      We've gone from one extreme to the other. Back then, there was a huge backlash against the "big servers" and how they were killing the game. It's one of the major reasons why the courts were slowed down - this is s highlights reel. Much of the rest of the match would have been very boring - ace after ace. It was a particular problem at Wimbledon. I remember one newspaper headline about the 1993 final: "Bored on the fourth of July".

    • @mtklaric
      @mtklaric 2 года назад +8

      @@th8257 I get your point, BUT back then you had 5 different court types. The clay season, where you had baseline play and long points like today, you had grass season where the spainards regularely skipped grass where a different type of style dominated (Sampras, Goran, Becker, Edberg, etc...), then hardcourt season, then carpet, then hard again in Australia etc....But now, the whole year seems like clay season! And because of that everybody plays the SAME!

      Often depends which country the TV video originated from. In those days, USA broadcasters (and I think Japan too) used a system called NTSC which had much lower picture quality. Europe (where this is obviously from) used a system called PAL which had noticeably higher picture quality. Think that explains a lot of it. American TV pictures in particular could be pretty awful back then.

    Just count how many players with single handed backhands left in today's tennis, and you will surely say serve and volley has become extinct. It's a pity.

    Either of these guys - near their peaks would have given any of the big 3 fits i rekon !! Unlike most of todays players , these guys had all court games

    Lots of comments about how "tennis was better" then. That's certainly not how it was viewed at the time. Back in the 90s there was a huge backlash against the "big servers" and how they were killing the game. It's one of the major reasons why the courts were slowed down. This is a highlights reel. Much of the rest of the match would have been very boring - ace after ace. It was a particular problem at Wimbledon. I remember one newspaper headline about the 1993 final: "Bored on the fourth of July". We've gone too far the other way with playing styles, but let's not get too "rose tinted spectacles" about the past, shall we?

      Ok, but you need to make a distinction between grass and indoor carpet or hard. The bounce though lowish was consistent on carpet and hard and there were a lot of long rallies. Watch the 1988, 1995, 1996 ATP Finals / RR matches. The surfaces were medium to medium fast and gave equal opportunity to both baseliners as well as serve volleyers/ all court players. Wimbledon grass became boring because of big servers and a low inconsistent bounce without rallies. Not carpet or hardcourts. There was no need to slow everything down. Only grass needed to be fixed. Incidentally the 100 rye grass today is not faster but has a higher bounce but they have slowed down the balls too. Conversely clay plays mych faster because of lighter balls. Key word is homogenized play across surfaces. Indoor tennis is boring today, though clay is more interesting. The fastest surface today is the USO Laykold surface
