Many wonderful guitars are made in Japan. I only play Yamaha guitars. They play as well as USA guitars. I am talking the top end of course. But at a fraction of the cost! Some of there mid-range guitars are amazing as well!
Nice guitar, the whole shape argument fight is getting really old, it would be like Dunlop sueing BFGoodrich for selling a tire because its tire is round too
I bet if you owned a company and people copied your creative trademark, you'd have a different point of view. Why can't this company make their own style? Plus it's about trademark, confusion in the marketplace.
My comment was a broad stroke comment for those who didn't pick up on it. One thing I do agree on is marking a product for example "Chibson" with lettering that is very obvious to mislead customers, yes this is wrong in every sense. Be that as it may, a shape of a product is hardly a "Trademark" or patentable thing, otherwise the builders of acoustic guitars would be screwed. For example if you look at Martin, Gibson, Ibanez ect ect ect the list goes on and on forever with new ones cropping up every year; all of their standard acoustic guitars are shaped the same, not all the exact dimensions are the same of course but generally the so called "creative design" have all been copied over and over for over a century. What CAN be trademarked is yes a name and or a specific method of wiring a pickup coil or wiring the components in a certain way so to speak, another broad stroke to cover a lot of ground quickly here. If shapes were patentable I would be a rich man and wouldn't even bother replying to such silly comments. I do own a company and people copy my ideas and methods all the time in addition they attempt and sometimes do steal my customers. What keeps one from running around pissed off all the time is the pride in the highest QUALITY of products and service I can possibly provide to my customers, THAT is what is in a name. Like I said before the argument has become quite a bore in my opinion. When a company with any name, sacrifices the once impeccable quality they once had for profits on the bottom line customers will go elsewhere. In the beginning it was Quality that made the Gibson name. Do your research before you purchase, there are excellent serial number resources right at your finger tips to authenticate an instrument. Once again to reiterate previous opinions, marking something such as the word "Chibson" for example is wrong and misleading agreed, the rest well that's always been up for grabs , do a little homework and open your eyes a little before you start trying bash someone you don't even know. Been in business for over 30yrs and about to retire from all this crap, when you have been in business that long you do have a different "viewpoint" and you open your eyes and get a grip or you don't survive.
@@sabin97 I don't know all of the ® laws, of course. At this point I'm not sure anyone can keep up with them all. But I'm fairly certain that many things, pharmaceuticals for example, have a ® that expires after 7(?) years & then other companies can make the generic.
I'm also not a lawyer and not very well-read on the subject, but i suspect companies like disney have basically infinite copyright. and most patents dont expire. pharmaceutical ones do expire after a while, but in general patents tend not to expire.
I have a Tokai les Paul gold top with p90’s. Tokai black beauty custom with 3 humbuckers and two burst les Paul’s , also by Tokai and a 335 Tokai. Stunning instruments. Love to see more of these guitars reviewed.

Steve Hackett play this guitar a lot on goldtop and black beauty style ! He talks about the sustainers sounds and he speaks about the violin sounds that the reason why he like the sustainers!
The neck binding doesnt have the nibs, which is actually better than a les paul, when it comes time for a refret, it doesnt cost an arm and a leg for the neck binding.
Guitar Max: Thanks for the review. Why not include a link to where this guitar can be ordered directly from the manufacture for those of us that live outside the USA? Thanks
In the 80s 90s I played 7 nights a week doing hard top 40 big hair rock covers andI bought a Japanese Fernandez Stratacastor24 fret neck through emgs double lock Floyd. BEST GUITAR IVE EVER OWNED !!!!! EVER !!!
Yeah, Gibson probably has a copyright issue with this Japanese Les Paul. More importantly though, they also don't want you to know how much better it is than their overpriced pieces of crap.
@@mr.wizard2974 Yes they do. They even had pictures of their guitars on their own website with broken headstocks, chips in the paint, and paint on the binding. Sure it sounds petty on that last one, but when you're paying for a custom shop Gibson, minor flaws like that are unacceptable. They stopped caring about quality years ago and live off their name only. Buy a Gibson made before 2000 if you want one.
I wouldnt go that far I just got one of these and it's no where near as good sounding or even the way it feels as my les Paul lol it's a good guitar but the 800 I paid is overpriced I'd say it's a 600 dollar guitar brand new if that
I play a burny lp copy, a tokai loverock, a pearl lp copy, and a gibson lp custom. my scoresheet goes as follows BURNY --- 4/10 LOVEROCK --- 9/10 PEARL --- 7/10 GIBSON --- 10/10 these conclusions are based purely on sound (natural) and playability of the guitars.
Back in the late 70's, and early 1980, my friend an I bought 2 White "Ibanez" les Paul copies from a guitar store. His LP is an almost exact replica of the Gibson, then Gibson sued Ibanez for trademark. and mine is the first addition of the "Lawsuite" series. I still have mine today, and play it almost daily. It was bright white like the one shown in the video, but has yellowed with age.
2:56 Wink... A VPN set to Japan would allow someone in the US to buy it 'from Japan' and then give the shipping address as the US? Just guessing. Alternatively, crypto could purchase it cross border. Pretty sure of that. Ah... the beauty and power of decentralization...
If you buy the guitar brand new and ship it to the states, there might be a significant chance it would be seized by customs. Since Fernandes or whomever is liable to get sued for copyright infringement for selling a new guitar to the states. What you really have to do, is get a buddy in Japan to open the packaging there and make it "used" so then you'd be all clear. It might work if you buy a demo guitar from there though
Ive got an Aria Pro 2 guitar made in Japan from 1979 based on a Gibson Les Paul custom, It has a sycamore top, a middle pick up and it has a beautiful green finish, plus a coil tap switch. But talking about guitar shapes, this is slightly different from the proper Les Paul. It's a bit like a cross between an Aria PE and a Proper Les Paul, the cut away horn bit goes into a point, and with the uncut away bit forms an S shape and has a very Japanese'y look like the head stock which looks similar to Paul Reed Smith Guitars. I still use it, and it is still my best and favourite. when I bought it in 1979 it only cost £135 including the case.
It's curious. I wonder why they don't tweak the designs enough to avoid the trademark issue? America seems like a big market to not sell your product in, wonder what their reasoning is for staying out of our market? Does Fernandes/Burny produce guitars under other brand names, with different designs, that they do sell in the USA?
Because if they tweak the shape, people probably wouldn't buy them. There's plenty off "tweaked" lp style guitars for sale in the US market that don't sell well.
Trevor that's exactly it. Companies like Burny, Tokai and Greco are known for making copies of iconic American guitars so well they surpassed the quality of the originals so much they literally forced Gibson and Fender to up their game and are even credited by many for Gibsons decision to start producing reissues since that's basically what these companies were doing. I have some of these Japanese guitars and can tell you without hesitation that they are phenomenal.
Gibson lets companies get away with cloning their guitars except for "one thing", the "Open Book" headstock. Even licensed Gibson clones aren't allowed to use the Open Book headstock. If they had just rounded or squared off the end of the headstock they probably wouldn't be banned.
tokenup420 Not by patent, but trademarks are forever and they trademarked the size, the headstock shape and the font. They could make the cut less pointy and the headstock different, but the Japanese market is very traditionalist and their sales over there could fall
Waiting for delivery of a black Burny custom with P90. It has a laurel fretboard so light brown thats a shame. Can’t wait to get in my hands. Played a Tokai last week. See how it compares.
That sounds amazing! GFS has a model similar to this minus the sustainer electronics. Had the traditional model and was very impressed with it for around $200. Hands down that thing is a beast but way out of my price range. Sustainer electronics peaked my interest hmmm... Great video as always brother!
Interesting guitar for sure, Max - thanks for the review/look. FYI, Satriani and Ibanez has also been offering Sustainer neck pickups on the JS line for a couple years now. :)
I'm a hobby guitarist, been for all of my life. And thus i tend to collect guitars in a small scale. Cheap ones and less cheap ones. And this far i have found quite little to motivate buying a big brand (Fender, Gibson or what have you). Yeah, they have nice quality, but not pay 4-10 times as much nice. I get much more out of buying a knockoff that feels good in the store, tweaking it to suit my needs and as a added bonus, i dont have to be in constant fear of banging up a 2-3k USD guitar.
You can always have one installed as an aftermarket custom job, personally I wouldn't do it though, I think it's sacrilege and looks horrible unless it's a Bigsby.
A lot of guitar companies guitars are using Indonesian made. Sometimes you can choose your preference for manufacturers on certain guitars! Phillip Austin
For what it's worth, their website has it listed as 85,000 yen (which is currently equivalent to $747 US). Although, if they're including shipping and fees for importing through customs, it could end up being higher.
I had three Burny Les Paul Customs….a black one from the ‘80s, and a black one from the ‘90s. The two early models were killer guitars. Both had Gibson style diamond headstock inlays. The third was a 2000s model in cherry. It was a decent guitar, but not as nice as the earlier ones. Finish was super thick, and the headstock inlay was the flower design like the white one in the video.
I bought 2 MIJ Epiphones LPs off eBay from a Japanese seller. Painless transaction. These Epis have the same open book headstock, just like a Gibby. Incredible sounding guitars, with deep tenons. Japanese guitar makers are so faithful to the original designs.
It looks and sounds good, but it just seems stupid for them not to work around the trademark. What's so special about the single cutout shape? Nothing, everyone uses it. It seems to come down to copying the headstock too closely. And that headstock is absolutely the worst design feature on the Les Paul, bar none. I'd copy everything else but leave that off. Take this model, chop of the headstock entirely, and swap in the right bridge to go with that choice, it would be an even better guitar, and they could sell it in the USA too.
How does the Burny compare to the Harley Benton Floyd, at least in Australia the Burny is 4 times the price but is still considerably cheaper than most LP style with Floyds.
I think if the Head Stock doesn't fall off of it within the first week of owning it it shouldn't violate copyright laws
LOLOLOLO
Nice!

My son has a used Fernandes "strat". Beats the pants off my American Strat from 95.
Pride in their workmanship and quality control! Thats why a toyota tacoma is worth more than a chevy Colorado! No comparison. That is one of the best sounding les paul style guitars i’ve ever heard. Nice video!
Love it! LP with a Floyd and sustainer is my dream. Project plans are in motion. Thanks for the vid!
I have a LP style with a floyd, and I’m tempted to mod it with a sustainer after watching this video.
there's the Digitech Freq- out pedal.. its killer. to me its the same as the harmonic setting on sustainer.
No man. Don't screw the Gibson guitar get the BOSS foot pedal instead.
I'm gonna check on that myself.
@@kmatax9237 thanks for that info!
Linkin Park style?
In 1987 I bought a Fernandez it was a 24 fret neck through emgs double locking Floyd Rose it was a red colored clear coat and was probably the best guitar I've ever owned in my life as a pro plan nightclubs 30 years seven nights a week
Many wonderful guitars are made in Japan. I only play Yamaha guitars. They play as well as USA guitars. I am talking the top end of course. But at a fraction of the cost! Some of there mid-range guitars are amazing as well!
Extremely true. Hard to fathom the $ spent on some of our products made here that arent on par with Yamaha
A very good deal when you find one of these. The Japanese made geetars are truly at the top of the geetar game! 👍 to Max for showcasing this geetar! 🤟
nahh i've try a couple of vintage burny its below Lespaul tribute / Studio
Been in business for over 30yrs and about to retire from all this crap, when you have been in business that long you do have a different "viewpoint" and you open your eyes and get a grip or you don't survive.
copyright should have an expiration date of 10 years, tops. fuck it! if you cant profit in 10 years, you dont deserve to profit ever.
@@sabin97 I don't know all of the ® laws, of course. At this point I'm not sure anyone can keep up with them all.
But I'm fairly certain that many things, pharmaceuticals for example, have a ® that expires after 7(?) years & then other companies can make the generic.
I'm also not a lawyer and not very well-read on the subject, but i suspect companies like disney have basically infinite copyright.
and most patents dont expire.
pharmaceutical ones do expire after a while, but in general patents tend not to expire.
destroying new guitars just to keep price jacked is the only thing should be banned
Ditto good sir 👍
Reminds me of my 1977 Ibanez Rocket Roll Senior - one of the last serial #'s before Gibson sued. I still have it. That axe has been around.
I am impressed by that sustainable system. Plus a Floyd rose too. What a beast
I say check out the Glary guitars. Their Telecaster model is great for the money spent, in my opinion.
I have a Tokai les Paul gold top with p90’s. Tokai black beauty custom with 3 humbuckers and two burst les Paul’s , also by Tokai and a 335 Tokai. Stunning instruments. Love to see more of these guitars reviewed.
Steve Hacket has been playing a Fernandes for years
This is a totally cool guitar. To be able to make sounds like that with a Floyd Rose- WITH the guitar on clean ? That sounded great.
i dont know crap about guitars but listened to a les paul last video .this has a very nice sound all around...love it
You are seriously a damn GOD and your videos are filled with great information and insight without coming off as elitist. You present great content in an easily digestible format. Thanks bro
That guitar has an amazing setup and sound. I'd love to own one.
Steve Hackett play this guitar a lot on goldtop and black beauty style !
He talks about the sustainers sounds and he speaks about the violin sounds that the reason why he like the sustainers!
Always a pleasure to watch and listen to this gent... A polished presentation every time...
Totally agree.
And that's how a literated musician besides his skills create a video for all ranges of musicians. Thank you sir.
What did you say?
@@OldRunt lo siento, NO HABLA INGLÉS
Just had a Burny shipped from England. Love it and do play it more than my Gibson LP.
That's a cool guitar! The sustainer feature is really neat.
Beautiful guitar and beautiful sounding too. Thanks for sharing man...
The neck binding doesnt have the nibs, which is actually better than a les paul, when it comes time for a refret, it doesnt cost an arm and a leg for the neck binding.
You can start a religion with that guitar in clean mode 7:00
Amen
How'd he make that noise?
Magnus Erikson Feedback. He explained how the built in sustain causes feedback. Other than that he was also using the whammy bar.
Scotty's Animals j
Scotty's Animals I'm part of the religion
love that there's a Lee Jackson Metaltronix back there...
I have a Burny rlg from the 80s and I love it.
Nice guitar man, thanks! You can find these for sale at Reverb and many other online distributors.
Guitar Max: Thanks for the review. Why not include a link to where this guitar can be ordered directly from the manufacture for those of us that live outside the USA? Thanks
I have that same exact guitar, bought used in Indiana for $550. Love it! I can't really play like you, but still lovin' it. Peace.
Buy a Gibson made before 2000 if you want one.
overpriced yes..crap...your out of your lame ass mind
Yeh in the UK you can buy these type of guitar's for just over £400 from Amazon
I wouldnt go that far I just got one of these and it's no where near as good sounding or even the way it feels as my les Paul lol it's a good guitar but the 800 I paid is overpriced I'd say it's a 600 dollar guitar brand new if that
I play a burny lp copy, a tokai loverock, a pearl lp copy, and a gibson lp custom.
my scoresheet goes as follows
BURNY --- 4/10
LOVEROCK --- 9/10
PEARL --- 7/10
GIBSON --- 10/10
these conclusions are based purely on sound (natural) and playability of the guitars.
Your hair reminds me of Glenn Danzig in his hayday and I love it.
-5 points.
Guitar MAX and -5 points for not reading the description
2:56 Wink...
A VPN set to Japan would allow someone in the US to buy it 'from Japan' and then give the shipping address as the US?
Just guessing.
Alternatively, crypto could purchase it cross border. Pretty sure of that. Ah... the beauty and power of decentralization...
Is that true? Would the company ship it to the US?
are just use amazon jp lol alot of items have international shipping also guitar planet in japan offers a tax free international shipping service

Will Mcwithey You're telling me haha. I'm gonna buy a nice MIJ plaintop one of these days lol.
Zelomeister ikr just changing the headstock would be both an improvement and a great trick to avoid legal issues
Gibson lets companies get away with cloning their guitars except for "one thing", the "Open Book" headstock. Even licensed Gibson clones aren't allowed to use the Open Book headstock. If they had just rounded or squared off the end of the headstock they probably wouldn't be banned.
I’ve always heard good things about Burny, but I always wondered why you don’t see them in the USA. Question answered! Thanks man!
I need this guitar. .. .
Gary Heighway🤔 😉 Need?
yeah “Need’.
but doesn’t the floyd rose mess up the les paul ness? tone wise. it still seems like a nice guitar.
cool video. thanks!
I have three in stock. They’re just as good as this video implies 😉
Michael Davenport sweet....
michael davenport whats the cost?????? and colors
Another good review Max
I just got the hard tail version in white. I’m really looking forward to playing it. I had a Fernandes Monterey with a sustainer and stupidly sold it.
This guitar has unique character, especially in clean sound.
Cheers from Indonesia
Is this still valid since gibson no longer holds the rights to the shape?
tokenup420 Not by patent, but trademarks are forever and they trademarked the size, the headstock shape and the font.
Joe Satchton As well Steve Vai if I can remember I think he uses Fernandez sustainiac. I don't know if it's available in every model or just for him
I'm a hobby guitarist, been for all of my life.
It looks exactly like the guitar that Steve Clark from Def Leppard played. I always wondered where he got a Les Paul with a tremolo from.
Steamin' Steve. Miss that guy.
You can always have one installed as an aftermarket custom job, personally I wouldn't do it though, I think it's sacrilege and looks horrible unless it's a Bigsby.
earned a sub! what a well thought out video. this guy rocks.
A lot of guitar companies guitars are using Indonesian made. Sometimes you can choose your preference for manufacturers on certain guitars! Phillip Austin
the price of the guitar just went from $800 to $1250 in a month ....wow
That's what happens when a youtuber shows off a product that fills a gap in a price range
For what it's worth, their website has it listed as 85,000 yen (which is currently equivalent to $747 US).
Although, if they're including shipping and fees for importing through customs, it could end up being higher.
I never found the nice guitars that Max show us.
Maybe 'cause I am in Europe?
I love it..I only feel comfortable with a les
An the money it cost the install a floyd rose on my ultra was insane
I had three Burny Les Paul Customs….a black one from the ‘80s, and a black one from the ‘90s. The two early models were killer guitars. Both had Gibson style diamond headstock inlays. The third was a 2000s model in cherry. It was a decent guitar, but not as nice as the earlier ones. Finish was super thick, and the headstock inlay was the flower design like the white one in the video.
I remember some years ago Kirk Hammett playing a Fernandes. Or maybe I'm just senile. Haha
He had a Fernandes strat-style that he used in the 80s
Awesome video Maxx !!!! Never cease to amaze !!! What a MAJOR TALENT !!
Great review.
I bought 2 MIJ Epiphones LPs off eBay from a Japanese seller. Painless transaction. These Epis have the same open book headstock, just like a Gibby. Incredible sounding guitars, with deep tenons. Japanese guitar makers are so faithful to the original designs.
That guitar is beautiful btw! Love your playing man, always such great uploads.
Please demo the Blackstar and Bugera amps behind you
Doing a demo of the Bugera soon!
That profile pic almost confused me
How does the Burny compare to the Harley Benton Floyd, at least in Australia the Burny is 4 times the price but is still considerably cheaper than most LP style with Floyds.
The coolest legit Japanese Les Paul clone ever! 👌
Who wouldn't ban a Floyd Rose on a Les Paul?
lol
Gibson would.....and the US Patent Office....lol
😂😂😂😂
Me?
I have to agree with you.
But we really gonna have a problem with Alex Lifeson getting him with us on this
I have several Orville by Gibson, Orville, Burny & Greco Gibson style guitars & they are excellent guitars. They are all readily available on eBay.
If it’s good enough for Steve Hackett, it’s good enough for me!
And me!
