@@youtert Yeah, he used a VI in the video but as someone who’s played one many times I can confidently say that none of the pickup combinations sound anything like this
On 'Fascination Street' even the drums stop in between and start again but not the bass! That is how machine=like and awesome it sounds. Nobody like Simon Gallup. All the other instruments' beauty on this track exists within Simon Gallup's bass playing orbit.
Don’t think this was double tracked but my guess is there was a signal going to his SVT which is the treble/ overdriven part that you hear and the other going to the board which is the low end you hear underneath. Anyways, one of my favorite bass line and it’s really the highlight of the song. Loved playing this to warm up my picking hand before a gig.
it's not even a bass, it's full Fender Bass VI, this why the strings vibrated so much, even if Bob and Simon played Thicker gauge, If I am not wrong Robert's bass VI had 105 E string
@ledufakademy Robert said in interview about fascination street, it's not even a bass it's an instrument between a guitar and bass..... not very accurate but in the video clip Simon is playing a fender VI
@@jean-christophelebachelet5926 Robert was talking about the Fender Bass VI - which is a bass, it's tuned exactly the same as a bass. I have heard Robert describe it this way - but yeah, it's a bass.
@@garybratton7756 It does have that ringy tone to it, like way too much high-mids. It makes them sound sorta clicky like a clock to me, which is why I am just not a fan, I had a copy for a while and unless I rolled off a coil I did not like it, haha. Maybe that is why I like Seventeen Seconds and Faith so much, cause I know they are the P-Bass? I love that classic tone. It is what I've always wanted.
I actually think the black/white stingray is Robert’s. The stingray sound started on the top, and Robert played bass on that record. That bass was then used by Phil on the top tour and then Simon when he rejoined.
@@garybratton7756 Robert doesn't seem to like Stingrays - he is the main reason Simon stopped using them live. In an interview around 1991 he complained that Robert didn't like how jangly they were. Robert tended to use either the P-Bass or Bass VI. There was also video I saw of Robert teaching Phil bass lines for Love Cats and Speak My Language - he was definitely using a Fender bass to do that.
@@endy7432 damn so the bass itself really does matter how the sounding works. Ty so much for that reply now I gotta see how to buy one of those bass hopefully for Christmas 🎄 😩
@@Pogokoala well it kinda does matter but honestly any other bass with a bridge pickup will work good enough, so dont get an entire bass just to play this lmao
This might be one of the most boring isolated tracks to listen to though, because until the end, it never changes! I used to love playing along with this song, cause of the dramatic slides on the low E string. But yeah, he is a damn beast and precise as f*ck.
This is the most resonate bass I've heard. You can hear the strings vibrate. So absolutely powerful.
Bro. Any bass guitar you hear is made by the strings vibrating. All sound is vibration.
@@djrug I know that lol My point was the clarity and fidelity of the bass mix in the song really allows the strings to shine.
@@djrug idiot
@@JuanJimenez-uj6pb 😢😅
I think he's holding his fingers further back from the frets to get that extra twang
The bass itself makes the fascination street incredible.
most dramatic bass sound in rock post punk history
For anyone who wants to cop this tone, it’s a Musicman Stingray with a bit of distortion and the string action set about 0.0005mm off the fretboard
As much as that 😂
From what I've heard it was a Fender Bass VI
@@youtert nah that's a stingray definitely.

This would make a great superhero theme. This is so fucking bad ass
impeccable feel and timing
Wtf how awesome is this like a sexy backbone to the song

Hay canciones de The Cure que no serían esas canciones si no fuera por el bajo. Fascination street, lovecats, hot hot hot, close to me
Lovesong, jumping someone else’s train
Just Like Heaven
Grinding halt
Any tips on getting a more raspy sound like this?
Low action, use a pick. Buy either a Stingray or a Bass VI.
A jazz bass works just fine. Fresh strings imo is what will get you there faster than anything else.
Does anyone know what the tone and setup it is??
There's some distortion, and apparently the strings r extremely close the the fretboard.
a stingray bass, distortion/gain and very high action for the strings
