It's amazing to hear this Trout Mask material played live, despite how complex, unusual and seeming incidental it all is the band seem to know it inside out, there's nothing you can compare to this, Beefheart's an absolute fucking hero for giving the world such a totally unique musical experience.
Beefheart was ALWAYS great, but for me, there is always a mystique around Trout Mask. It's such a special album. One of the 5 best albums ever made, in my opinion.
I think the music the band was playing was so complex Don couldn't keep up so he probably needed the lyrics to remind him where he was. That's also probably the reason he never sang with the band when recording Trout Mask Replica. Trying to find where to come in and sustain the rhythm was probably beyond him
@hassanisobar1 Sorry, it's Jeff Bruschele, not Tom! This is from the Amougies Festival in Belgium, october 24-28th 1969. You'll notice that there's only one guitarist--Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo)--this is because Jeff Cotton had left the ("Trout Mask") band due to an altercation with Jeff Bruschele. Consequently Harkleroad adapted a lot of those Trout Mask parts so as to be able to approximate BOTH guitar parts! Anyhow, according to John French (who left May 1969), Beefheart had (cont.)...

Live on the last day (5 out of 5) of the famous Amougies Festival in late October 1969. Zappa was some kind of a MC/guest and jammed with many acts including, of course, his then 'protégé' and label mate. Stunning memory indeed in spite of being near the end of a 5 day marathon! The whole thing has been filmed but the movie never got edited, let alone shown.
zappa was beefhearts childhood friend .. so not sure id describe the captain as his "protege" ..simply because zappa helped him with money/recording costs .. since both developed their music independently .. i feel one of the two was a creative genius .. the other a very technical musician.. who bores the shite out of me personally .. called zappa ..so a better description might be "peer" .. it'd make me happier ;)
I'm pretty unitiated when it comes to Beefheart... I've only heard Trout Mask Replica, and while I completely appreciate it as something both unique and incredibly skillful, it's also not the easiest thing for me to just sit down and listen to. But watching these incredible live performances has given me new appreciation for these songs. I think it's time to revisit this album and dive into the rest of Beefheart's catalogue. Thanks for posting!
Wow - a you tuber who comes out with an intelligent and not insulting reply! I have seen the Captain many times, the earliest was at The Rainbow theatre in North London in 1971 or 1972, then at Bickershaw festival in 1972 and then his different band in London in 74 and his final band in London in about 81. All performances were unique and utterly brilliant. The world would be a duller place without the Magic Band!
The most important investigator in rock forms, beefheart resolve all the problems about rock evolution going to the extreme point of his language and commistion with free jazz forms
O man! This really takes me back! I saw him round about this time in concert in Liverpool. He was amazing! When he arrived he made a sequence of new paintings to exhibit and I was lucky enough to be helping out in the gallery. So I actually got to meet him and help hang the pictures (some of which were still wet). He was a wonderful man, easy and kind and above all totally self-contained within his art. He was friendly and encouraging to all around him.
You can see the results of the countless hours & days of rehearsal up in that Woodland Hills home in this vid. These guys have it down so well they're almost on autopilot
According to "Hal's Progressive Rock Blog", the lineup is: Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) vocals, tenor & soprano sax, bass clarinet Victor Hayden (The Mascara Snake) - bass clarinet Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo) - guitars Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) - bass Jeff Burchell (The Imposter Drumbo) - drums & percussion Apparently Frank Zappa joined in on guitar on 'When Big Joan Sets Up' at the end of the set. Does any video exist of this, or of 'Wild Life' or 'Hobo Chang Ba'? hssmrg
It's great this is still here. The classic "Trout Mask Replica" lineup. Like most great bands they looked and sounded great onstage. Absolutely priceless footage.
I saw Beefheart perform in 1971 and a couple of other times. I'm stunned every time I hear him, even 40 years later. Live, it rocks big time but you aren't sure quite how.
so many great artists have played at this concert Beefheart, FZ, pink floyd , soft machine, yes, archie shepp, pharoah sanders etc. wish i was there...
The Grandfather of outsider music. Lead singer in my all time dream band. Apparantly, a fucking tyrant as a band leader but that all adds to his charm. Interesting painter as well.
I believe this was from a movie. I used to watch it on Quebec television back in 71-72. Saw the movie a few times, but forget the name. It was a weekend festival and also featured Zappa, The Nice, Pink Floyd and King Crimson (I think)
Note to self: Actually I like alot of post-modern artists, I prefer the "avant-garde". Today's modern art is 95% bullshit, like the Paris Olympic opening ceremony in 2024
horsedoctorman Refreshing to finally hear someone who truly knows about the Captain and his music. Was trying to figure out who this drummer was. I knew about the story of the roadie beating up Cotton and French quitting/being thrown out but never put two and two together. Is that Zappa on the side there?
Incredible, he has finally died. What a loss for Music, he was a true genius: a weird maniac! But I still listen to his musical legacy, what pieces he composed... I hope you will have your peace now ole man. THANK YOU!!

Yes, Shirley is right. John "Drumbo" French and Jeff "Antenna Jimmy Semens" Cotton were no longer in the Magic Band. Jeff "The Fake Drumbo" Fruschell had never played a gig in his lIfe and I'd all stories are to be believed, I think he did very well
This is curious indeed; every description that I have read about the "fake Drumbo" suggests that he wasn't very good at his job but the fellow here acquits himself very well indeed. He also bears an uncanny resemblance to Art Tripp III who, IIRC, was actually at this festival with Zappa. Perhaps he sat in? Perhaps this clip isn't actually from Belgium and is in fact from the slightly later period when Artie joined the band after Drumbo (and Burschel) left.. Veddy interesting.
You couldn't be more wrong - I love Captain Beefheart's music and it's tragic that the "Trout Mask Replica" version of the Magic Band only ever played one gig, and this isn't it. Though this is a fascinating clip, it could have been so much better. The part you did get right is that I owe the profession of roadie an apology. I don't owe Jeff Bruschell an apology though - couldn't hold a candle to John French as a drummer, and a nasty piece of work who beat the shit out of Jeff Cotton.
FORTY-ONE YEARS AGO and it is STILL AHEAD OF ITS TIME! As big an influence as Hendrix (if not bigger) when it comes to making the music a whole new ball game. Yes Sir! The Captain is THE MAN.
This is from the film 'Music Power' by jerome lapperoussaz, and of the Paris Actuel festival relocated at Amougies. weekend Oct 24th 1969. I think there should be some footage of Frank Zappa playing a Gibson 335 or similar (only because i have seen a photo backstage) I have heard that it was shown on Quebec TV, and would like to learn more
amazing...1st time hearing these tunes live..i only had previously heard the Trout Mask Replica versions. THANKS for posting! a friend/collaborator was recently telling me that Drumbo composed MUCH of the Magic Band's music....which was flipping brilliant music, obviously speaking.
Actually, Beefheart was not a drug user. He probably wouldn't have known a bag of weed if someone threw it at him. What he was however, was an original, and experimenter. This, of course, makes people uncomfortable, hence VikingsOnCall's comment. People don't know what to make of it. Sure, the quality is sub-standard, but the point gets made.

Nice seeing the Magic Band playing some Trout Mask Replica songs live. It's really too bad that Jeff Cotton and John French weren't in the band anymore. I heard that Jeff Cotton quit the band because be got into a physical fight with the new drummer. As far as I know, the original TMR band played live only once when they opened for The Mothers in a venue in L.A.
@hassanisobar1 (continued from previous comment)...being "romancing" Bruschele, saying he'd be able to play like Drumbo, etc, on his frequent visits to the "Trout House". Bruschele hadn't played the drums before this. Anyway, Art Tripp joined TMB in late November 1969--a few months after the original Mothers broke up--and his first gig with them was a club called Thee Experience in Hollywood, Nov. 28th and 29th and Dec. 4th, 5th and 6th. John French rejoined "March or April" 1970.
Hey froderoo, guess what? I love to listen to this music, and I'm 14! Do you think any of my friends think I'm cool for listening to this? HELL NO. I like this music because I think it's enjoyable to listen to, and it's creative :)
Wow. That is a real find. Hats of to FattyJubbo for posting this. I'd be curious to know where you turned this up. Late 90s I worked on gathering every scrap of video out there on the Captain and I'd seen pieces of this with a song from Clear Spot dubbed over it but never this with the actual sound. Awesome stuff. Most of what I collected is up here but I should dig through and post whatever else isn't. I'd love to know how much more of this show is out there somewhere....
@Vliet2 - RUclips won't let me answer your mail. I think I must have seen him at the Albert Hall rather than the roundhouse because it was certainly around 1972. Rockette Morton and Zoot Horn Rollo were great - the whole band had a tremendous musical understanding.
That's what Don was supposed to have said to Aldous Huxley when he was trying to sell him a vacum cleaner. He pointed to the cleaner and said "Sir, this sucks!"
Fantastic Performance! This show was at "Festival D'Amougies" in Belgium, this festival was called "the Woodstock of Europe", 5 days with the most important groups of pop and free jazz..with a performance of Pink Floyd together with Frank Zappa (Pink Z Floyd), Gong made it's debut at this festival, Has anyone ever seen the performance of Gong at this festival? There is also a film of this festival..
When the Captain plays sax it sounds like I do... the thing is when I play sax I don't know a thing about what I'm doing, and I couldnt possibly repeat a lick of what I'd just played a second time. When the Captain plays, he repeats it to the note when he plays live, just as he did in the studio. He knows what he's doing... completely... He's no effin hack.
angelrocket88 This kind of music is actually really complex, because this is no "nonsense". They keep their rythm, and know how to play. It's just something so different, many may dismiss it as nonsense.
Yes - I am from the UK. Beefheart was pretty popular over here and his concerts frequently sold out. Do you think that Don rehearsed his band as much as Zappa did his? There was very little improvisation in Zappas music from what I can glean from interviews with musicians who played in his bands.
i can't speak to what anyone pretended to like in 1969, but i've liked beefheart's music ever since i first heard it when i was 14 in 1980. i've rarely ever gotten anything but flak for being a fan, and never saw any evidence that anyone could receive any kind of points for pretending to dig him. beyond that, i went on to get a music degree; i've listened to, studied, and played tons of different kinds of music. i still love beefheart's music just as much, if not more. it's not painful to me.
I was listening to shiny beast on the night he died with no idea he was already gone. Listening to the radio tonight and i meant to hit the volume and hit the tuner instead. I was shocked and pleased to hear Beefheart on the radio! And then I realized why, because he's dead. Moral of the story, if you wanna get on the radio, die.. It's a shame the rest of the world never took the time to really get to know Don, but i'm glad there are millions out there that got so much out of what he did.
lol, of course they took acid. he totally bullshitted that rolling stone interview because he knew they would buy it. but thanks for posting this! amazing!
Just Zoot Horn Rollo and no Antennae Jimmy Semens. Drumbo on the drumbs, tho. And The Mascara Snake skronking that bass clarinet. Without the second guitar it's a Lick My Decals vibe.
I guess it was a revolution at the time. But since I wasn't there to know what was already created and what not...It's hard to say anything else but my opinion that this is one of the painful things I could ever listen to.
Ironic that Don needs lyric sheets and the band needs to remember every note of that music!
The rules are for thee not me,lol
I think the music the band was playing was so complex Don couldn't keep up so he probably needed the lyrics to remind him where he was. That's also probably the reason he never sang with the band when recording Trout Mask Replica. Trying to find where to come in and sustain the rhythm was probably beyond him
I know most of his lyrics. I think I could get the rest with a little effort. But the Band isn't hiring anymore.
Curious… He weren’t no saint
Don never rehearsed with the Magic Band. & apparently not a nice guy.
This is the kind of music that you are supposed to hate, and yet its some of the best music ever written.

I see Zappa lurking in the background!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dream band...
