    All their albums sound very different from from one another and there are many reasons why they are probably the most critically acclaimed bands since the Beatles. There is also many reasons why so many Jazz and even Classical musicians love and cover them.

    A couple of tracks that don't often get reacted to from this album are Electioneering, which is more aggressive sounding and punchy, and Let Down, which is just beautiful. The album works really well, listened to as a whole. It's a commentary on the disconnect we feel as a result of how our society is going.

      Let Down is arguably their best song full stop. Took me a good dozen listens to appreaciate it’s genius. It’s all in the lyrics, the understated simplistic yet beautiful melody, with the cherry on top being that steady irresistible crescendo.

    Thom has name checked R.E.M, The Pixies, Neil Young and Jeff Buckley as influences and because they are British, Pink Floyd and The Beatles are obvious influences, they are ingrained in our culture over here.
    They were starting to listen to a lot of Electronica at the time this was recorded especially DJ Shadow, Massive Attack and Portishead.
    Thom said that a lot (but not all) of the song is about an encounter Thom had with a horrible coked up woman at a party in L.A, he spilled a drink on her outfit and she went crazy with all the "do you know who i am?, you are nothing, you shouldn't even be here, my outfit costs more than you make in a year"......
    rumour is the party was for Radiohead ! and she was a record company executive who didn't even know who they were, she was just there to be 'there'. Thom said the look in her eyes was one of the most disturbing things he had seen.
    There is a few lines in the song about her.. you will be first against the wall.. piss (rain) down on me from a great height..kicking screaming gucci little piggy, yuppies networking..
    The last line had to be changed as well.. it should be "god loves his children, thats why he kills them, yeah"

    The robotic voice is by a text to speech program from an Apple Macintosh computer at that time. It had a name, like a man's name but I can't remember what it was.
    Edit! I think it was Fred, the name of this specific voice in the software 🙂 You can hear it better in the track Fitter, Happier from the same album

    Every time I hear the studio version of this song, I'm disappointed it's not the live version they played on "Later with Jools Holland" in May 1997. ruclips.net/video/NzPtr_n-m8A/видео.html
    That performance goes beyond legendary. Bonus points for it being their "comeback" after the Britpop era, so it must have left people absolutely speechless.
    Regarding the "I may be paranoid but I'm no android", I've heard it said that it was Stephen Hawking's voice, but haven't seen anything to corroborate.

    What you call the song being "all over the place", merely is the fact it was written structure like was done with Bohemian Rhapsody with different movements / parts, but end to end, especially if you hear it a few times, it becomes that they are not all over the place at all and it's a very consistent structure all the way through.

    • @CC-oi9mc
      @CC-oi9mc 2 года назад +2

      It was actually a bunch of songs that they couldn’t finish so they mashed them together as a solution , it wasn’t intentionally conceived as a suite

    • @voiceover2191
      @voiceover2191 2 года назад +2

      @@CC-oi9mc You are right, from an interview with Colin Greenwood: "We’d had a drink - but only one. Orange juice with vodka. And we were in this large wooden ballroom. We’d lit candles. And we were jamming, which is something we’d never done before. That brought a spontaneity, which helped the song come to life. It’s essentially three different songs stitched together. Were the lyrics there from the very start? I don’t remember."
      My version probably came from something I read from someone's opinion, not a band member.

      @@voiceover2191 Radiohead are known for not giving up on old or unreleased material - nude was written during the ok computer sessions, the national anthem is based on a song thom yorke wrote when he was 16, true love waits was probably written even before ok computer, burn the witch was an old rehearsal jam

    I don´t agree about the song being all over the place. If you stop it that could be the impression, but from beginning to end it flows gracefully even with all the switches. The same happens with the album, the songs flow perfectly and the whole experience is listening to the album from beginning to end. Wonderful album really in every aspect. And yes, being from the 90s the album captures the zeitgeist of this 21st century, it´s relevant today even more than when it came out.

    Random fact: The anime Ergo Proxy used Paranoid Android as their outro/credits song for all of the episodes. Considering the plot of the series, the choice to use this song was quite apt.
