Pisses me off every time I think about it that these guys weren't bigger in the states. Devin has got to be one of the most underrated musicians of all time. His career and level of fame couldn't be more perfect, actually. He can still go to Walmart and be furious about it just like us.
Agreed. I am actually okay with Devin's current level of fame. He is a musician's musician now, and is still going strong. One of my favorite things to do over the last couple of years is watching reaction videos from vocal coaches or composers just to see them lose their minds at his godlike level of talent.
So fucking brilliant! I would have absolutely lost my fucking mind at a strapping show. The New Black is one of my favorite modern heavy metal albums around.
If you listen the kicks, it is quite clear it is live... Unfortunately it is not tight enough, the patterns is difficult thou but still... If it was RVP behind the kit, then it would be just like in studio or better... That guy is a machine.
Some of the backing tracks sound just a bit too studio, so they may have been mixed in either live by the keyboardist (???) or (most likely) in post production of the video
My 2 favourite songs that autoplay into each other… this being the second….. thank you. Jesus, I miss my teens! What fucking year was this! Bought City when I was 16 when it came out. You are all my children.
Probably just poor editing when they put the video together. The audio will be taken from the mixing desk and video is from the camera which won't record sound, they are completely separate entities
I am pretty sure they are using pre-recorded vocals for Jed and Bryan. SYL used them for the song directly after this: In the Rainy Season. Also, they sound exactly like the album. Having heard some of their live backing vocals on other songs like Relentless and Wrong Side, I think it is highly unlikely they would be able to harmonize so perfectly live. But I think Devin live and sounds great.
fuck i miss SYL live!! They use to ruin the HOB and Galaxy in OC epic shows! Dev spit on me!! ...thats what i was sayin in high school back then! When they still opened with Velvet & All Hail \m/
If I'm right Devon plays an open C# tuning not an open D tuning.....someone below slammed another on his tuning......just saying.......his tuning is based on "Friends" on Led Zeppelin 3......
well my first instinct is to defend my favorite drummer in the world, mr danny carey. but honestly there are tons of very talented drummers out there, and a lot of it is preference. what constitutes skill? strength? speed? creativity? song writing? ironically someone recently suggested mars volta so ill give it a shot. and beauford has more than a couple good fills. lol. have a great day!
+wosko It's open C with low G which is GCGCGCE. He had open C tuning at most of the songs since the album you said then started using 7 string since Alien. He also use one or half step lower tuning whether in 6 or 7-strings since his "Project".
You MUST be joking? Even Devin himself seems fairly dismissive of it. From what I gather, the main reason they even wrote and released that album was because they were contractually obliged to do so. Not saying there aren't a couple decent songs on it, but if you think that 'The New Black' is their best album, I can't help but feel you've missed the point of what Strapping Young Lad was even about. Have another listen to City, Alien and the self titled album. Those are where it's at.
Yeah even Devin says that City was the ultimate album, ALTOUGH, he also stated that even tho City is like "right there" he feels extremely proud of Alien. But I personally gave a listen to the New Black and these guys were far beyond the top of their league right there.
He's used tracks since the 90's. Not as a cheat, but a way to bring the sound he wants live. He's even toured with a computer on stage next to him in recent years. With the screen facing the audience.

Most people can't handle fame. He seems do be doing fine and having fun. What more do you want from life?
What an amazing voice he has.
"Stop clapping!"
*clapping intensifies*
Clapping Young Lad! :D
You're so belligerent!
Then Dev starts clapping 🤪
You are supposed to hadbang, damnit. But look at how precise they clap. They all got rythm.
Dude at 3:11 is probably having one of the best and most memorable times of his life.
Man i miss them so much
So fucking brilliant! I would have absolutely lost my fucking mind at a strapping show. The New Black is one of my favorite modern heavy metal albums around.
The one and only Gene Hoglan! Awesome as fuck!

Devin = the Skullet= Amazing!!! Evil Genius!!
this sounds so professional, hard to believe its live, i mean im sure its mastered well but still
If you listen the kicks, it is quite clear it is live... Unfortunately it is not tight enough, the patterns is difficult thou but still... If it was RVP behind the kit, then it would be just like in studio or better... That guy is a machine.
Thats for sure !! Never heard a so professional live sound before
@@squidcaps4308 what are you talking about? Hoglan is way above Ryan, no disrespect to RVP, he's fantastic, but no.
Some of the backing tracks sound just a bit too studio, so they may have been mixed in either live by the keyboardist (???) or (most likely) in post production of the video
Devin, what a fucking icon.
That's Drew at 3:12!, from the For Those Aboot to Rock DVD. He sang on Far Beyond Metal
My 2 favourite songs that autoplay into each other… this being the second….. thank you. Jesus, I miss my teens! What fucking year was this! Bought City when I was 16 when it came out. You are all my children.
Fucking great show, I keep revisiting it everyday since 2010
Devon is one world class performer, unbelievable
"Nice sombrero by the way. Full fucking metal." 🤣🤣🤣

True friendship at 6:52
For some reason at 07:04 I started to look away cause that look gave me chills. Apparently he sees something we don't
The camera and a sea of people
3:11 Devin Townsend, or the only man who can be on stage and in the public at the same time ... Well done, schizophren bro !
2:01 is when Download delivered exactly what that song needed at that moment
My speakers are LOVING this all 5 of 'em!

3:11 isn't Drew from the Far Beyond Metal off For Those Aboot To Rock???
Yo I also thoght so !
Stopp clapping :D :D :D and they stopped ;-) one of the Best songs of SYL
This music for me is The music more agressive in the world! the end is so powerfull and heavy!
Devin, Jed, Gene & Byron
..and then they all started clapping again. So belligerent ;-P
''Hey!..nice sombrero, full fucking metal man'' HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Amazing performance, but does it look like the backing vocals don’t line up with the guitarists singing them? Or is it just me
Does look like he's lip syncing a tad.
Probably just poor editing when they put the video together. The audio will be taken from the mixing desk and video is from the camera which won't record sound, they are completely separate entities

5:40 to 5:45 is fucking incredible.
+wosko No, it's in GCGCGCE
fuck i miss SYL live!! They use to ruin the HOB and Galaxy in OC epic shows! Dev spit on me!! ...thats what i was sayin in high school back then! When they still opened with Velvet & All Hail \m/
02:34 the clapping have a distortion vibe and made it some how better at this point and when it stopped something wasnt right
If I'm right Devon plays an open C# tuning not an open D tuning.....someone below slammed another on his tuning......just saying.......his tuning is based on "Friends" on Led Zeppelin 3......

U are correct sir.

Where was this filmed ?
The clapping always fucks me up
but if you were high you would have noticed the screw up near the end of the song
5:40 full insanity
xdjj great concert.
I do. The fuck up was in the best part.

Sure looks like him!
Devin plays his 7 string in GCGCFAD not D for anything since heavy as a really heavy thing
+wosko It's open C with low G which is GCGCGCE. He had open C tuning at most of the songs since the album you said then started using 7 string since Alien. He also use one or half step lower tuning whether in 6 or 7-strings since his "Project".
Devy had a sharp edge then
good quality on youtube finally!
"stop clapping" ::DD
REUNION NOW !!!!!
No, non taken. You didn't develop your ears enough to distinguish different sounds in noisy song. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have a melody.

@@TheNewBerser the new Black is not their top.... however is an album that is over the media....
pre recorded backing vocals
