of us who love and embrace his totality don't care that he's using the baritonal aspects of his largely remaining tenor voice to interpret baritone roles. He's a living legend and that means he gets to. We are numerous enough to keep buying tickets and filling the seats to this day. And opera houses around the world are grateful. Could Pavarotti have done the same? Carreras? With the same verve and charm? I don't think so. He is the King. *[ 6apr18 Ed.: I've been reading books, articles and reviews, and watching documentaries, on him since I first posted this comment and now I feel I need to make an adjustment. I don't think he's ever been a true baritone. I don't care, just for the record, because the baritonal segments of his tenor voice serve just fine. As of this edit, he's now 77 and is, apparently, still selling tickets such that opera houses keep offering him contracts to do stage work, not just conduct. He's not alone either, as Leo Nucci (70s?) and Robert Lloyd (now 80) are both also still doing stage work. I think this lovely phenomenon named Placido was a tenor in baritone clothing at an age when in his culture, the lead roles went to baritones. His dad was a light baritone. So the inclination to think baritone was hard to resist for the very goal oriented, intense colt of a boy. But then when he auditioned at the Mexico National Opera (I've been saying, by mistake, that it was the Conservatory), they spotted his tenor voice. They handed him Amor ti vieta from Fedora to sight read. He did, cracked on the A natural and they said, yep, you're a tenor. So, that is where he started training his voice to be the super majestic, spectacular, preternatural instrument it came to be. And so, it's now my humble opinion that he's never been a baritone proper. Like all guys, he can put his voice in a baritone range and get close enough. Once his voice gets warmed up, it settles in and you can hear that glorious Placido voice sing the arias and that's all that matters. Now, those who resented his very existence when he crowded the fame pool that they jealously and foolishly defended as their guy's alone (whoever that guy was/is) continue to denigrate him by telling all manner of lie with great bitterness. Back then, they denounced him as a baritone! (But Jonas Kaufman is a tenor, amirite? No worries, I think he's a tenor--with a very Germanic baritone register.) Now, those hotheads denounce Placido as NOT a baritone. LOL And that ladies and gentlemen, outs their lack of integrity. @143Magnes, when he was young you mean? I know, off hand it sounds paradoxical. But, it wasn't that weird really, because in Mexico and Spain, and in zarzuela, the lead male roles went to baritones. But if you mean now, er, I don't think he wanted to be a baritone. Nothing would make him happier than for his entire tenor voice to come back. He still has a lot of it, but of course, he is only human. Paz y salud.
Can someone please tell me where is this from, a movie? I looked on line and I cannot find anything where Domingo played Figaro/Almaviva in 1981 :( I love it and I want the whole thing :)
placido sang figaro and rigoletto in the early 2000s if i remember correctly, but i'm not sure if they were recorded as they were live performances, i could be wrong about the recordings though

Creio que não importa tanto se a ária é de barítono. Plácido Domingo, um dos maiores tenores do século XX não fica nada a dever a Tita Ruffo e outros grandes barítonos famosos.

Ha sempre avuto la fissa di fare anche il baritono, ma non ne ha affatto le caratteristiche. Lo apprezzo come tenore, ma non si può sentire come Figaro o peggio ancora come Rigoletto. Va beh, è un giochetto simpatico, ma solo questo.

Can someone please tell me where is this from, a movie? I looked on line and I cannot find anything where Domingo played Figaro/Almaviva in 1981 :( I love it and I want the whole thing :)
placido sang figaro and rigoletto in the early 2000s if i remember correctly, but i'm not sure if they were recorded as they were live performances, i could be wrong about the recordings though

Creio que não importa tanto se a ária é de barítono. Plácido Domingo, um dos maiores tenores do século XX não fica nada a dever a Tita Ruffo e outros grandes barítonos famosos.

Ha sempre avuto la fissa di fare anche il baritono, ma non ne ha affatto le caratteristiche. Lo apprezzo come tenore, ma non si può sentire come Figaro o peggio ancora come Rigoletto. Va beh, è un giochetto simpatico, ma solo questo.
