  • J. Krishnamurti - Amsterdam 1981 - Public Talk 2 - A religious mind is a very factual mind
    Summary:
Can we observe together what is living and what it means to die?
Is it possible while one is living, with all the turmoil, with that energy, capacity, to end attachment?
Why has religion played such a great part in our lives from the most ancient of times until today?
A religious mind is completely without disorder.
In meditation there is no system, no practice; but the clarity of perception of a mind that is free, that has no direction, no choice, and is free to observe.
Conflict exists only when there is division. Where there is nationalistic, economic or social division there must be conflict. Inwardly, where there is the division between the observer, the one who witnesses, the one who experiences, different from that which he experiences, there must be conflict.
A mind that is practising, struggling, wanting to be silent is never silent.

what he is saying is that when we have a thought, and another thought comes in and tries to do something with that thought, that creates separation, friction. But actually the thought that says that it has to control the other thought is just a thought, just like the one it tries to control. The intellect separates out one thought and calls it the "controller" that tries to control the other thoughts. It's all just a mental abstraction. Like when you start doubting yourself, the one who is doubting oneself is the fictitious imaginary "I" who tries get a hold of himself. But the separation between the thinker and the thought is very much that very thing which creates the suffering.

A "Religious Mind" is Free to observe ALL of its emotional thoughts & feelings that arise in ones daily relationships. "Religion" is Holistic Self-Awareness of all illusory activity arising in the mind. Religion is being free to question the validity of Emotional Traditions and never blindly obey beliefs, dogmas or saints. Illusion arises out of the Desire to Escape from Emotional Disturbance rather than to penetrate it. Avoiding my nature is being contradictory which is a rejection of being WHOLE, moral.

This at the wake of Paris massacre. K is like a loving, prompting grandma, a must for our brutal 20 century. Let's just hope humanity understands the Truth, that unless we want peace with such intensity, such desperation that there's no time, no space, but only immediate realization of ahimsa. Never anti-terror nor war, but be Peace. To K, To Gandhi, our real spiritual KinGs. One taught with decades of talks and the other with actions. Prism of LOVE : Truth, Beauty and ego-less.

I believe that K was a man generations ahead of his time and a genius really.
I have 4 questions which I wish someone had asked K. If anybody knows of any video or audio of him addressing them please share. Thanks in advance!
ON DESIRE: K used to say something along the lines that desire is created by thought, and is destructive, brings insecurity, which brings division, which leads to violence and all the rest of it. Nonetheless, didn’t he himself “desire” that the people listening to his lectures understood what he was trying to communicate to them? Of course he did! Did he desire to change mankind and stop human suffering? Of course he did! Thus, he desired! He desired to change the world!
ON DIVISION: K used to say that ANY type of division was “bad” (i.e. nationality, family, religion, etc.), but he himself often DIVIDED time between “psychological time” and “physical time”. Thus, his argument was often supported by division! The same applied to desire when he talked about desire for physical security being separate and distinct from desire for psychological security. He divided them!
ON THOUGHT: K used to say (something like) thought was always playing tricks on human beings, and could never lead to right action, and only led to sorrow and all the rest of it. Nonetheless, during his many talks with Dr. David Bohm, they both were systematically “thinking” about how to best coin a sentence. That was thought in action! Their words were a product of thought! They even mentioned having looked the meaning of world in the dictionary.
ON SECURITY: K stated that if one reached psychological security than physical security would be “all right”, because true psychological security would always lead to right action. He even said that if his house burned down, he would not care. Come on now! I would care (and guess I will always care) if my house burns down!

+Blue Jacky Thanks for all the K quotes.
Please note when you say that my "observations are pretty false" you are not really listening to them.
I am not "just comparing what Jiddu Krishnamurti says to what you believe and then criticizing". What I am doing is following his own recommendation and "going into it", "questioning it", "looking at it", "observing it".
I am under the impression that you may have taken offense in that, which if so is unfortunate.
Reading the quotes you kindly posted makes me wonder, there are arguably many contradictions. For example:
K: "My inquiry now is how to be free from the fear of the known , which is the fear of losing my family, my reputation, my character, my bank account, my appetites and so on"
My inquiry: Is that not DESIRE? The desire to be free from the known? Free from sorrow, pain and the rest of it?
K: "My difficulty is my desire to live in a certain frame. Can I not break the frame?"
My inquiry: Why does he desire to change? Who is the observer thinking there is a better way of living?
K: "Do we now know what fear is? Is it not the non-acceptance of what is?"
My inquiry: So, does that mean he was a fearful man, given this non-acceptance of the current state of affairs?
K: "How can I, who am a bundle of all these reactions, responses, memories, hopes, depressions, frustrations, who am the result of the movement of consciousness blocked, go beyond?"
My inquiry: Again, he displays a DESIRE for change.
Again, please don't take my inquiry as attacks, I am simply following K's own recommendation to question everything any guru says is true.
Also, going back to all the quotes, if mankind were to abandon psychological thought, what kind of society would we have?

    • @Khmevo
      @Khmevo 5 лет назад +6

If one only understands the meaning of the English words, one will not understand the Thing he is talking about. "The Word is not the Thing." he often said. So one needs to go beyond the words deeper to understand the real meaning.
ON DESIRE: He said he doesn't have any attachment to his audience at all, meaning he has no desire for them to listen to him or not listen to him. He has no desire to change mankind, he only shares to mankind. His actions do not base on Thought or Desire, but it comes from the Nothingness, Timeless, Ethereal that he talks about.
ON DIVISION: “psychological time” and “physical time” they are not the same thing, so there is no division. They are two separate things. Physical security is normal. But the need for Psychological security is created by Thought. There are videos that he talks about security.
ON THOUGHT: "Thought has its own place," he said. "We have to use thought to learn language, to speak, to communicate in English." So while talking/discussing we have to use thought. But his Thought doesn't come from the Self (put together by thought). His thought comes from Nothingness, Eternal, Love, Compassion or whatever the Thing is.
ON SECURITY: You said, "I would care (and guess I will always care) if my house burns down!" Yes, you can care, you can think, you can worry, you can be sad, be unhappy, or whatever, but the house had already burned down. It's a FACT! Unless you don't accept that fact, than you would try to change that FACT to ILLUSION. It becomes Illusion when the brain starts to create images of the house being OK or try to project that the house is actually not burned down. When one tries to change the FACT, that is when suffering happens. The harder thought try to change the FACT, the more pain it gets. That is an example of attachment in action?
Hope the explanation helps to some extend.
If you have not already, listen to this discussion might help. If one understands the whole thing in the discussion, it's Over.

After all the ideas about being religious and spirituality K. is under no illusion that the religious mind is very factual mind. This seems to cut through any fantasising, any illusion of personal experience. Does that mean the religious is totally free from all experience in which the illusory self has subsided. Asking what this means with all of our energy and waiting for the outcome, waiting, waiting, waiting is all there is.

Human beings aren't perfect, neither is Krishnamurti. Others have pointed out that what he said is merely an expression. If you search for errors in his speeches, you will find them, but instead of looking for errors you should be looking for whether you can learn something from this man, something you can acknowledge as true yourself, despite his minor errors.
