      @WatchMojo.com GTD hasn't won for Best Director. He was nominated for Pan's Labyrinth on categories - Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Picture and lost to Michael Adamt, Little Miss Sunshine and a German movie The Lives of Others respectively.

    Chalamet should get the Oscar for Lead Actor because the Academy criminally robbed Michael, Armie or Luca of nominations for CMBYN. And if all the acting categories remain uncompetitive (as your post postulates) there is no need to watch the broadcast.

    I’m so glad that not only ‘get out’ got nominated for an Oscar but the fact that they are finally taking a horror as a genre seriously!

      conn1239 well the silence of the lambs sweep in 91 so, horror was a respected... So it's not about respect. Its about horror movies being awful

    • @coletrainhetrick
      @coletrainhetrick 6 лет назад +5

      conn1239 its not a horror movie, it's a thriller, so many people are miscategorizing it. It holds few actual horror elements. Just like how Oculus and Cloverfield are thrillers

    • @conn1239
      @conn1239 6 лет назад +1

      Coletrain Hetrick True I do agree that until the final 30 mins the film is more of a straight up thriller, but even then it’s still good to see that they are not discounting a film many class to be a horror

    • @coletrainhetrick
      @coletrainhetrick 6 лет назад +1

      conn1239 I think a lot of it has to do with the conventions of horror films, especially in modern times, Get Out for sure has commentary on the horror genre and how they have terribly written characters doing illogical and stupid things. You have films like John Carpenters The Thing, Jaws, and the Excorsist getting academy award nominations because of this fact. In other words, most horror movies are not trying to be quality films, other than Don't Breathe and Hush as more recent examples they lack the ability to become complex and meaningful films despite rotting for the character to not die.

  • @beselbic
    @beselbic 6 лет назад +14

    People who are saying that Get Out was nominated in major categories simply for political and diversity reasons to appease a SJW agenda are talking out of their asses. The film has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and was a huge box office hit. The film was also a cultural phenomenon and has already entered the pop-culture lexicon. I hear people reference it all the time: "sunken place," "get out," etc. Also, it's one of those rare horror films that appealed to a lot of people who aren't really into the genre. It will be remembered as a landmark horror film alongside films like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist. Get Out managed to be both a thoroughly entertaining horror film and biting social commentary. It definitely earned those Oscar nods.

      beselbic It proves that people are becoming more just as bad as SJW themselves. As soon as there is a strong female character, or a black person in a movie or game it's political correct for people.

    • @somebodystopme3822
      @somebodystopme3822 6 лет назад

      beselbic I do agree some people get their panties in a twist about this movie being political and whatever but come on, it is in no way an amazing horror film. For one it's hardly a horror film at all and tbh there is nothing special about it. It was a fun and pretty good movie with some smart little bits here and there but it wasn't anything great and it's been overhyped to hell.

    James Franco deserved that snub? So you're telling me that anyone who wants to fuck up my careers or life can accuse me of something being truth or not and I'm done. Oscars are so political and there can be controversy but there is no proof. Of course Oldman most likely will win best actor but no one should be denied a nomination because it's depending in your merits as an actor not person. Plus like I said no proof only controversy.

      Supporting Actress: Allison Janney
      Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe
      I don't know why, but I'm feeling the Academy might pull another "Training Day Scenario" this year, even though Rockwell is the absolute frontrunner.

      Borneo Coolpad Sally Hawkins?? Wow, i respect you for making that call 😂. I just think Frances Mcdormund is more relateable, because her character is more "human". She picked up the SAG award and thats normally an indication that she'll go on to get the Oscar. But if she doesnt win i wont be mad, cause in her last speech at the SAG Awards she said they should give it to younger actors. So i think Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie still have a chance??

    • @borneocoolpad7833
      @borneocoolpad7833 6 лет назад +1

      Conor Eiffe first of all how many times that SAG proven wrong with the Academy, even if she got Clean swept Globes, Bafta and SAG there's still a chance she will not gonna win ( remember Russel Crowe) I just got feelings Sally girl will grab the Oscar

    • @kamakazilee6066
      @kamakazilee6066 6 лет назад

      Borneo Coolpad If she does i wont be mad, i just think Mcdormands character is more relateable, not in the sense of her torching a police station, but in the way that she's fighting for answers and to catch the killer rapist. But again i could be wrong. Whoever wins deserves it, maybe not Meryl Streep

    • @borneocoolpad7833

    Darkest Hour" is so refreshing! No profanity, no violence, and no stupid sex scenes. Last night, I saw Billboards and despised it. Because profanity and violence occupy so many movies, I am generally not a movie fan. However, I loved "Darkest Hour" - a great movie! "Darkest Hour" builds and builds to a climatic ending! Aleksandra I hear ya, as there is a buzz and even re-evaluation around anything that receives so many noms. My comment speaks to the timeless message that those in the shadows of society really do have value. Del Toro presented Hawkins/Jenkins/Spencer’s portrayals as three sides of the same “character.” Themes like that, along with miraculously pulling off a production of this quality for under 20 $million make Del Toro a worthy recipient of the praise he has been receiving.

      Shape of Water was actually the biggest disappointment for me among all the Oscar contenders of this year. When you have a plot that is not very believable and kind of fairy tale like, you kind of have to give in and throw yourself into the movie and just go with it and that's what I did. The problem was the director didn't go out of his way to make the little details real or believable for me at all! Some of the characters especially the villains, were so over the top and contrived for me. He made them so hatable it felt very forced. There were so many plot holes, like how Eliza wasn't detected by the cameras during her first few visits in that merman room and only became concerned with the cameras in the end, or when the merman escapes and ends up in the movie theater which conveniently was totally empty and in the process leaving bloody handprints all over without one single person seeing him, or when they were making love in the bathroom and a few towels were strong enough to hold all the water until it filled up the entire bathroom. I felt like some of these scenes were kind of insulting to my intelligence. Too much overacting from the main bad guy and that sex scene was so unnecessary and also that stupid Russian side plot was also quite boring and unnecessary. Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkings, who are both very fine actors, do not deserve to be nominated because their characters were quite bland and not at all difficult to play. Overall the characters and the tone of the movie were just too cheesy for me and felt almost like a pale imitation of Amelie (with a merman). Again I thought the premise was quite interesting, just wish the director executed it better.

      I appreciate the thoughtful response, Stu. When The Shape of Water played at TIFF, the audience was floored, as it hit on an emotional level - yet, like best pic Argo (which had substantial modifications from an original story) suspended disbelief is required. Many critics of film see it this way:
      There is an appreciation for the way it is a film about love, but also is an ode to old time cinema in style, content and even technique. As one example, the "underwater" scenes were NOT underwater.
      In addition to it being what Del Toro calls a "fairytale for troubled times," he also notes how this simple story also has a universal message of love over rage (ironic, in light of its top competition currently being Three Billboards).
      More specifically, he chose 1962 because this is the time in which America started defining its myth of greatness. This is the last year of this idealistic fairytale time in concept, as shortly thereafter Kennedy is shot and Vietnam escalates. But it’s an illusion…if you are a member of certain societal segments 1962 is really hard. The film does not just speak of tolerance and solidarity, but it gives voice, literally, to voiceless characters. A group of invisible people rescue the ultimate outsider. They find the beautiful, the divine and also love in “the other.” Not your cup of tea (at least on first watch), but just some food for thought as to why so many love it. I've seen many films this year, and have placed it behind only Blade Runner 2049.
      As for the numerous nominations, I did predict these based on merit of individual components: Desplat's score, the rather stunning cinematography and production design on a dime budget, some pretty remarkable performances (and it is noteworthy that Shannon's PURPOSEFULLY 2-dimensional character did not get a nom, as he did in the brilliant Nocturnal Animals from last year), of course GDT as diirector for pulling the whole thing together.

    You lost me at three minutes with the, "he deserved that snub." He was arguably the second best performance of the year. He deserved a nomination, even if you are not his biggest fan. This was a competition for an actor's best acting performance, not who has the least amount of controversy around them. Give credit where credit is due, even to the unlikeable people. Your views on an individual do not affect their ability to act. Have an objective view for once, Academy!

    What exactly is so amazing about being able to communicate emotion without words? This is how deaf people experience the complexity of emotions in their everyday lives. As humans we all experience and express emotion beyond speech. In the performing arts, dancers convey speechless emotion all the time. In film, past the silent movie era, we've had 2 actors win in a leading role who did not utter a single word in their films: Jean Dujardin for The Artist (2012 Oscars) and Holly Hunter for The Piano (1994 Oscars).
    I believe Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water gave an amazing performance, but not because of her lack of words. To quote Sally's character Elisa: "When he looks at me, he does not know - how - I am incomplete. He sees me... as I am".

    I've never forgotten that Gregory Peck won the Best Actor Oscar for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. It was an outstanding performance and it was Time for him to win. But I've never forgotten who else was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar that year--Peter O'Toole for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. This was a brilliant performance, in my view the best by an actor that year, and at least the movie received the Best Picture Oscar. Years later, though, when O'Toole received an honorary Oscar for his body of work, the theme music played for his appearance on stage was the title theme from LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Now, as for Gary Oldman, it's Time for him to win, but that's not why he should. He should win because his performance is brilliant, in my view the best by an actor this year.

    The Last Jedi deserved a Best Picture nomination, because it's about the following . .
    1) Absence attacking itself, so that it can give itself a location
    2) God dying outside of their body, so that magic can be shared inside reality
    3) Safety destroying danger, so that safety can be exposed as the true source of danger
    4) Safety protecting magic, despite magic being the ability to protect
    5) Nothing outside the universe having the ability to see
    6) Violence wanting to meet itself, so that the opposite of violence can meet the original disconnection of reality

    Meryl Streep is given pictures over other equally talented actresses so she has more than a better chance to be nominated. And she is constantly campaigning for more Oscars. You can count on her using every trick in the book around Oscar time, especially. This year, she knocked out Judi Dench for the 5th slot. The more research you do, you'll find out more of what the Oscars are. And to think some actors would practically sell their souls for this hardware. Many great actors have never even been nominated for many reasons! Think of one? I can think of many,! Just one: Robert Walker, in "Strangers on a Train".

    Where was Michelle William's role for All the Money??!! But Chris Plummer got a nod and he just threw out a performance? It felt like it was a nom out of respect. Idk if Francis will get it however since they will be factoring in "Is this the role that she deserves a second oscar for" since she won for Fargo. Sally Hawkins I believe has the highest chances of being the long shot winner if they go that route this year based off of what I've seen how Shape of Water is being positioned this year but Margot Robbie is a longshot also since they may do a LeoD and wait/expect for her to turn in more oscar nom performances so they wont give it to her yet but she gave the most demanding well rounded and gritty-one that may be hard for her to even top unless its a repeat of the same personality type so it actually makes sense to give it to her since she was the best actress-esp as a reflection of her career. But I'm already wrong bc I thought Michelle Williams would get both nominated and probably win. She had a great accent and was incredibly engaging but she didnt even get a nom. I didnt think Chastain would get nominated for Mollys Game tho cos much like Miss Sloan it wasn't an Oscar film. Tom Hanks did a great job many wont recognize because they dont know who Ben Braddock of the Washington Post is, whom Hanks fully conjured and embodied.. Im not a huge Hanks fan and usually can only see himself in his roles but I loved him in The Post and from a technical perspective totally guarantee him a nomination so totally surprised..
