I was there in the 90s, bought a Roland Juno 106 with a faulty voice chip (common) and a dint in it for about USD $200. I sold it years ago (for about $600) and have been using the TAL UNO-LX for the last few years, no regrets. It sounds so damn good, almost identical, is cheap, takes up almost no space and the developer is great, plenty of regular updates. I also have the TAL J-8 (Jupiter 8) which is so good! I no longer want the 40 year old originals, too expensive, too much maintenance, takes up too much room!
Great video! A good use for the LFO-envelope trigger is generative sounds, or if you want a long-held note with S&H for example, but still want the gate of the envelope to pluck :)
I have to say I got this 2 weeks ago.. & I too have been hooked again on the old 90's Goa. I grew up there 80-90's so its perticulary special to me. I love this synth! I had a SH101 a few years back & I loved it then.. I just love this plugin xD
Probably the one and only piece of gear I'll never consider selling under any circumstances :D Great video as usual ! :) lots of useful tricks for this beast
@@olliepsy Cheers ! Been an avid follower of your videos for ages :D Behringer's MS-101 is REALLY good, pretty cheap to boot, so yeah you cannot go wrong with it :)
Nice review and track at the end Ollie! We still love this great sounding virtual instrument from TAL. With the poly, Microtuning, MPE and FM features is has many tricks up its sleeve. Even more that you would imagine by just judging its cover =)
@@olliepsy Yes, full tracks are definately possible. In fact we also created a bunch of tracks with this fun and easy to use synth! Looking forward to you other TAL-reviews!
Only if it had a pitch envelope, I would much rather that instead of the poly function. seems like such an obvious move to modernise a classic mono synth. This still hasn't stopped me from using it in every single track I make. The best £50 investment I've made for sure. Great video btw
I agree on this one, I think Arturia's take is the best so far, they keep the original interface / functions intact then you have a little advanced menu that opens up extra enveloppes / LFOs etc...
Just realized that bitwig has now also some BW-101 presets where someone replicated the SH-101 in the Grid. It was easy to extend the patch with Filter-FM. While I could replicate some of the sounds in your video, the filter does not sound the same (the patch uses a Low-pass LD) - using the 4pole XP imho sounds much closer. Luckily, thats easy to swap.
I just checked those presets and I totally agree on the filter, I feel that both the 4pole XP & the Sallen Key 4pole LP sounds soo good, slightly different but fits the job better ;) I feel that all of Bitwig's filters are smooth and shy if that makes sens ? like the filter on the SH101 emulation by Tal is pretty naughty and gritty, the ones on Bitwig doesn't get to that level of grittiness (hope that makes sens)
I have Avenger, Dune3, FM8... a whole bunch of awesome plugins. But for some weird reason, I just can't help using also the BassLine 101 in all my compositions, in spite of its limitations as compared to all the above-mentionned plugins ... To top it off, I also have D16 Group's Lush101 which is also a SH101 emulation on steroids, with polyphonie and FX... Go check it out, its only drawback is that it has a limited arpegiator which is not as versatile as the Bassline's.
That track at the end 🤯 You captured the spirit of 90s Goa Trance so accurately and beautifully. More please :)

I totally agree as my first judgement was the same, then I spent some time with it and I realized you can make a full track with it !!
