    I stopped looking and my bank account has been happier since. Helps that I found one that hasn’t left my wrist in five months. Finding “the one”, even if it’s not perfect, has been a revelation.

    Formex are on my want list. I think the use of accessible movements is a positive, easy to service. Not sure if anything is holding them back, but have seen comments on their name being like a washing up liquid or car part manufacturer. Doesn't bother me personally

    I was also intrigued by that unusual Glycine field/pilot moon phase but the blue Combat Sub 39mm won me over. It's like if a Black Bay, a Squale and a Submariner had a baby. It's a completely different case to the 42's and it's got a date at 6!

    I got the Casio A1100 two weeks after it came out. I respect Casio hugely as a brand (I actually have a top-of-the-range e-piano from Casio standing in my living room), but I've never liked their designs. I find them cluttered, clumsy, far too much redundant writing, awkward colour schemes. This is different. It is a really classy, nice-looking 80s retro watch, and I very much enjoy wearing it as a beater, e.g. when I'm running.

    "the manufacturer they're using for these is one that makes dials for Grand Seiko"
    Wait a minute, I thought Grand Seiko production is all in house, or vertically integrated, as they say. Is that not the case?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 месяцев назад +1

      I could be wrong, I heard it from an Orient Dealer. They said the dials are made in Shinshu at a facility called Toki no Takumi Kobo. Supposedly they make the snowflake and a few other dials for GS there.
      Now like I said I don't know for sure, but it's also possible that this is a Seiko owned facility. Orient is part of the greater Seiko family through Epson. From what I remember there is also a lot of overlap within companies as well. With Epson manufacturing movements for Seiko. In fact I think an Espon division even makes the Spring Drives for Grand Seiko. I remember seeing that on the Spring Drive wiki page.
      But again, take all this with a grain of salt. I'm not 100% sure.
      -quick edit
      Just looked up a few things. I think the place is also called The Shinshu Watch Studio.
      www.grand-seiko.com/us-en/worldofgrandseiko/manufacture/shinshuwatchstudio
      The fist sentance on that page says it's a "Seiko Epson" Facility.

    A while ago I sold a kidney and my firstborn to acquire the spectacular The Citizen AQ4100-06W 'Ibuki' with a green Tosa Washi Tengujoshi paper dial. It's my grail watch and, IMHO, on equal footing with GS quartz in every way: materials, build quality, finishing, attention to detail. But less expensive, and using Eco Drive. Citizen's premium 'The Citizen' line is fairly regularly augmented by new models (dials), and is squarely aimed at the GS quartz line.

    Love the power reserve orients, but like many others out there the Roman numeral is a turn off. I bought a regular orient power reserve and it’s good so far.
    The titanium ds action diver is a 38mm which I think feels a little strange and I love the bracelet color but heard it’s poorly made.
    And finally, that black glycine moonphase had potential. I just couldn’t pull trigger due to cheap looking dial, eyesore of a date window and 40mm size like it’s some sort of field watch. Didn’t like that. Moonphase should be dressy IMO.

      Although it is entirely possible it is a Seiko owned factory, and they are going to make some for the Orient too. They are all part of the larger Seiko family.

    I'm also interested to try a Formex, but the biggest one we have in common is the Citizen. AQ4091-56L (blue dial) has been living in my head for a couple years now. I finally bought my 1st Citizen recently (ref. AT6080-53L), and it's such a great watch for ~$400 it made me all the more curious to try the AQ4091. The AT6080-53L feels like "exit watch" material to me (in the "beater" category), and I bet the AQ4091 can fill the "casual" slot for me (and it could serve as a dress watch in such a rare situation). As I continue to simplify my collection and zero in on my preferences, I may end up with a couple Citizens in prominent roles.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 месяцев назад +1

      The blue AQ4091 looks the best, but I found a deal on a like new black one. The black one seems like a SARB033 type watch. One that can fill just about any role. Plus it's the ultimate grab-and-go quartz. High Accuracy and Perpetual Calendar.

    • @vonkruel
      @vonkruel 5 месяцев назад

      @@RelativeTimeI might jump at a deal on the black dial as well because it's always a safe color. I'm not even sure if I have my heart set on the blue. I got a black dial PRX and I've never regretted that. I agree a perpetual calendar is a fantastic feature on watch with analog dial & hands, and it's one of the things that attracted me to the AT6080. It's not a HAQ, but the H100 is a fantastic movement. Traveling? No problem, you can move forward or back in 1-hour increments _with no interruption to timekeeping_ , as you can also do on AQ4091 I'm sure. Bulova also makes nice HAQ movements with a smooth sweeping second hand (8 Hz equivalent), but let's see them put one in a watch that I really want to wear. Their Jet Star line are well sized, but none of them really grab me. For ultimate convenience in a regularly worn watch, I feel I do want solar charging anyway.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 месяцев назад

      @@vonkruel I didn't know that one had the jumping hour too. Good to know.
      I thought that was a genius idea with this one. Like you said.. traveling and Daylight savings. No problem. Then with the HAQ you could probably go 6 or so years before having to reset it. Maybe longer.

    Been obsessing over a few watch for like 6 months. Including the Formex Essence Malachite, Farer Lander IV, Christopher Ward Sealander C63, and I still have the Bulova Jet Star on my list. However, as always seems to happen l I got to try on a couple of watches when I was bored one day including the Seiko SPB237J1 and just loved it. So ended up buying it in Chrono24 plus the seller did me a great deal on an Alpinist at the same time. Then I finally cracked by backing the Loresum LS04 after being so tempted by the LS03. So pretty much used all my budget for this year. Only way I'm getting one of the Forex, Farer or CW is by selling some watches so let's see what's not used much in the first half of the year. Great video and wow really like the TSAO Baltimore watches, especially the Steel Torsk-Diver.

    • @UGA.D
      @UGA.D 5 месяцев назад

      It's great. I think my three favorite things are red, titanium, and no date and this has all three. It's very lightweight and it has a short lug to lug making it feel compact even though I don't have a small wrist. The numerals are actually blocks of lume like you'd see on a Tudor or the new Oris ProPilot. The internal bezel was a little wonky when I got it but it seems to have sorted itself out after I rotated it many, many times. I also ponyed up for the titanium bracelet. That may be the weakest part. It's lightweight and the finishing as well done, but the clasp isn't very impressive. Still, it's not a requirement to obtain the bracelet when purchasing one of the new aqua compressors.

    What's with all the little watches 36 38?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 месяцев назад

      Generally, I prefer a 40 (give or take), but it depends. So here with Farer they do have a larger 40mm, but they don't have the same design as the 36 one in black. With Formex there is a 42 and a 39.5, and I like closer to 40. With that one Omega, that's the only way it came. Same with the Maen Brooklyn.
      As for the Certina, I am more curious. Plus I think there would be more interest from a review standpoint.

      @@RelativeTime I saw them in BIC Camera a few times for around ¥300k. So that's around $1800 but they usually throw in 10% tax free and a little extra (3-7%). Hope this helps.

    So many good looking watches!! I like the Yema, the Maen and the Formex.
    The watches I am always looking at are the Christopher Ward Super Compressor on their greenish/blueish dial, a Meistersinger Metris black dial, and a Longines Zulu Time green dial.

      @@RelativeTime None of that shite, that's for sure. You should encourage people to reach for a real watch, a watch they can hand down to a child. A watch that you don't throw away because it needs a service. Ideally a Rolex. Yes they are expensive, but most of us can save for one - it might take a few years for some, but having a fuck-off watch on your wrist is a life-long pleasure, especially if you have enough interest in horology as to be watching RUclips videos. In the meantime, one or two G-Shocks will serve for many years, providing real value for a modest outlay. Some ideas for sub-200 quid watches might be (1) CASIO G-Shock GA-2100HC-4AJF, The Orange Hidden Coast is gorgeous, and will last forever. (2) The Casio AE1200 costs 30 quid, but if you bump your spend up to 200 quid, you can transform it into a fantastic watch with SKXMOD parts. Basically, keep most of your money for that heirloom piece. Don't waste it on garbage.

    Shane have you seen the new Vario ocean themed single hand watch? I bought one and it is quirky with some interesting details. You and I share an interest in the quirky and the unusual. I love all of my Vario watches and this one is sort of special. I got the deep ocean blue with the blue Vario leather strap. Check out the crown shaped like a sailor hat and the second hand that look like a compass. Just lots to explore on this one. Great watch for a retiree, a sailor, or someone who isn’t always concerned with the precise time. I have plenty of watches like that. This one is just fun! Thanks for your excellent content! The only problem is that you are a great watch salesman. You have sold me on quite a few great watches.

      Funny you should mention that. Was just getting some footage of it. Ivan sent me a light blue one a month ago. I'm hoping to get to it soon. When he told me he was working on a new Navi, a one-handed watch was the last thing I was thinking of. I thought it was going to be a new version of the jumping hour one he had before.

      @@RelativeTime I’m looking forward to your review on that watch. It seemed that you mentioned living in the Dallas area. All 4 of my siblings live in suburbs of Dallas like Coppell, The Colony, and one moved to Tyler. My business kept me from pulling up stakes to join them. I see that you must be a SA fan too. I have several of their fine products and I live in Geneseo, Illinois the home of SA. I saw one of their accessories in one of your photos. By the way, you produce some of the best photography shots on watches that I have seen. I am an amateur photographer too and enjoy shooting birds, other nature shots, landscapes, and some macro. That too is an expensive hobby. Mine all seem to be. I also like the way that you showcase the watches with various straps. Keep up the excellent work. Thanks for all that you do!
