- It's hard to isolate these games into one genre, but I've created this list of some old-school, arena-style shooters you might like. Every game mentioned is available on Xbox Game Pass as of the publication date.

Hope you guys enjoy this one. I'm still waiting on the new camera (my old one stopped working).
Until then I can only make capture-specific content. The camera should arrive before August.
Definitely make more videos in this series man, I found it really interesting to hear your thoughts on some games I love and, also cant get on with.
btw I would recommend only going for 2013 Shadow Warrior, Shadow warrior 2 grabbed rpg elements including the annoyingly spongy enemies if that's not a problem then by all means enjoy Shadow Warrior 2.
As a matter of fact, I would be interested in more coverage of the Game Pass library.
Framerater, you should use BOTH of your fists in Prodeus.
"Prodeus" and "Proteus" are two games that thematically oppose each other and everytime I search for either one of them, I'll often confuse one for the other.
I guess in their own ways they both calm the player. At least both now stick in the back of my head for these searches alone.
Good video. I always loved Doom 64's soundtrack. It's overall a really underrated game and conically it's the real Doom 3.
Jumping from 64 to 3 is a much less jarring transition than Jumping from 2 to 3
@@whyishoudiniyep- never really thought about that but you’re right. the darker visuals move all the way into too dark to see visuals lol
@@whyishoudinigood point
@whyishoudini True. Even though the OG DOOM 3 was one scary ride with the light or gun decision making.
I'm glad you're starting to look into more modern releases. That'll really help you out to branch onto newer subjects to talk about.
Oh, hell yeah I'd like to see more of these! I always discover some new awesome games with the Framerater's lists!
Me too brother, would love to see one of these for ps premium as well, unless there is and I didn't see it lol.
Awesome video! Keep the game pass coverage coming!
great video dude, i'd love to see more coverage of other gamepass games, i always love to see your opinions on these obscure games, as well as the fact it exposes me to these games i'd never had heard of otherwise
Roboquest is an underrated Gem, been recommending it for years, glad to see it getting some appreciation on Gamepass.
Xbox is surprisingly robust when it comes to the ol' shoot genre. Quake, Prey, Crysis, Duke Nukem 3D, Gears 5, Ion Fury, Wolfenstein, Bulletstorm, Rage, Zombie Army, Serious Sam, Titanfall 2 and Project Warlock are other standouts in the genre to lookout for.
Bulletstorm isn't on Game Pass is it? I've been wanting to try that one for years.
@@FrameRater I think it is. You should definitely try it, it's lots of fun. There's even a Duke Nukem DLC. I jever finished it, unfortunately.
Nice video! Always fun to watch some Framerater and yeah, definitely do another one related to Gamepass games
No multiolayer option in Doom 64 is a bummer, considering the 2 Doom rereleases didn't even have Online multiplayer, just strictly Local Multiplayer.
If they want realistic doom multiplayer they should require a proper Novell Netware network.
@@JeffreyPiatt
Well, if they wanted Doom multiplayer, they should have had an online option as well from the get go.
Great video man. More gamepass vids could be cool!
one of the reasons Doom 64's gameplay is slower is because the ticrate was lowered from 35 to 30 to match with the N64. many things were edited to compensate for that, but it's still slightly slower overall
been a hot minute since I've been on our series s, but may have to look up some of these! Prodeus might scratch that doom/quake itch from the looks of it.
Doom 64 has incredible sound design. It's worth playing for that alone.
Im not sure if these games are on game pass but ive been playing quite a few "boomer" shooters i wanted to share.
Nightmare Reaper - Doom styled with tons of weapons and has randomly generated levels.
Amid Evil - Magic based fps alot like Hexen.
HROT - its alot like Dusk.
BPM - Rhythm fps like Hellsinger. Its a rougelike.
The Citadel - Semi tactical Doom type shooter. It has more stealthy and thoughtout combat with leaning over covers. My only complaint is has anime girl robots as you kill them which is a little weird but the gameplay is fun.
More coverage of the game pass library please :)
I am so bad at the Rhythm shooters like Metal Hellsinger and BPM
You want to hold fire when using your fists in Prodeus btw! Fast punch flurry! Does a fair amount of damage!
Played s lot of this in co-op, even a lot of the community levels are recommended!
some of the community levels are absolutely outstanding!
@@SimmyBassline Yep some really imaginative stuff!
I think Trepang2 is supposed to release on consoles later this year. Check it out its a F.E.A.R. spiritual successor and its very good with the gunplay elements makes you basically feel like Chow Yun Fat and John Wick combined! It even has dragons breath rounds!!!
I think the only big controversy of Doom64 is the lack of shotgun pump animation
You have to try Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slaye... It's available on Game Pass too, I expected to see it in this video... Pretty much a GOTY nominated title.
I did play it! Didn't feel like it fits among the other games which are arena/horde types. Maybe some other day.
Id be interested in more of this
my biggest problem with Doom 64, as well as the Quake port done by Nightdive (that I ended up refunding due to this), is that they are so BRIGHT, even with the brightness all the way down, they are far, far more brighter and atmosphere ruining than their originals.
I'd recommend turning your monitor brightness down tbh, the original Doom 64 was extremely dark and they took at from us.
Just received Prodeus physical on Switch today.
8:58 You can actually still play L4D and L4D2 on modern Xbox consoles through backwards compatibility.
Hello FrameRater, are you going to make a video about emulation on Nintendo switch? It would be a very interesting video ^^
Shadow Warrior 3 gets pretty insane once you get the Egg level, i had to reset a couple of times from checkpoints, mostly from being stuck in walls, and being swarmed by enemies, but once you get used to the enemy spawns it's not too bad, but it's definitely a lot harder than 2, outside of the boss fights, which seemed much fairer in 2 than 3, but had tons of health to balance things a bit.
Loving Robo Quest. Wish mp was active.
I cannot believe it's 2023 and we are still pulling bullshit like re-releasing a game with a LOWER framerate. This is insane to me because I remember when the PS3 had a glut of HD re-releases, that the selling point was that the framerates were usually increased.
I am not saying 30FPS is bad, it can look very nice for some games, but for a fast paced FPS? I mean for eff's sake, Titanfall 2 runs at 60 on the freaking SteamDeck.
Never ever should graphics come before FPS because that's what we did in the 90s on the PS1 and N64 and those games are some of the hardest to go back to.
No one is looking at Perfect Dark HD and thinking "Oh this is good, but I wish it ran at 15fps"
I like the stuff you make on retro consoles more
I second your recommendations for Shadow Warrior 3, Metal Hellsinger, and Doom 64. They're pretty addictive; even after beating them, I got all the achievements for them, something I don't do very often with other games.
I would personally recommend, if you're looking for shooters of the non retro-inspired variety, Titanfall 2 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. I know Halo is a little controversial among retro fps fans, but they're pretty solid games, especially the original trilogy.
Keep up the good work covering Game Pass, it certainly has games that go overlooked.
Awsome video as always frame, as someone who is an xbox fan (I own all consoles so that can give you an idea of how much of an xbox freak I am) I want to thank you for letting us know about this games, now If you’ll excuse I have some boomer shooters to play 😎
XBOX 💚
The XSS version of SW3 was recently patched so it can once again run at 60fps. This was sometime in June 2023 tbf.
Weird, I recorded days before posting (late June) and it wasn't running at 60fps.
@@FrameRater maybe it's in the form of a performance mode that needs to be selected now? I have it on XSX but I also have an enormous backlog lol. I just recall seeing news about an XSS specific patch last month, fixing the downgrades of the 'Definitive' Edition.
Great video btw. Gotta love all the 90's and 90's style shooters around on console. I only recently discovered that Marathon Durandal was ported to XBLA (and backwards compatible), as well as a Chasm remaster, which I'd never even heard of back in the day. My finger is clearly not on the pulse these days lol
If you want a good co op zombie game I recommend Zombie Army 4. I love it's campy horror aesthetic, it's enemy variety and it's satisfying gunplay. The only big issue it has is it's over reliance on DLC.
We boomshootin' tonight, boys.
Oh no you missed Slayers X 😅
I did play it! Didn't feel like it fits among the other games which are arena/horde types. Maybe some other day.
Postal Brain Damage is a really good "retro-boomer-shooter", that's my recommendation
Great Video ! I ABSOLUTELY love Prodeus ! And Doom 64 is a true horror classic unlike the new Doom games that are not scary at all.
More Gamepass content please !
YEAH, FRAME RATER
I wished gamepass worked on Linux so I can use it on my steam deck. I’ve been getting into shooters on it (especially since I can freely use gyro aiming on virtually any game the way that I like it) and being able to do that a little bit more would be nice.
It can work on browser as far as I know.
That's valve's problem
It's fair to say that DOOM 64 is the true DOOM 3, while DOOM 3 feels like a spin-off nowadays. I never cared about those N64 nomenclatures, by the way, Super Mario 64, Quake 64. What happened to all other 60 games between 1, 2 and 3 that we missed out on?
I have never played DOOM 64... My first DOOM experience was when it came out on the 32X. Goofy SEGA fan boy kept me from it but lately I really want to play it! The only thing I don't like about D64 is the way the enemies look when they throw fire balls. It looks like a 5 year old mad he couldn't get mom to buy a toy... Not the look a terrible ball of death needs to terrify you. But all in all I honestly agree with your take on it.
Aye bro, I just had a thought about a certain something I think a lottttt of people would be quite interested in. I just looked into that Serious Sam HD The Next Encounter Mod that never got finished, and saw you commented on a thread made almost 2 years ago... You mentioned you would make a video on it since you were one of the people who were working on it? I'm extremely interested as I too was really excited for that mod. Would like to know more about what happened...
I think most if not everyone involved with that project has long since moved on, so it probably wouldn't be an issue to discuss it. I'll put it on my topic list.
Heck yeah, do more Gamepass stuff, amybe even compare to PS Plus Extra/Premium for comparissons.
Proteus is sadly no longer on GP...😢
Hey so theese are great and all, but Xbox should have gyro in there controllers so they can be even better
I'm old enough to remember the word "retro" means something designed to look like a previous era. Now it seems like "retro" means from a previous era.
From my experience its always been an ambiguous term.
Typically, the term retro is given to items which are at least 20 years old.
So yeah, that means that games from 2003 can now be considered retro.
Xbox has damn near every great FPS ever made on it.
No mention of Slayers X??? WITW
I did play it! Didn't feel like it fits among the other games which are arena/horde types. Maybe some other day.
Back4Blood wasn't even the best Left4Dead style game when it came out. Vermintide 1 and 2 smokes it
Why not boltgun
That's not on Game Pass is it?
@@FrameRater well sadly it’s not it’s a amazing game though
Where's Slayers X? it's the most authentic boomer shooter
I did play it! Didn't feel like it fits among the other games which are arena/horde types. Maybe some other day.
Oof that sucks that they ruined Shadow Warrior 3 like that. I'm so tired of these game devs having tunnel vision in regards to fidelity. I can't speak for everyone but I want smooth running games, I couldn't give less of a shit about fidelity.
Im glad i abuse microsoft rewards lol

Where, in the description? You new to RUclips or something?
Very very very old games.
Gamepass? 😂
