It's inspiring to see how much Rich has gone through in his journey, and I agree-his training and recovery updates are a big part of his story. It makes me wonder, though: do you think focusing too much on our current physical state might distract us from growth in other areas, like mental resilience or emotional stability? How do you balance physical recovery with developing other aspects of your life? It seems like a constant challenge.

36:04 You hit the nail squarely on the fkn head, Ryan. I came to that conclusion a year ago. It has always been a part of the American psyche, however, since the 80s, many prominent politicians have fanned the flames of that political and cultural philosophy. The result is where we are today. One of the reasons why the social support system has been successful in countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway is due to the fact that a strong sense of community has been part of the national consciousness for centuries. It will take generations to undo the damage done to the American soul over the past 30-40 years.

It's interesting to consider how justice ties into personal growth. Often, we think of justice in a societal sense, but what about applying it to our own actions? How do we ensure we're being just with ourselves in terms of discipline and self-improvement? Do we hold ourselves accountable as we would expect from others? Would love to hear your thoughts on how we can balance justice with personal development.

The objective is not to signal virtue, it’s to embody virtue. The cause of the pejorative connotation around “virtue signaling,” and “social justice warriors” is the hypocrisy. Accountability is a standard you hold yourself to. And nobody’s perfect, but if you flagrantly disregard the standard you hold others to, people will naturally have a negative reaction to that.

You have tiny groups of individuals manufacturing things like modern day racism and sexism by disguising them as systematic issues that appeal more to persuasion there for creating the system representing those individual issues

I've come to learn how important obligations are... In all aspects. Naivete seems to be quite common because there seems to be a lack of consequence, but that might be a bit of my cynicism 😂 we have made irony important in the meaning of ridicule
Keeping your word means I will keep God’s word and the living word, the Bible. I will not reject those things that are true. We put too much weight on ourselves, as Christians. A christian perspective.
I like to use the water bottle analogy.. hold a water bottle in front of you. The water bottle represents the truth of all things; human nature, the universe, life, ect. Me, the person holding the water bottle represents the observer or point of perception. Now find someone to be a second observer and ask them to describe the water bottle in the greatest detail possible. And I'll do the same.. although looking at the same water bottle we each have a completely different perspective. We are both right and wrong about the truth of the matter. (Pun intended) Philosophies and religions strive for the truth. Some believe their perspective is closer to the truth. And it may be, but It's our responsibility to continue expanding our awareness and perception to see the bigger picture. Continue observing and we will see that there is truth in all of them. And they are all there to help us 'BE', better.

Regarding the issue, wherein, individuals are quick to say someone is “virtue signaling” - also important to point out the individuals on the right in particular - utilize that - some wittingly some unwittingly - as a strawman to undermine/not deal with, deny, what are very real issues.
As Laertius wrote over 1800 years ago, "Stoics have nothing to say about happiness, in general or specific." Epicureans had it figured out in antiquity and stoics were a bit of a joke, considered by most to be hypocrites more concerned with "appearing stoic" for the sake of self-aggrandizement. Little has changed. It's sad that such an empty school of philosophy had such a resurgence, and the irony is that it had a resurgence because Stoicism tells its followers that they are tougher or stronger than others and there is an appeal to being told that. "Ego is the enemy." Indeed.
"Stoicism tells its followers that they are tougher or stronger than others" Really? I'm rather a fan of stoicism, and it always seemed to me to make a cardinal virtue of humility. Could you give me some examples of where stoisicm tells its followers to look down on others?
@@incurableromantic4006 Ofcourse it doesn't tell them to do so explicitly, no more than Christianity tells its faithful to judge sinners, and yet the world is so. But when your core philosophy is about building up an outer wall, about tolerating the intolerable, and accepting suffering, it isn't long before the practitioner feels to have risen above the rest of humanity, regardless of how many admonitions for humility are included. This is self-evident with the modern popularity of Stoicism. It tells its practitioner they are strong and strong willed, and is thus attractive to those who want that trait or want others to believe they possess it. Wearing stoicism on your sleeve is, after all, quite popular and profitable in the 21st century.
@@NikeonaBike Well, any moral or philosophical movement that becomes popular enough will inevitably attract some people to it for negative reasons - but that's a problem with human nature, not with the movement itself.

They speak a lot about happiness, however sometimes (fairly or not) criticize the epicureans for seeking a shallow personal happiness in physical comfort (the stoics were big on being involved in one’s community through public service ), a selfish happiness, by avoiding all potential sources of disturbance ( such as marrying and raising a family) . Seneca said “True happiness is... to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future.” Zeno said man’s work was the practice of virtues, which alone produces happiness. So yeah just a little bit there just to counter your characterization of the stoic school, which I think is not at all accurate .
Their work is complete when self-tyranny arrives. No longer needing to tyrannize from the outside because you’re doing the work for them from the inside. Definitely not better

Agreed. People know what they must do, but it is just hard and uncomfortable to do it. So they watch stuff like this because it feels like they are making progress....when in fact they aren't. Wow a silver platter telling another silver platter how to stay shinny. Can we get some Goggins to cleanse ourselves.
....people choose to do stoasim when the algorithm recommends it 😂😂😂😂😂
If these two dudes don't understand why virtue signaling is a slur, they're high on their own supply and totally out of touch
I would like to hear you both frame all these questions with Christianity. Open a bible and find answers.

I love stoicism, but I wish Ryan would not push his political views in his work so much. Read the examples he uses in his books closely and you will get a clear sense of his political views.
I feel the same way.
When you pursue vertue and fight evil it's hard to support Democrat
Couldn’t agree more
If doing the right thing, the righteous thing in the civilized thing is pushing politics, you may want to consider the politics that you subscribe to.
Maybe it’s your politics that’s the problem. They don’t align with stoic values.
lots of mutual fellatio..
So much of today's 'life advice' is just a re hash of old ideas put into modern words. Not just this but the majority of podcasts. There are many watching but very few are actually using the advice in their lives. Such a waste of time while also getting these people richer than you.
The podcast was good until they free speech part. These guys are not the last word on the first amendment, and there is a big difference between philosophical free speech and constitutional free speech. Unfortunately there is an obvious bias being presented which is oh so PC. Stick to the stuff where you inform instead indoctrinate. Otherwise, good stuff.
This dude is a liberal 🤡
Neither of these guys are actual Stoics lol 😂
Its all crap
How can this guy without experiencing real life coach us silly fools
All bullshit
People do not need podcast like this to grow or change its all about what is within us
Hmmm... having a really bad day, huh?
Read the original books, letters from a stoic is my favourite, this guy is just a salesman.
Agreed. People know what they must do, but it is just hard and uncomfortable to do it. So they watch stuff like this because it feels like they are making progress....when in fact they aren't. I know because I have been doing this for 6 months now, and have realised that all this so called knowledge is just a re hash of ancient thinking. Platitudes, nothing more. Similarly for Modern Wisdom podcast. People need to get outside and live again.

You use the term “bro” like an 11 year old
